“So…”
Becky smiles and buckles her seatbelt. “So?” She is perfectly happy to play dumb. It’s her blonde era, after all. The SUV begins to move and she jolts forward slightly with the momentum.
The woman sitting next to her in the backseat gives her a look. “What was that about?”
“What was what about?” She can see that the coyness is getting on the older woman’s nerves, much to her amusement. It’s a game of chicken, and she’s not going to lose. She never loses. Sometimes, she lets Freen win.
Right on cue, Freen huffs lightly and rolls her eyes. She knocks the brim of Becky’s cap down over her eyes lightly. They’ve both changed out of their fancy ball gowns with the help of the wardrobe persons in the fitting rooms. Now, they are back in their casual clothes, still riding high on the numerous wins they’ve received.
It’s been a busy, successful night for their show and for them. Series of the Year, Popular Female Teenage Award, Rising Female of the Year, and Couple of the Year, all in one night. They’ve heard the words “Congratulations!” and “Well done!” so many times tonight. If she hears one more person say those words to her, she’s going to melt into a puddle of tears.
Becky is still astounded that she won Rising Female Artist. It makes all those sleepless nights and stressful days of balancing school and work so, so worth it. Of course, she owes it all to Freen. A steady friend that supported her through it all, she made the end product of GAP the series come into fruition. Without each other, the show should not have been such a success. So while she might be happy with the award she personally won, she is positively ecstatic that she and Freen won Couple of the Year.
“You know what I’m talking about, Beck.”
“No, I’m afraid I don’t…” Becky has to bite her lip to keep from snickering and falling apart. She does know what Freen is talking about, but she wants her to say it. So she continues to beat around the bush. Becky prides herself in being stubborn as hell. She’s very capable of digging her heels in and forcing the other person’s hand. Sure, it might be a little immature, but it’s fun .
Freen looks down at the matching briefcases that hold their matching awards. “Your speech when we accepted the couple award. Why did you say that?”
She shrugs and snakes her arm around her best friend’s waist from the back. “Because it’s true. And I want everyone to know how much you mean to me. We’re a team.”
This brings a smile to Freen’s tired face. “The best.”
She knows it’s true. Freen is the talker of the pair, fielding interview questions when Becky feels uncomfortable or her social battery is empty. Becky is the sturdy one, keeping Freen’s anxiety at bay and deflecting potential triggers. Together, they navigate the minefield that is the entertainment industry. C ontrary to Freen’s belief, Becky needs Freen just as much as she needs her. This equivalency and balancing is what makes them work.
“We did it, baby.” This time, her ending statement is more muted in volume. Her introverted self is tuckered out from all the socializing she’s had to do tonight.
Becky hears a chuckle rumble in the depths of Freen’s chest. She feels a pair of strong, warm arms wrap around her, pulling her ever closer to her best friend. Her eyes fall closed as she feels a pair of soft lips ghost her hairline.
“Yeah, we did.”

“So, where are you putting your awards?”
She shrugs. “The bathroom? I want to look at it while I shit and shower and stuff.”
“Becky! No!”
