“sophie’s on my team this time,” biana said after keefe suggested a game of base quest, grabbing sophie’s arm and pulling the blonde towards her. as she did, sophie’s arm felt like it was on fire, and her face immediately burned. she hoped biana hadn’t noticed the way her face colored, she had embarassed herself enough in front of this family.
it meant nothing, she thought. she was just flushed and her palms were sweaty because of the beating sun. the eternalia sun was always hot this time of year, and they were running around. her feelings meant nothing.
-
“that’s so unfair,” keefe complained after their match, wiping the hair stuck to his forehead. “sophie’s too good at this game.” biana snickered, throwing an arm around her teammate, “you just suck.” keefe gasped dramatically and clenched his chest like he was mortally wounded. sophie wanted to laugh, but she couldn’t take her mind off of how close biana was. her hand was resting on sophie’s shoulder, and biana’s head rested on her other shoulder. sophie’s face burned, a dorky smile plastered on her face as the group walked through one of everglen’s halls to the dining room.
when they stepped in the foyer, biana whisked the blonde away to sit next to her at the table, gripping her hand. sophie could do nothing but follow, her stomach twisting when biana squeezed her hand and didn’t let go until dinner was served. sophie stared at her plate as her tablemates chatted away. she couldn’t look up, because she knew if she did, she would be captivated by whatever biana was saying and make a fool out of herself.
so, she looked down at her mashed carnissa root and umber leaves and stayed quiet, smiling lightly.

as the months grew colder and their base quest matches grew shorter, sophie couldn’t keep blaming her clammy hands and hot face on the warm weather. every touch from biana set her face ablaze, every smile made her knees week, and every insistance that sophie would be her teammate made the telepath’s heart beat rapidly. she couldn’t say it was nothing anymore, because it was something.
she couldn’t keep it in anymore, all the feelings she had were waiting to explode out of her. so, after one dinner, when her and keefe were heading home (she insisted they walk), sophie took her chance. “keefe,” she said cautiously, “i think i have a crush on someone.” his eyebrows furrowed when he looked down at her. “okay, who ?” he asked. “its not fitz, is it ?” sophie made a face at his question, signaling no. “right then, who is it ?”
sophie’s face grew hotter as she spat out, “its biana.”
keefe’s eyebrows raised. “i did not see that coming, i’ll be honest.” sophie nodded, looking down at her feet shuffling along everglen’s massive courtyard. “she’s just so nice to me, and she always looks at me with these big eyes, and i just like her so much. she always gets so touchy, and she never feels uncomfortable around me. she doesn’t care about holding hands, or hugs, or being too close to me. and she cares,” sophie rambled, her heart clenching in her chest as she goes on. keefe listened, and when sophie was done, he put a hand on her shoulder. “then what are you waiting for ? tell her, not me, foster !”
-
as keefe’s words settled in, sophie’s mind set. like something clicked in her brain, needing something to trigger it. she nodded with a determined look on her face and before she could stop herself, sophie was sprinting back up the path. “i didn’t mean now !” keefe called behind her, but she didn’t care. if not now, when ?
when she reached the front door, she rapped on the wood and caught her breath. when della answered, she felt herself blush as she said quickly, “i need to talk to biana.” della, thankfully, didn’t question sophie and called biana from somewhere in their massive house. when biana appeared in the doorway, sophie pulled her by the hand outside and stepped away from the door, eager for some privacy.
“sophie, what’s wrong ? did something happen ?” biana asked worriedly, her tone nervous. sophie shook her head before taking biana’s hands in hers. “no, i just need to tell you something. it couldn’t wait anymore. i really like you, biana, like, love you. you’re so good to me, and you actually care about me. you’re funny, and you’re always so eager to be around me, and i love that about you. and you’re so pretty, too, but you always downplay it in my favor. you’re patient, and you listen, and not everyone does that for me. you’re not afraid to be physical with me, and i love when you hold my hand or hug me. you’re just so awesome all the time and i really, really, like you, biana. i wanted to tell you soon, but i just couldn’t wait. and, don’t think you have to like me back, i’ve been talking for too lo—!“
sophie babbled on before being cut off by biana pressing a kiss to her cheek, squeezing her hand and saying softly, “i like you, too, sophie.” the blonde felt herself smile dopily and blush at biana’s gesture. “now, go home ! i was just about to go to bed,” biana giggled, “goodnight, sophie.”
biana waved her goodnight as sophie trotted down the path, feeling a burst of energy after her confession. it was only until she made it past the everglen gates when she squealed and flapped her hands from excitement. for once, sophie didn’t wait.
