Chapter Text

"Are you sure this is a good idea?" You turned to your friend, Emily, as you both sat nursing strong drinks. You'd just landed in Columbia and weren't needed for work for a couple of days. Emily had wanted to go straight to the hotel and get a head start on work, but you'd convinced her to go out for a drink with you. It was your first time outside of the US and you wanted to enjoy it before being drowned in workloads.
"Come on, just let loose!" You grinned at her as you finished your drink and signalled the bartender for another one. You leaned back in your seat, brushing your hair back from your face with a content hum as your eyes swept over the patrons in the bar. It was busy but not overwhelmingly so, snippets of conversation floated through between songs coming from a jukebox in the corner, Spanish artists playing you didn't know but could appreciate their talents. The two of you had wandered the small town in the day and found this bar en route to the hotel when the idea had hit you to have a proper night out. Emily had insisted on having food first, not wanting to spend her first few days here working through a hangover. The two of you had been working together for a couple of years now and had become pretty close. So when it was suggested that someone be sent to Columbia for work, you'd jumped at the chance. Emily spoke better Spanish than you but you knew enough to get by without problems.
"I think we caught some attention." Emily muttered into her glass, you looked at her questioningly before casually turning to see where she was looking. It took a moment or two before you spotted a couple of guys sat a few tables away. One caught your eye in particular, dark eyes meeting yours briefly before looking away. He had messy hair and a serious look to his face but he was undeniably handsome, even though you didn't usually like guys with moustaches - it seemed to complete his look. You looked back at Emily, perking one eyebrow slightly.
"So which one were you hoping will come and buy you a drink?" You teased with a laugh, Emily shrugging as she put her glass down.
"The guy in the blue shirt. He reminds me of someone I used to know." You clicked your tongue against your teeth. "Used to know, that means it's probably not a good thing you want his attention." You teased, Emily pointing a finger at you with a laugh.
"Easy now, don't go psychoanalytic on me. It's just a hypothetical. You didn't answer though." You shrugged, takijg a swallow of your drink.
"Dark eyes and moustache. He's hot." Emily subtly looked at the group before back at you.
"I can see that." She nodded in approval before you both laughed, knowing it was silly and was soon forgotten in lieu of talking about your upcoming meeting with your new workmates, wondering who you'd meet and what would happen. Emily fell quiet after a moment, seemingly distracted and before you could turn around, you heard a distinctly American voice behind you.
"Would you ladies mind if we joined you?" You slowly turned and found yourself looking up at the same rich chocolate eyes you'd locked gazes a little while ago. You glanced at Emily and shrugged, nudging the chair beside you with your foot.
"Go ahead." You smiled, the three men sat down. You took them in for a moment, from the blonde, to the guy Emily had clocked to the man directly beside you. They had an air of quiet confidence to them, but they weren't difficult to read. A smile played over your lips as the seat closest to you was taken by the moustached guy. He introduced himself as Javier then introduced his friends. You really didn't pay attention to their names though, more distracted by the warmth of his knee resting against yours and those gorgeous eyes.
"I'm Katrina and this is my friend Rachel." Emily grinned and gave a small wave, you always used fake names when anyone approached either of you on a night out. And considering this was your first night in Columbia, you weren't about to give your real names to three random men. Javier signalled the staff to get a round of drinks in, apparently he was a regular to be able to do that without saying more than two words. You tried to keep your brain out of work mode, but by the look on Emily's face; you knew she was doing the same thing. You smiled to yourself, offering bits of information and half truths when Javier or one of the others asked a question. It was fun, to just relax and laugh, get to know new people. Javier was subtly flirting, testing the waters and you saw the subtle way his eye lit up when you leaned into it; placing a hand on his arm and giving your best seductive smile.
Somewhere between drinks and cigarettes, you and Javier wound up alone at the table, both slightly facing each other as you spoke. Javier exhaled smoke as he stubbed a cigarette out into the half full ashtray before his eyes were on you.
"So what work do you do?" He asked, picking up his glass as his free hand came to rest on the outside of your knee. You smiled and tilted your head.
"I read people for a living. Get in their heads and figure out who they are and why they do what they do." You grinned a little, you were pretty good at it too. Javier nodded a little, eyes watching you over the rim of his glass.
