Work Text:

“I see. So, how much?” A silence fell upon the two. Kumana jerked her head up at the man standing next to her and furrowed her brows. It took a moment to process, but who would ask such a bizarre question? She couldn’t contain the anger at this point and time, and suddenly snapped at the man.

“Are you serious right now?” Daisuke almost flinched at her loud question. He lightly rose a brow, looking down at her and opening his mouth to reply, but was cut off abruptly by a scoff.

“I seriously can’t with you people..” she muttered, her voice emphasizing the word can’t . Kumana sounded like she was losing her mind. Daisuke sent her a harsh glare, you know, the one you wouldn’t normally see on him unless someone really tested his patience to the bare minimum. Daisuke really disliked Kumana.

“What?” he said, sounding as if he wasn’t supposed to ask the question. The kind a kid would say to his parents if he did something wrong and pretended he didn’t know. As if the question were stupid.

“Don’t you understand? Money doesn’t solve everything. I don’t want your money. I don’t.” Kumana crossed her legs in a formal position, folding her hands in her lap.

“Then what do you want?” Daisuke asked, making him seem like a stupid man. Kumana held in the urge to roll her eyes. Instead, she looked up at the man she refused to call an acquaintance, attitude held in her eyes.

“I want an apology , Kambe.” she retorted firmly. Daisuke’s eyebrows rose slightly, and he tore his gaze away from her, suddenly finding the sunset colored horizon interesting. Another breathtaking silence fell upon the two, and Kumana kept her eyesight strict on the man named Kambe Daisuke, who kept his face blank and unreadable. Nonetheless she refused to tear her eyes away from him. What was gonna be his next move? It was crucial. Minutes passed and finally, he did something. It was something Kumana didn’t expect, even from Kambe. He turned around, facing away from the woman, and without further speech, walked away. Kumana gawked, a pained look on her face. She chuckled in disbelief, watching his black suit back grow farther away from her, a small smile making its way to her lips. But this one was of pure amusement, a crazed intent behind it.

“So that’s it, huh? No apology? Is an apology that hard for you to do? Everything else seems so easy for you, and here you can’t even muster up an apology to your co -worker?” She scoffed again, but was met with utter silence from him. So she stood up.

“This is why I really dislike you people. Thinking you’re oh so rich with money at your leisure with your little hands in your nice pockets!” Kumana yelled, trying to show her anger at this point so she could get some type of reaction out of him. However, Daisuke didn’t stop walking, but his expression did change. It changed into one of irritation. Kumana huffed, shaking her head while small beads of tears made way to the corners of her eyes. Not because she was sad, but because of how angry she was.

“You guys make me sick . I refused to acknowledge it at first, but you know what? I see it now. You people are just- pieces of work ! Doing nothing but using your cash just to get your way, and it works. Which is annoying and heartbreaking to those who work so hard to try to get where they want to be, and most of the time all their hard work doesn’t pay off. So you know what?” Daisuke stopped in his tracks at Kumana’s voice which was cracking and wavering. Part of it tugged at his heartstrings.

“Screw you.” Daisuke quickly turned around to say something, but Kumana was already up, and now her back was facing him . Although as she walked away, Daisuke actually felt a twinge of guilt in his chest, and a yearn to hear her voice yell at him again.
