A Reporter's Instincts

Summary:

Aya is a reporter for the local newspaper, Bumbaru Newspaper. One day, one of her papers gets hijacked, telling lies about Aya…except one lie is actually true.

Work Text:

It was a regular spring morning. Aya awoke and got dressed quickly. It was time to hand out her newspaper to her loyal subscribers! These days were exciting for her. The smiles on peoples faces never ceased to make her smile as well. She grabbed her stack of newspapers, patted her Momiji and Aya fumos, and left her home at the speed of sound.

Being the fastest in Gensokyo was hard work, and Aya was no different. She was thankful that she sent these out weekly and not every day, otherwise she’d be exhausted. She raced across the skies, being at the perfect distance from the ground to drop newspapers without them getting damaged. She could hear the people thank her as she left with a smile.

For some reason she had an uneasy feeling after she left the human village that day. She shrugged it off and kept moving. Her next destination was the Forest of Magic, which she whizzed through in about 3 minutes. That just shows how fast she was.

After the Myouren Temple, Eientei, and The Maloseum, The Crow Tengu made her route back through the human village, where she heard a lot of commotion. It was regarding her newspaper. Her heart dropped. What did they see? Did she do something wrong? She decided to fly down to one of her customers, which happened to be none other than the Japanese Goblin herself, Suika.

She burped. Obviously she was drunk, but that didn’t mean her mind wasn’t straight. She looked unhappy. “You.” She looked at her. “Over here.”

Aya gulped. Suika could crush Aya in one chokehold. “Y-yes?” She stammered.

Suika’s expression changed to a more playful one. She started to laugh. What was this about? “I know all this isn’t true, since I know ya, and know ya well, but other people will think it is!” The Japanese Goblin shoved the newspaper in her face. Aya looked at her. She never pre-read her newspaper before heading out. She always made sure the doors were locked at night, and she would be able to hear someone if they were through her windows, that way she knew no one could tamper with her papers. But this time, someone managed to get a hold of them.

What did the paper say about her? Some of it was tame, like how Aya has multiple Momiji fumos and how sometimes she could be old-fashioned and use a pen and quill, but as she read, she found more disturbing allegations. One said that she was a prostitute and would sell herself for more subscribers, how she spied on people bathing, but one really stuck out to her. This one made her blush hard.

It said that she was in love with her best friend, Momiji.

How the hell did this person know that? How did she know her feelings toward her? Aya always had a crush on Momiji, the white wolf tengu. She always treated her the best she could. She did flirt with her from time to time, but that was in her nature, she sometimes flirted with people accidentally. But Momiji was the one who held her heart, and she would do anything to protect her and keep her safe.

“You ok there?” Suika asked, knocking Aya out of her daze.

Aya snapped back into reality and rubbed her eyes. “Am I ok? NO!” Aya yelled, Suika wasn’t fazed, but was shocked. “Look at what this person said about me! I’m going to kick their ass!” Aya was a mixture of emotions at the moment.

But one thing stuck out in her head. Did Momiji read the paper yet?

The people on the Youkai Mountain read the Bumbaru Newspaper before anyone else, and one of the people that lived on the mountain happened to be none other than Momiji.

“So…what’cha gonna do ‘bout it?” Suika wobbled a little bit. “I hope that Momiji doesn’t reali-”

Suika didn’t have a chance to finish before Aya took off faster than she ever had in her life. She could NOT have Momiji read that paper. Aya couldn’t let out her feelings just yet. She was too nervous.

A short time later, and she made it to the base. Some Youkai were giggling at the newspaper she dropped, which made her even more hopeless. No matter, she had to find Momiji immediately. She flew her tired body up the mountain. Wheezing by trees made her arrive at one of the waterfalls, where she saw Hatate, her friend and rival. Maybe she knew where Momiji was?

“Hatate!” The Crow Tengu yelled out, to which Hatate turned back.

“Huh?” She looked at Aya, puzzled.

“Have you seen Momiji? Do you know where she is?” Aya looked very nervous.

