Work Text:
Sucrose was already sitting at a table. Lumine’s heart almost skipped a beat at the sight of the mint-green-haired girl. She took a deep breath before walking over and pulling a chair next to Sucrose.
Lumine couldn’t help but smile as Sucrose looked up at her in surprise. Sucrose wasn’t even wearing headphones but still didn’t hear her. I must have broken her concentration, Lumine thought as her eyes scanned the countless biology notes on the table.
“I hope I’m not too late?” Lumine asked as she put her bag down before sitting down.
Sucrose glances at the time on her watch before shaking her head, “No, no. I came a few minutes earlier. You’re on time.”
Lumine chuckled, “Oh, good.”
Sucrose stared at her a second longer than normal before nodding and turning back to her notes. She tucked some hair behind her ear, revealing the red that painted the top of it. Lumine bit the inside of her lip to stop herself from smiling like a fool.
Lumine turned away and dug for her AirPods in her bag. She could never study without listening to some music. Recently jazz has been working well for her. But she frowned when she couldn’t feel the familiar smooth case. She pulled the bag closer and carefully dug through each pocket only to find nothing but her books and stationery.
“Shit.”
Lumine’s frown only grew deeper as she grumbled and pulled her notes and pens out. Sucrose glanced over with a light concern, unsure whether to speak up and ask what was wrong. Lumine leaned back into her chair, glaring at the bag like it was responsible for her missing AirPods.
“Did you…forget something?”
Lumine sighed at Sucrose’s question, “My AirPods. I usually listen to music while I work.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, I guess I’ll just have to study without it,” Lumine said as she continued to glare at her bag.
Sucrose looked away, fiddling with her pen before looking back at the glaring Lumine, “I…I have some earphones if you want to still listen to your music.”
Lumine blinked and looked at Sucrose, “Don’t you need it?”
Sucrose shook her head, “I don’t listen to music while I study. I just have them on me if I need to watch a video at the library.”
“Well, thank you.” Lumine smiled brightly at Sucrose who looked away with a hint of red on her cheeks. Sucrose pulled her earphones out of her bag, making Lumine curse internally as she realised that it had an earphone jack.
“Is something wrong?” Sucrose’s eyebrows furrowed at Lumine’s strained smile.
“I have an iPhone…”
“…”
Lumine rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly as Sucrose stared at her questioningly, “They don’t put a jack in any of the new models.”
Sucrose’s face scrunched up which looked quite adorable in Lumine’s eyes, “Why would they do that? Isn’t that a huge design flaw? Android devices still have it.”
Lumine sighed, “Yeah, I think they did it to make more people buy AirPods.”
“That’s ridiculous.”
“That’s capitalism.”
Sucrose pursed her lips at Lumine’s comment before pulling out her phone from her pocket. She quickly tapped her lock pin and opened her Spotify. Sucrose then plugged the earphones into her phone and offered it to Lumine, “Here.”
Lumine stared at it with wide unblinking eyes, “Uh.”
“Take it. I give my permission for you to use it.”
A flush of heat rose to Lumine’s cheeks as she hesitantly took Sucrose’s phone, “Thanks.”
Sucrose simply hummed a reply before getting back to work. Lumine’s gaze lingered on the generous and hardworking, spectacled girl before her. Eventually, she turned away before Sucrose could notice her lingering gaze and put on the earphones. Let’s see if I can find my profile and listen to the playlists that I made public, she thought before her eyes paused at her name. Lumine’s heart almost skipped a beat. There was a playlist titled ‘Lumine’ in Sucrose’s library.
Lumine took a quick glance at the owner of the playlist before sneakingly pressing shuffle. She turned off the phone and pretended everything was normal. Pretending that her heart wasn’t as loud as the music playing in her ears.
This is cute, Lumine thought as she listened to the songs. A permanent smile on her lips as she wrote down some notes. There were a lot of songs by the artist Laufey and other soft love-type songs. Lumine didn’t expect Sucrose’s taste in music to be as sweet as her name.
She tried her best to hold back a grin whenever she remembered that this playlist was made for her. If she still had doubts that Sucrose felt the same way, then this was the nail to the coffin of their mutual feelings.
“…You have good taste in music,” Lumine said innocently.
“W-What?” Sucrose flusteredly tore her gaze away from her work and onto Lumine who continued to innocently smile at her.
“You have good taste in music,” Lumine repeated before continuing, “I was just listening to one of your playlists.”
“O-Oh, really?” Sucrose nervously fiddled with her pen. She looked like she was hiding something. Lumine simply hummed at the response, making her best Kaeya impression as she twirled the wires of the earphones around her finger.
“W-What playlist?”
“A really good one. Which reminds me, can I send a screenshot of it to myself? I want to add some of the songs to my library,” Lumine asked, expertly deflecting Sucrose’s question.
Sucrose was unprepared for Lumine’s deflection and was successfully distracted by the question, “Oh, um, okay.”
Lumine smiled brightly and gave Sucrose her phone back to unlock. Sucrose blinked before quickly tapping her pin.
“Thanks, Sucrose.”
She took back the phone and stealthily took a screenshot of the playlist before texting it to herself. Lumine made sure to address Sucrose in the message. A surprise for later, Lumine internally smirked while her exterior remained nonchalant.
The rest of the study date went without a hitch. Sucrose was completely unaware of the surprise set-up for her and Lumine was trying her best not to show her excitement for said surprise. They parted ways after an hour, a good amount of work done. Lumine left on her bike while Sucrose caught a bus.
Sucrose sat down near the window, placing her bag on her lap as she waited for the bus to move. Her phone vibrated in her pocket and slipped it out to check the notification. It was a text message that read: ‘Thanks for the playlist <3’.
The heat rose on Sucrose’s cherub-like cheeks. She wondered what playlist exactly Lumine liked so much as she tapped her lock pin. She opened her messaging app only for her eyes to widen in surprise, her face warmer than a toaster as she saw the screenshot. But what made it worse (or better) was the message attached to the screenshot.
‘I’ll make one for you too ;3’.
Lumine was not good for Sucrose’s heart.
