Work Text:

How long had it been since he saw daylight?

Far too long, that was for sure.

The pale sunlight touched his skin gracefully and gently. He was almost blinded by how bright it was compared to the clouds he was used to.

Mono sat upright, using his hand to shield himself from the sun. He felt around. Right. The flashlight had broken. Why would he need it now anyways?

He did feel something, though.

A hand.

They did it.

Realization seeped in as Mono recalled what exactly happened. They were fleeing that cursed, warped, monstrous tower, and they made it. A smile erupted onto his face and he dropped his hand from his eyes. He took a moment to still get accustomed to the light, and that was when he saw her.

In all her glory, Six was lying on the ground right next to him, unconscious. Her raincoat was a bit dirty, but that was fine. She wouldn’t care anyway. He gently shook her. She stirred, but didn’t wake up. He shook her a little harder and she groaned, but woke.

“Hey!” he whispered, the word laced with excitement. She looked up, confused, but realization hit her hard.

“Oi!” she exclaimed, a smile similar to his growing on her face.

The two kids shared a look. Six threw her arms over Mono, giggling uncontrollably. It was the first time either of them had displayed any sort of compassion for the other. Mono was very welcoming of it and leaned into it, the sun shining directly overhead them. It was then that they realized they were on a hill. A green, grassy hill, with all sorts of flowers of differing shapes and sizes and colors, and everything was perfect.

Everything was perfect.

Mono was the first to release from the hug - mainly because he couldn't breathe in Six's arms - and took a moment to look around. He got to his feet, extending an arm for Six to help her up, and admired the scenery. It was the first time he felt safe enough to take an actual look at the Forest. It was beautiful in the sunlight. Trees much taller than the two of them touched the skies, and god, were the skies the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. Six saw where he was looking and her mouth opened, as if to say a word, but no words could describe the pure joy and happiness the both of them felt in that moment.

For the first time in their lives, they had no idea what to do.

Year after year it was always the same ordeal of running, running, running from things. But now it seemed like there was nothing to run from. Something in their guts told them that it was all going to be okay. They didn't need to run anymore.

Mono and Six shared a look. Mono squeezed Six's hand and gave her a smile. She returned it.

They took one last look at the sky before Mono led the way into the forest.

They were off to find a home.
