End Racism in the OTW: Mark the Day

Summary:

Huaisang and Jiang Cheng attend a concert.

Notes:

Author’s Note: In 2020-2021, I was subjected to a spate of transphobic harassment on AO3, and it was horrible. It poisoned fandom, which had become my respite and refuge and nearly drove me out entirely. And what I experienced was a mere drop in the ocean compared to what fans of color experience every day here on AO3 and social media. It must end, and the OTW must use its power to enact changes that empower us all to stamp out racism in fan spaces. This Call to Action outlines actionable, measurable steps the OTW can do to help us all improve the fan spaces we love and ensure that they are welcoming to all fans. Please take a moment to let OTW know that you support these anti-racist measures.

Work Text:

“I told you, right, that when I was ten, my mom promised that if IN2IT ever came to town, she would take me to their concert? And she thought they would never come? But they did? And she took me? And I screamed for two hours straight? And it was the best night of my life?”

Jiang Cheng puts his hand up just as Huaisang is about to whack him in the face with the light stick he purchased last month and personalized with intricately drawn gold and pink flowers. He can’t help but match Huaisang’s jubilant grin.

“You have,” he says as Huaisang bounces on his toes beside him. “Many, many times.”

“It was the best night of my whole life, A-Cheng. But I think this might come in second.” He grabs Jiang Cheng’s hand with his free hand. “No offense to all the amazing things we’ve done together, but, like, this is going to be amazing.”

“We’re doing this together,” Jiang Cheng points out.

“Oh yeah,” Huaisang says brightly, “we are!” He tugs Jiang Cheng’s hand until he bends down so Huaisang can kiss his cheek. “Did I tell you thank you for this? For the tickets, and the weeks and weeks of nothing playlists, every B-side and mini album and Japan-only release?”

“You did,” Jiang Cheng says, “many, many times. It -- well, I can’t say it has always been my pleasure.”

Huiasang grins at him, and Jiang Cheng kisses him.

“The music hasn’t always been my pleasure,” Jiang Cheng goes on, “but it is absolutely my pleasure to be able to be here with you. Oh, you probably owe Wen Qing a kidney for actually getting the tickets for us.”

Huaisang moves in front of Jiang Cheng. He wraps Jiang Cheng’s arms around his waist and leans back against his chest.

“Totally worth it,” he says with a contented sigh.

The lights go down. The screaming of the crowd goes up, and it’s the last thing Jiang Cheng hears Huaisang say for the next three hours.

Totally worth it.

Notes:

DoMAYstic Day 17: Marked date on the calendar. Really short today. This is based in part on the time my mom took me to see New Kids on the Block when I was ten. Huaisang’s current band is fictional, but I’m imagining someone like BlackPink. Someone thoroughly popular and fun.
