Chapter Text
Prologue
Like my father had said a long time ago, “Azula was born lucky, Zuko was lucky to be born, and Kene was born as Luck.”
And I believed that.
My father had seen something in me. He urged me to grow and muster up a flame before I could even walk. He pushed and pushed and just as his hopes grew, they deflated. After my 4th birthday, however, that's when it happened. The first victim of my gods-given abilities.
“HELP!! Help me!” Her screams rattled the halls and all I had to do was watch on the floor, my eyes scanning her for what she could possibly be screaming at.
I heard more heels clicking as maids burst into my nursery and started to look around wildly, “Eda, what is it?! What’s the matter??” They asked frantically, to which my nanny turned around to show the back of her dress. It was slowly burning away with no source or evidence as to why. The cinders covered the floor as the burns only made their way up. The maids were quick to search for a way to distinguish the heat, grabbing a cup and filling it with water. The water hit the dress and there was a sizzle, then smoke. It was calm for a few beats before the screams began again. The flames seem to have moved to the floor beneath the nanny’s feet following the water, except there was nothing there. The carpet was clearly on fire, the material burning away as it slowly inched forward and consumed whatever it could reach, but no one could see it. After a few more panic attacks and a rug being cut and tossed out a window, it was silent again.
Afterward, I was taken to my father. That’s how they discovered that I was different.
That I was special.
