Mermaids.
Those were creatures thought not to exist, but when the world changes and bioengineering becomes something easy to understand mermaids could become real.
The capitol was a different kind of place to live, people could change their appearance to look more animal like. Normal hair colors were rare, and fancy parties were the regular.
The old world was long gone, but some things stayed with the new generations. Aquariums were one thing, but they grew more interesting when mermaids were introduced.
People willingly gave up their lives in the capitol to live a simple life surrounded by fish.
Shimmering tails of beautiful colors, entertainment was their life now. They were able to live both on land and in water, children adored them, and they could always tell when a new victor was shown the aquarium because their eyes lit up just as a child’s did.
The districts didn’t get anything like this, four was the only one that really had fish, and they didn’t do anything like this. Living in the capitol was like no other and becoming a mermaid for entertainment and enjoyment was just one life choice you could make if you were lucky enough to be born rich.
