Family Timeline:
-Alcina takes power in House Dimitrescu in 1960, kicking out her older sister and niece
-Her sister (unnamed) is 52, and her niece (unnamed) is 19 when she casts them out from House Dimitrescu, but not before branding them both with the flower that represents the house crest.
-Her niece moves into the village, keeping her heritage a secret from the villagers. None of them knew her anyway, as she had hardly left the castle due to her being set up to inherit the house and become its figurehead until she was cast out when Mother Miranda put Alcina on the throne.
-She lives with her mother in the Village for the rest of their lives, Dorin’s father being a traveler who came to the village to trade, and was never present in Dorin’s life.
When Dorin turned 15, Alcina sent out her daughters to collect him and his mother, returning them to House Dimitrescu in order to give him the same branding mark that his mother and grandmother were given. His mother was held down by Bela and Cassandra, while Daniella held Dorin in place as Alcina burned the flower into his shoulder, forcing his mother to watch him scream in pain. Afterwards, they were both allowed to return to their home, where his mother cared for his wound so that it would not get infected.
-When they returned from the castle, however, many of the villagers were wary, and rumors began to spread. Within a few weeks, the entire village was suspicious of them, thinking that they had upset Mother Miranda somehow and were punished by Lady Dimitrescu. They were quickly outcast, and their lives became much harder. Assuming it was her “fornication” with an outsider that had upset Mother Miranda, Dorin’s mother was shunned and often hassled. She lost her job as a gardener (under house Beneviento) very quickly, and the only job she was able to get was as a laborer in the mines. It paid very little, and they fell into poverty within a year of Dorin’s branding. She was tasked with the worst labor in the mines, which resulted in her breathing in dangerous fumes on a daily basis without proper protection, and she began to fall ill. With the family's natural photosensitivity to sunlight, none of the village doctors were willing to see her on account that she would have to visit them at night, and with her being an outcast for (presumably) upsetting Mother Miranda, none were willing to risk being seen with her let alone at night. She was completely unable to get medicine with her only option being buying it from the merchants who came to the village, but they were few and far between, and her medicine was not cheap.
-Realizing that they were out of options, Dorin began working at age 17, also taking a job in the mines. While he was considered just as much of an outcast as his mother, many villagers pitied him. They felt bad that he should be punished for his mother’s misdoings, but dare not show him any kindness beyond that, as they feared doing so would upset Mother Miranda. The most kindness he was ever shown was by ___, a girl around his age. She would often sneak him bread and other food that was nearly stale, as she could get away with giving him the food her family was going to throw out anyway. However, her father eventually found out, and in a rage assumed that Dorin was coercing her into helping him so that he could marry her. Not wanting his daughter to be lumped into the family that had displeased Mother Miranda, he spread rumors that Dorin was tricking his daughter and trying to extort her, and Dorin quickly became just as despised as his mother by the villagers, if not more.
-After his mother’s death when he is 19, he continues working in the mines, often working at the forge to smelt the metal down to as a mechanic to fix things or create new inventions. He most likely would’ve been fired and outcast, given the same job as his mother, but he had grown to be nearly 7 and a half feet tall, and was incredibly strong from working in the mines for the past 2 years, and no one really wanted to risk pissing him off.
-In truth, Dorin was a kind person. While he didn’t like the villagers' idea of him, he understood why they had it. His mother had passed before she could explain exactly why they hid that they were part of House Dimitrescu, but he trusted his family and assumed there must be a reason, and it was probably safer to keep the secret.
-A few years went by, and Dorin continued to live his life, making an honest living in the mines under Lord Heisenberg’s domain. But that all changed one day, Lord Heisenberg himself showed up at the mines. He usually sent someone else to do inspections, but it was the Lord of the fourth house in the flesh this time. Dorin paid him no mind, continuing on with his work. Heisenberg loudly did his inspection, praising some and scolding others, until he finally made his way over to Dorin’s workstation. He made a joke about his height, and Dorin simply nodded respectfully. He wasn’t really paying attention, only giving the Lord respect and focusing on his work. However, Heisenberg noticed the brand on his shoulder, and knew it to be Alcina’s work.
-A few days later, Dorin made his way home after work, groceries in hand from stopping to trade at the market. When he opened the door, he was surprised to see Heisenberg himself sitting on his kitchen table.
It was here that Heisenberg explained that he had seen the brand, and that he knew who Dorin “belonged to.” He complimented his work, his mechanical skill, and his strength, and made him an offer: Work with Heisenberg, swear loyalty to him, and he would secure him a better life. No more going hungry because all he could afford was the nearly moldy bread he held in his arms, no more ill fitting tank tops that hadn’t been replaced since he was a teenager, no more hoping he didn’t freeze to death overnight because he couldn’t afford firewood. All of that would be handled, and he would even be protected should Alcina try to hurt him, so long as he worked under Heisenberg, made things for him, fixed things for him, and allowed him to carve a new mark on his back; a way of Heisenberg staking his claim.
-Dorin agreed, seeing no reason why he shouldn’t, and allowed Heisenberg to take a knife to his shoulder and neck. He cut at his flesh until a poor depiction of a windmill with horseshoes leaning up against it was wrapped around the flower that had been burned into him so long ago.
-After that, Heisenberg fulfilled his promise. New clothes were found in closets and drawers, food was found in all the pantries, endless firewood stacked next to the fireplace and much more. Dorin continued his work at the mines, the only real changes for him being the new machines Heisenberg sent him to fix and the pain in his shoulder from the new mark. It had been nearly 10 years since one of the Lords had wounded his skin, and he was honestly surprised that he allowed it to happen again, but still, he was content to continue working as Heisenberg’s mechanic and forge master for the foreseeable future…
