True Colors

Summary:

Kyouko has always liked her best friend, Mystia. Ever since the duo formed their band, they grew very close to each other. However, in Kyouko’s heart, she wants to be even closer to her…

Work Text:

It was after another one of their concerts. Kyouko had an amazing time performing with Mystia. On stage, she could really show her true self: A loud and rambunctious echo spirit. And even though Mystia could never match her volume, for some reason, they harmonized, and they did it well.

It was Mystia who decided that they should make a band. They both had a love for singing after all. And Kyouko dedicated herself to the band with head held high. They had quite a few concerts a year, and people loved them. However, she knew that someone loved Mystia more than her fans…

It was Kyouko herself.

Every time she heard the night sparrow sing a song with the word “love” in it, her heart skipped a beat. She didn’t even know how she maintained her composure after that. She was really in love with her…but what should she do?

She was walking through the human village one day, actually the day before another concert, when she was stopped by a fellow fan. Kyouko could swear she had seen this person before. The person beckoned for them to over, to which she did.

The fan shifted their glasses and smiled. “For starters, my name is Sumireko…” The human from the outside world nodded. “And I know a secret of yours…”

“Oh yeah?” Kyouko looked at her with a hint of suspicion. “What do you know, hm?”

Sumireko had a smug grin on her face. “Something tells me…you’re in love.”

Kyouko couldn’t hide it. Her face turned a bright red and her ears drooped. “M…maybe I am…b-but what can you do about it?”

“I have an idea.” Sumireko pulled out her flip phone. She fiddled through it for a second and then looked back at the Yamabiko. “Take a listen to this.” She held up the phone to Kyouko’s ear and played a song.

Kyouko was amazed by this person's voice. How on earth did Sumireko do this? That would be a mystery for another time.

“The song is called ‘True colors.’ I thought it would be fitting for the situation you’re in.” The Outside World Human smiled.

Kyouko smiled back. The song ended and she was almost in tears. “It’s…beautiful…”

“It is indeed. You should sing it!” Sumireko grinned.

“WHAT!?” Kyouko screamed out, and an echo blew through the area, blowing almost all the leaves of a nearby tree. She instantly covered her mouth, her face turning red once more.

It was a miracle Sumireko wasn’t blown away. She giggled. “I have a feeling that Misty will love it. Just you wait.”

Kyouko wasn’t confident in herself, but she tried her best.

And now…it was the night of the concert. The echo spirit’s heart was going a million miles an hour. She was sweating a lot as well. She couldn’t comprehend how nervous she was. She couldn’t believe she was actually going through with this.

Mystia noticed the nervous Kyouko and floated over to her. “Hey…” She spoke softly. “You’re shaking like a leaf…are you ok?”

The Echo Spirit yipped and all her senses came back to her. “Y-yes! I’m ok…”

The Night Sparrow looked at her in concern. “I can see you’re nervous, y’know…” She sat down next to her. Misty was already dressed in her concert attire. “Talk to me.”

Kyouko shifted her position. “It’s tonight’s concert…I-I don’t know why I’m so scared…” She lied. She knew dead well why she was so nervous.

Misty hugged her friend from behind. Kyouko could feel her warmth and her soft heartbeat. “It’s gonna be ok…we’re gonna have fun tonight! I promise you, ok?” She gave her best friend a soft and quick kiss on the cheek. The echo spirit blushed harder than she ever had in her life. She was used to Misty’s embrace and even her kisses on her cheeks…but for some reason, tonight, this very night, it made Kyouko very embarrassed.

The duo walked onto the stage, side by side. They always got a little nervous before a concert, that’s just how it was, but Kyouko was more nervous than ever. They both took a breath, and Misty took her mike and smiled at the crowd.

“Hello everyone!” Mystia spoke through the microphone. The crowd cheered as the two entered the stage wearing their rock uniforms. “Are you ready to jam out!?”

The crowd roared.

Kyouko took her mike and took a big breath. She was ready now. “LET’S. GET. WILD!” Kyouko yelled through it as the concert started.

The duo played quite a few songs that night. The crowd went wild, cheering and singing along to their songs. It was quite the display. Think of a typical outside world rock concert, only its done all by Misty and Kyouko. It was something special.

When it was over, the crowd cheered, and some even threw flowers onto the stage.

“Thank you! Thank you all for coming!” Mystia bowed.

“WAIT!” Kyouko yelled out, and the crowd went quiet. She actually saw Sumireko within the crowd. She looked at her, and Sumireko nodded. Kyouko smiled back.

“Actually…I would like to play a song…” Kyouko blushed and smiled. “This song goes to out to a person who I love with all my heart…This person has been with me for as long as I know…they’re kind and sweet and other words that I don’t exactly understand…”

Kyouko quickly tuned her guitar. And then…she started to sing.
“You with the sad eyes… Don't be discouraged…Oh, I realize It's hard to take courage in a world full of people… You can lose sight of it all… and the darkness inside you can make you feel so small…”

“But I see your true colors shining through… I see your true colors And that's why I love you…!”

Right as she said that verse, she looked at Misty, and a floodlight shone down on her. Only then Misty realized what was happening. She gasped and covered her mouth. Was she really being confessed to? She couldn’t believe this was happening!
“So don't be afraid… to let them show… your true colors. True colors are beautiful… Like a rainbow…!”

Kyouko’s voice was softer than anyone imagined it could go. I mean, she wasn’t so soft that no one could hear her, it’s just that her tone of voice was very fitting for the situation.

Soon the song ended. The crowd held their applause. It seemed like the crowd was waiting for that question…that one question that Kyouko thought about every day.

“Misty…”

“Yes. I will, Kyouko, I will!” Misty hugged her new girlfriend and spun her around. She kissed her on the lips during that spin, and the crowd cheered louder than they ever had before.

Misty’s lips tasted like lamprey. Not surprising as she ran a lamprey stand. However, Kyouko liked the taste. She was filled with joy and happiness. She had done it! She actually confessed to her, AND she accepted.

The two broke apart, looked at each other and smiled. They both looked towards the crowd and bowed as they usually did at the end. The crowd continued to cheer.

“Thank you,” Kyouko mouthed to Sumireko in the crowd, who winked back, indicating that Kyouko was welcome.

This was the best day of both of their lives, and one they wouldn’t forget, even if they were to die and get sent to the Netherworld.

(As you can tell, I’m a sucker for 80’s music. This ship is also one of my personal favorites. Combine those two and bam! Here you go. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed it!)