“Actually, yes I have.” Hatate pointed close to the summit. “I think I saw her go up th-”

“Thanks! I owe you one!” Aya interrupted and took off again.

Hatate just stood there. “Well, that was weird.” She shrugged and looked back at her flip phone.

Aya sped to near the top of the summit. She was very tired by this point, but she refused to give up. She couldn’t let Momiji read that newspaper. It would ruin not only her reputation, but her relationship with Momiji.

She made it to close to the top. And there was the White Wolf Tengu. Her arms were crossed and she had a stern expression on her face. Maybe she was keeping watch?

Nope! She looked right at Aya. Aya sweatdropped. “Shit,” She muttered to herself. There was no way she didn’t know.

“Aya.” Momiji looked annoyed.

“Y…yes?” Aya stammered as she flew down.

Momiji sighed. “Why would you say all that about yourself?”

Wait…what? This was not the answer she expected from Momiji. She thought she was going to instantly tell her about that rumor…but she didn’t. Alright…let’s see where this goes.

“I know you sometimes think negatively, but to actually put it down on paper and publish it…that worries me.” Momiji looked at The Crow Tengu, her ears drooped.

Aya blushed a little bit. She had to think of something. She took a breath. “I really don’t know why I put all of that down…even though none of it’s true, I just was in a bad mindset at that time. I’m sorry if I worried you.” Her head hung low.

“Are you sure that ALL of it isn’t true?” Momiji looked at her in anticipation.

They just stood for about 30 seconds, looking at each other. Aya knew what she felt, but was The White Wolf Tengu in favor? Did she feel the same way? Aya was really nervous, and tapped her foot.

“Well?” Momiji waited for an answer.

“Well, what?” Aya was going to play hard to get, it seemed.

“You know what I’m referring to.”

“I don’t.”

“Um…yeah, you do. Wipe that grin off!” Momiji scolded as Aya let out a cheeky grin.

“Ok…yes, I do know what you're talking about.” Aya sighed. “And…”

“Yeah?” Momiji’s ear rose and her tail started to wag.

“Alright, I do!” Aya hid her mouth behind a maple leaf she carried in embarrassment. “And to be honest…I’ve felt this way for a while now…I can’t stop thinking about you…why do you think I have so many fumos?”

“So you can mastur-”

“NO!” Aya’s face became beet red. “Absolutely not! Why would I do such a lewd act?”

The White Wolf Tengu crossed her arms and giggled, her tail still wagging. “Says the person who looks under skirts.” Now it was her turn to slyfully grin.

“Th-that’s not true!” Aya looked away. “Ayayaya…”

Momiji stepped closer, and Aya backed herself against a tree. She was trapped. What was Momiji gonna do? Did Momiji actually…like her too?

“Wh…what are you…”

Aya was quieted by Momiji’s finger on her lips. “Shh…” Momiji looked at Aya, and Aya could swear she saw hearts in her eyes. Her tail wagged rapidly. “I know what you’re thinking. And…yes, I do like you too.” Bam! Faster than Aya could ever be, Momiji swiftly kissed her. Aya was shocked at first, but she melted. She closed her eyes and kissed her back. Momiji’s lips tasted like meat, tender and juicy.

When they broke apart, Momiji looked at Aya, her arms wrapped around her neck.

“So…how was that?” Momiji whispered.

Aya, for once, was at a loss for words. She couldn’t believe it all happened so quickly. She tapped her foot again. “Ayayayayayaya…” She muttered to herself.

Momiji giggled. “I’ve never seen you so…quiet, before. It’s cute.”

“Mmmm…” Aya covered her face in embarrassment. She was the one full of energy and life, so why was she so embarrassed and shy? Either way…it felt good to finally get that feeling off of her chest. “Momiji…”

“Hm?” The White Wolf Tengu looked at her.

“We’re gonna have a lot of fun together…~” Aya grinned and kissed her cheek.

What was Aya planning for her? Momiji wondered. She blushed a little and smiled back.

And the person that hijacked her newspaper? They were never found, and they never did it again.
