this is why you should never meet your idols

Summary:

"Never meet your idols." they say. Of course Blair turns a blind eye.

Notes:

Blair is human Blurr
Sal is human Salvage
Speedstorm is just an OC of mine.

Work Text:

Fourteen-year-old Blair loves racing. It was something he knew he was born to do. His parents were both racers, and had always encouraged him to become a racer too. When Blair had gotten his driver’s license, the first thing he did was go and purchase a race car, and he practiced day and night on an abandoned race track he found with his friend, Sal.

Sal was fifteen years old, and he and Blair were two different people. Blair, obviously, loves racing and being the fastest. Sal likes arts and crafts, and likes to take things slow. Despite this, they managed to become the best of friends. They were more like brothers than anything else. Whenever Blair was having second thoughts on competing in a race, Sal would encourage him to do it. The same thing happened when Sal had a sculpting contest a few months back, and obviously Sal won.

But since they were young, Blair had been obsessed with this one racer, who calls himself Speedstorm. Speedstorm had been unbeatable since before Blair had been born, and Blair could remember that ever since he was young, he adored Speedstorm and wanted to be just like him.

Of course, after all these years, Blair didn't know how much longer he could wait for his chance to compete in a race against Speedstorm, so he made up his mind. He'd never race anyone else again until he raced Speedstorm. When Blair heard of Speedstorm's upcoming racing at one of their local racetracks, he raced, no pun intended, to the track. The track was one he frequently went to, and the hosts there recognized him and let him attend without a doubt in mind. As he entered through a side door into the stadium, he couldn't believe that he finally got to meet Speedstorm, and actually get to race against him. Even after all these years. But he knew this was his chance.

Obviously, Blair was the youngest contestant at fourteen years old, but that didn't stop him from trying to be the best. He was racing against Speedstorm for God's sake! He had to impress him!

"Hey, good luck out there." A voice said behind him as he was wiping down his helmet. Blair turned to see Sal, "Thanks. You'll be watching me, right?"

Sal chuckled, "Wouldn't miss it for the world."

They hugged, and Blurr put on his helmet. Wasn't anything special; just purple with white stripes. His racing uniform was similar, but some green accents were added. His car had the same purple, green, and white color scheme. He opened the door and got in, starting the engine. Immediately, the steering wheel started blinking green, a little something he added after he got the car.

He took his place near the starting line, just a few feet away from Speedstorm. Blair looked out the window and expected to see the kind face of Speedstorm like he had seen on TV, but...

Something was wrong.

Speedstorm looked... angry. Like he wanted to strangle someone and watch them pass. Blair shivered just thinking about it, and faced forward. The stop light blinks red, then yellow, then green, and they were
off.

As soon as Blair hit the gas pedal, an invisible wall of pressure hit him, making his back slam into the chair. He watched as the speedometer raised rapidly.

Before Blair knew it, he was racing at 130 miles per hour, just barely reaching Speedstorm. There were times when Blair would overtake Speedstorm, but was quickly pushed back into second place. When it was
the last lap, Blair and Speedstorm were racing next to each other, both desperately pushing the limits to earn first place. The crowd roared wildly as Blair somehow overtook Speedstorm, and Blair had won the
race.

Once Blair had crossed the white and black checkered line, he swerved the car and did a few doughnuts before pressing the brakes. The car screeched and whined but eventually stopped. Blair got out as Sal
ran towards him, enveloping him in a bone-crushing hug.

"You did it! You actually freaking did it!"

Blair wheezed, "Sal," he croaked out, "can't... breathe!"

"Oops, sorry B."

Sal released him just as Speedstorm was stomping over to the other racer.

"You've got some nerve!" Speedstorm yelled, poking a finger at his chest. "How dare you? Beat me in a race? Prepare to face the consequences!"

Blair gasped and raised his arms to cover his face as Speedstorm pounced on him, only to be grabbed by some security guards. They held him back as Speedstorm kicked and thrashed, and their retreating
figures exited the stadium.

Blair sighed in relief, and was tapped on the shoulder. He turned around to see the host holding a trophy that said "1ST PLACE"

"This belongs to you, Blair. Congratulations."

Blair's eyes widened in disbelief as he was handed the trophy, and Sal lifted Blair up so he sat on his shoulders. Blair laughed and held the trophy up, making the crowd cheer louder than ever.

Yeah, his idol wasn't the best. And yeah, his idol did try to attack him. But, that didn't matter now. Sal always said to forget the past and focus on the present, even if the past was two minutes ago.
