Work Text:

The last sword fell to the ground. From up on his horse, Caesar looked around sadly. Hundreds of dead men surrounded him. His entire army had been wiped out except for a few who managed to play dead and not get trampled. Despite this, he had been able to just barely win the fight, his military tactics inevitably granting him victory.

He took his horse and the last few men he had left and galloped back towards their camp. The smoke from fireplaces shone out above the mountains surrounding the valley they had chosen to put their base in. He brought his injured and dying men to the medical tent before retiring to his own, worn out from hours of fighting. He collapsed on his cot with a sigh, closing his eyes and surrendering to sleep; but he could never fall into a slumber.

It could not have been more than a few minutes when he heard the ruffle of fabric and the sounds of someone entering his tent. He kept his eyes closed. He felt a soft hand rest upon his leg, another hand rubbing his shoulders gently. His eyes fluttered open to the sight of his dear Brutus. He had left the tent’s door slightly open, letting the golden light of the setting sun in behind him. The sun’s rays illuminated Brutus like an angel, pulling him up from his upset slumber. Brutus sat next to Caesar on his cot, letting his lover lean on him.

Brutus gazed over at him, smiling. Caesar looked up through tired eyes, taking in every crease and curve of his lover’s face.

Brutus pulled Caesar closer, “Hey.”

“Hi,” Caesar whispered back, tucking his face into the crook of Brutus’ neck.

“Rough battle?”

“Mm-hmm.”

Brutus gently kissed the top of Caesar’s head, pulling him into a tighter hug. The two of them sat together like that for a long moment, soaking in the last of the sun as it faded below the horizon. They fell asleep in each other’s arms, ready to take on the world's hardships together.
