chromatic dance

Summary:

Sampling colors for her new designs was, perhaps, her favorite part.

Work Text:

As red as rubies, as blue as sapphire; a sparkling royal violet pooled on the crisp white design-paper spread across the floor.

An emerald twirled in the air, catching the light - perhaps this lovely shade of green? Oh, no no; the violet was too bold, and the green looked so washed-out!

Glimmering in the sun's rays, a topaz - violet and yellow were complementary, surely that would work well? Hmm... it did seem lovely, but now didn't the purple look too red?

A wave of her hoof, a dip of her horn.

Like an orchestra at the beck and call of the conductor, the jewels that hung in the air under her magic spun and swayed, catching the sunlight and spilling their tint onto all her small canvases. Yes, yes; that one over there, and these colors over to this design. Move that peridot - its shade would suit that particular dress much better than the one it was currently with. Oh, and the garnet looked so lovely with the amethyst! She almost wanted to create a whole new style just to show off that color pair!

Colored pencils and markers splashed their hues across her fashion templates as she flicked her horn this way and that, doing all that she could to match the jeweltones as near as possible. Mustn't lose these beautiful combinations!

"Well," Rarity chirped, tone light and airy, "I think that will be enough for now." With a cheery humming, she stacked the gemstones neatly within a well-kept treasure box, set upon a high shelf and tucked against one of the walls. Everything in its order, everything in its place.

Tomorrow was another day.

Fluff piece written to be posted alongside an illustration that was never finished. Originally done in 2011, no edits.
