Chapter Text
Derek and Meredith were on their way to California to pick up their nephew Lucas and have him come live with him for a while till things calmed down between his parents.
“I do hope we’re doing the right thing, Luke knows us and he knows us as the fun aunt and uncle but I’m not sure how he’ll handle living with us and not going home to his parents.” Meredith said “Luke loves us, it’s a huge adjustment for all of us but we’ll show him that we love him and will take care of him.” Derek said before they got on the plane.
California.
Lucas was in his room with his backpack and a suitcase filled with clothes “Lu, honey you ready to go to the airport to meet your aunt and uncle?” Lucas’ mom asked “yeah, but why do I have to go?” Lucas asked.
“Daddy and I are going to work things out honey, mommy can feel it this time so you’re going to go stay with your aunt and uncle for a while and mommy will come pick you up when daddy and I are all better.” Mom said which Lucas didn’t believe as they always said ‘we’ll work it out.’ And it never works so now Lucas is going away to live with responsible relatives.
The airport
Lucas was waiting with his mom while Lucas had a ticket and so did his mom to take him “you be good buddy, be on your best behavior and don’t bug your aunt and uncle while they are working, just make yourself invisible if you can.” Lucas said ok while he wasn’t happy but he felt sad “I will mommy, I’ll be invisible just like I’m at home.” Lucas mumbled the last part.
Meredith and Derek got off the plane and went to find Lucas since they had a few hours before they had to fly back home so they hoped to get Lucas,fine some dinner in the airport then get Lucas anything he wanted for a snack/ entertainment on the plane for the way home.
Lucas held his mom’s hand while they waited for Meredith and Derek who was walking up as Lucas smiled but remembered his moms words to act invisible “hey buddy! Are you ready to spend time with me and auntie?” Derek asked Lucas who smiled and said ‘yes uncle Der.’ Before he hugged both Derek and Meredith who held Lucas’ hand.
“Do you need to go to the bathroom before we find dinner?” Meredith asked Lucas “he just went so he should be good, I left a note in his bag and I’ll see you when I can.” Mom said “bye mom.” Lucas said but his mom left without saying goodbye “hey sweetheart let’s go potty before dinner.” Meredith said as Derek took him to the bathrooms.
Lucas looked sad at dinner as he wasn’t himself “what’s up buddy? Tired?” Derek asked Lucas “no, mommy said something to me about how to act so I’m acting how she wants me to act.” Lucas said “what did mommy say?” Derek asked.
“To act invisible, no words, no fun and don’t disturb you and auntie while you’re working.” Lucas said “honey, we want you to enjoy yourself, so while you're with me and uncle Der, be yourself and we only ask that you be respectful of our house rules and we’ll be fine.” Meredith said as Derek looked up and said ok “I think someone needs a cuddle before dinner comes.” Derek said before he lifted Lucas into his lap and hugged him.
Back on the plane!
Lucas was in Derek’s arms while they loaded the plane “do you want a middle or window seat?” Derek asked Lucas who shrugged “give him the window seat, what kid doesn’t like to see when the plane takes off and lands.” Meredith said before Derek placed Lucas in the window seat and helped buckle him in “I’m going to put your backpack under my seat so if you need anything just let me or auntie know ok?” Derek asked Lucas who said ok before he looked out the window.
“What are they doing uncle Der?” Lucas asked Derek “they are loading suitcases in the cargo area of the plane.” Derek said “oh, that’s cool.” Lucas said “Luke, have you ever been on a plane before?” Meredith asked her nephew “no, my first time.” Lucas said “do you want to sit in the middle?” Meredith asked Lucas “no, I like to look out the window, it makes me feel better.” Lucas said “ok buddy, but if you get scared you can hold my hand.” Derek told his nephew.
Lucas held Derek’s hand while they took off as he was scared but overall he did good and once they were in the air Lucas felt better “I’m tired, I’m going to sleep.” Lucas said “sure buddy, we’ll wake you up when we land in Seattle.” Derek told Lucas who said ok but he had a hard time falling asleep “once we don’t have to wear our seatbelts, you can lay your head in my lap if that would help.” Derek asked Lucas who was willing to give it a try.
Lucas took a small nap maybe half an hour before he couldn’t sleep anymore so he sat up and played with some toys that his aunt and uncle bought him from the gift shop while they waited to board the plane.
Landing!
Lucas did very good on the flight and was super respectful of the crew and other passengers “Luke, can you please help me put the toys in your backpack, we’re going to land soon.” Derek said holding the backpack.
“Sure, I’m almost done with my snack.” Lucas said while he looked tired “when we get home why don’t either uncle Der give you a bath or auntie can then we can read to you and get you in bed so you can sleep.” Meredith said “it’s going to be late buddy and I bet you’re super tired.” Derek said “ok, a bath sounds good.” Lucas told his uncle who smiled.
Lucas held Meredith’s hand while they walked in the airport “do you need to go to the bathroom before we head for our car?” Lucas said yes please before Derek took him as he needed to go himself.
After the bathroom Derek held Lucas in his arms “we just need his suitcase then we can go.” Meredith said as they headed to baggage claim and got Lucas’ suitcase.
Derek placed Lucas in the car seat and buckled him in before he drove them to the house “tomorrow we have the day off then the next day you can come with us to the hospital and stay in the daycare center, we’ll be working but we’ll make sure to check on you and have lunch with you if we can ok Lu?” Meredith asked Lucas who said ok.
After a quick bath and story Lucas was tired so he was glad to be in bed “if you need anything please don’t hesitate to wake us up.” Derek told Lucas who said ok before he closed his eyes and fell asleep.
