Work Text:
Drix stares into the smallest glimpse of space that he can see from this angle of the eardrum, stargazing next to Ozzy who watches with lazy eyes, scratching his chest mindlessly, a few blinks away from falling asleep.
The pill starts to ramble, he mumbles no louder than the beat of the heart, about how large space is, and a couple of rumors he's heard about humans going to the moon to find life. This piques the cell’s interest, he starts his own tangent through half awake murmuring.
“Ya ever think about how out there, it’s all bigger than us… people, organisms made up of a bunch of other guys, and even then…. Even so.”
He’s grinning, as if trying to not laugh at a joke he hasn’t told yet. Not that there’s really a punchline in any of this, but Jones smiles anyway.
“… They still feel so small. They still... wonder about everything bigger than them.”
Ozzy snickers, a light laugh that’s quick to miss.
“Imagine how they’d feel being in our shoes for a day, huh.”
“That was very…”
Drix pauses in the trail of his thoughts, dumbfounded. He comes to a realization that things would be different from this point on. How so? Well, instead of feeling a light hug in his heart when he sees Ozzy smile, or when he sees him laugh, it's all been replaced with a turmoil of… necessity. Of yearning, of wanting to be. Drix can't put his finger on it yet, but he's sure he knows what it is – he's just terrified of facing such an idea.
Frightened, the pill lets go of a breath that he didn’t realize he was holding.
“Insightful.”
Jones quirks a brow at Drix’s long pause and fearful face, and he stores that image into his memory for further reflection. He considers asking about it now, of course why wouldn't he, but this time around, instead of spitting words out his mouth, he holds them in… and lets them marinate for a bit. He’ll figure out what to say, eventually, but now the stars are above him and his partner is beside him, things are calm and he appreciates the sentiment.
Before Ozzy can even form words to say, or some back-hand light-hearted comment to throw, Drix continues on.
“... I never realized that.”
He says this to himself, but Ozzy doesn't quite catch the memo.
“Realize what?”
It’s apparent that he's talking out loud, so Drix clears his throat.
“Er… many things… that I’m still figuring out.”
Jones scans him for a second before angling his head back towards the sky.
“Aight. But, let me know when you figure it out, cool?”
“I…“ He pauses. He hesitates. He sighs and he agrees to a shaky promise.
“…Cool.”
