Work Text:
Nicky looked at Joe, who was trying to get a pinpoint on the Nazis, who had chased them after they had blown up a local office. They had sought refuge in a bomb-out house. The reason why they chose this house was because of the unexploded bomb in the room, which must have been from last week's air strike. There was a big chance that no one would look after them there.
"Are we in the clear?" Nicky wanted to know. "I could really use a moment's rest or two."
“For now,” Joe replied, looking out the window again. "But we need to get going before dawn."
Nicky slid down the wall with his sword in one hand and a gun in the other. He couldn't remember the last time he had been this tired. Joe looked over at the man he loved with his entire heart. He felt the same as Nicky was doing right now.
"Let me hold you," Joe said. "It has been too long since the last time."
"That's the truth, but it's a bad idea," Nicky replied. "Especially since we got Nazis after us."
Joe slid down next to Nicky and gave him a tired smile.
"I left a surprise outside like the one in Constantinople. It will give us a headstart if needed, and if they make it through the front door, we got that bomb," Joe said as he pulled Nicky closer to him. They both hoped it didn't come to the point where they had to fire at that big bomb. It would be an ugly death. "So, place your head on my chest and let me hold you while you rest. I'll keep you safe as always in your sleep."
It was enough for Nicky, and he did it. He decided to sleep with the gun in his hand. It was good to be prepared in case the Nazis turned up.
"I have missed this," Nicky said. "Being in your arms."
"So, have I," Joe replied. "Missed having you in my arms."
"When this war is over," Nicky said with a yawn. "Please take me somewhere where no one will find us, and you'll hold me for an eternity."
Joe looked down at Nicky, who had fallen asleep.
"I promise you," Joe said before kissing Nicky's forehead. "I hold you longer than an eternity in my arms."
While Nicky was sleeping, Joe didn't take his eyes off the front door. When it became dawn, they were gone.
