Drake the Human

Summary:

Collin didn’t consider what could happen if the closest living being was the very person he was trying to protect…

Work Text:

In the event that my powers, or the darkness inside my head were to ever attempt to take what little control I had, what was left of my humanity would be ejected from my body and into the closest living thing. Whether it be another human being, a snake, or an enderman, my humanity would latch onto the creature and become a part of it. Whatever is left of this conscience would be transferred to this new body. This new person it would create.

“Whether it be another human being…”

Perhaps Collin should have been more specific with his failsafe. A thought to this effect passed through his mind as he faded, though filled with much more panic and dread.

The terrified eyes before him were his own brother’s, and as he began to be able to see through them back at himself, vision doubled, he feared for Armen’s safety. Collin had done this, all of this, to keep him safe. To give his brother the companionship and protection he had failed to provide as the oldest. But Armen hadn’t stayed away like he was told, so as the nearest living creature, he was the spell’s target. Collin’s humanity would be expelled onto Armen. There was no going back now.

If Collin’s mind had more time to retain conscious thought, he would have pondered the nature of souls and what would become of his and his brother’s.

Would they be free?

Would they be stuck in the new body separately, or would they recombine into a new soul?

Is that a rebirth, or is it a second death he’s fated his little brother to?

Fortunately, he was gone long before he could overthink the philosophical consequences.

Collin’s former body racked and writhed. Its new sole puppeteer was in too weak a state to stick around and finish off what was left of the former resident. As it stumbled away into the forest, a brand-new being in the clearing shivered in the moonlight and opened his bright blue eyes for the first time. Drake the human.

Notes:

At first this was going to be a brief opener to a longer oneshot following human!Drake’s life and what would be different in this AU. But I wanted to practice making shorter oneshots anyways so I’ll just leave it here for now and maybe revisit it another time.
