never been in love (and it's all good)

Work Text:

There’s not a fibre in Nancy’s body that will ever believe she’s the odd one out. What’s more, if the whole world would agree on one thing and Nancy wouldn’t, the world would be the weird ones. She has her ideas and she stands by them, no matter what. She thought Edith and Peg were the same, but ever since they got boyfriends, they’ve changed.

There’s no more rating kisses between the three of them, their dreams of going to fashion school together seem to have evaporated and the three of them haven’t been alone together ever since Roy and Bill entered the picture. Ever since, it’s as if Nancy never even existed to them.

Neither of them listen anymore when she talks about fashion with a fiery passion, just like all three of them used to together. Her newest pieces go unnoticed, just like her absence at lunch and on the rides to school. She’s not even sure Edith and Peg have noticed she’s one of the four rebel girls in bright pink jackets.

It’s weird how replaceable she is to them. They’ve been friends since first grade and used to do everything together, and now they’ve ditched her because “they’ve matured”? It makes absolutely no sense. How is she any different from Roy and Bill? It’s love either way. Aside from the fact they kiss every now and then, there really isn’t any difference, so why are they more important all of a sudden?

There’s one thing Edith, Peg, Roy and Bill have made clear to her for the first time though: all this time, when people talked about being in love and having crushes, they weren’t joking. For years Nancy thought everyone pretended to have crushes just to be interesting, to have something to talk about, so she’d pick a boy to have a crush on and giggle with her friends whenever he passed by or looked at her. It was fun. But all this time, for Edith and Peg, it was real?

Maybe, just this one time, she is the odd one out.