"What can you tell me about me then?" He asked, you smirked, twisting to face him properly. You reached to take his hand into yours, watching your fingertips dance along his fingers and the palm of his hand.
"You work with your hands a lot but not manual labour. You're naturally untrusting and like to let others think they're taking the lead. You're in law enforcement of some sort, and you're only here for work. You don't live here, you're American born and raised. Your accent is a little hard to place though, I feel with speaking Spanish at home and at work as well as moving states and countries for work - your accent is a cocktail of different places." You grinned a little, the flicker in Javier's eyes confirmed you were right about everything. You leaned in closer, glancing down momentarily before tilting your head as you looked at him. "You're not a cop… something higher than that but I'm not sure what yet." You mused, feeling Javier's thumb running along the inside of your wrist as he watched you. He pulled a face as he watched you.
"Impressive. You are good at your job." He teased, you grinned a little as you watched him.
"So are you going to tell me what your job is? Or should I pick your badge off the floor and read it outloud?" Javier blinked before looking down, just under his chair was the leather bifold that had his police badge in. You had instantly recognised the badge but couldn't place what unit he worked in. Javier snorted, grabbing it off the floor and shoving it in his pocket.
"So you cheated?" You shook your head, squeezing Javier's knee under your hand.
"Only that last line, I clocked your badge as I was finishing telling you." You grinned, Javier watching you with a hum in his throat. He glanced up as the bartender signalled last orders before he looked back at you.
"What do you say to one last drink?" He said, voice soft despite its deep tone. You smirked, watching him.
"I say why not."

You were woken up the next morning by a noise somewhere outside of the bedroom. You rolled onto your stomach, stretching an arm out in search of your companion. You could still feel his fingers on your hips and the way he'd quickly learnt how to make you moan and gasp his name. Your eyes opened when your hand met an empty bed instead Javier. You squinted a little, staring at the empty bed in disappointment before realising you could hear his voice coming from elsewhere in the apartment. Sitting up, you untangled yourself from the bedding, pausing once stood up. Your knees still felt weak and you could see bruising blooming where he'd left bites and gripped you closer. It sent a shiver of pleasure up your spine as you reached out and grabbed his shirt, pulling it on over your naked body and heading to the bathroom. You used the toilet, took a moment to clean your face before finding a toothbrush still in the package in a cabinet under the sink. You grinned to yourself, glad to be able to clean up properly. You ruffled a hand through your hair to make sure it was more sex ruffled than bed-head before padding out to find Javier. To your disappointment, he was fully dressed and stood with his back to you as he spoke into the phone by his ear and sipped his coffee. You could hear other mans voice on the phone, you couldn't hear what he said but he seemed annoyed by how he barely took a breath between words. You grabbed some coffee and pulled yourself up to sit on the breakfast bar, waiting patiently for Javier to finish.
"Right. I'll be there soon. Gimme like, fifteen minutes. Bye." He hung up and huffed out a sigh before he turned, pausing momentarily in surprise that you'd appeared. The way he froze and his Addams apple bobbed in his throat, wearing just his shirt had created the desired effect. His eyes trailed over your legs before back to your face, you gave him a faux innocent smile as you sipped your coffee. It was such a confidence boost that even in the light of morning, Javier was still attracted to you.
"I was just coming to see if you were up." He said softly, a hand resting against his hip as he watched you.
"Well when a girl rolls over and finds a cold empty bed, she tends to wake up." You teased with a playful smile.
"Sorry. Duty calls." You pouted at him, putting the mug down as he moved closer to you. Standing between your knees as his hands skimmed over your hips. "You should definitely keep that shirt on though." He muttered, looking down at you before his eyes met yours.
"I'm guessing that grumpy sounding voice on the phone was your boss?" You mused, reaching to run a hand through his messy hair.
"My partner actually. He's not much of a morning person and our main focus at the moment is making him a massive grouch." You chuckled, watching Javier. He was behind his walls again, only giving brief flickers of small insights into him. You hummed and nodded.
"You should probably go then. I'll let myself out and get a taxi to my hotel, I won't steal anything. Scouts honour." You grinned, determined to get a glimpse of the beautiful smile you'd seen briefly the night before. Javier thought it through for a moment before he nodded.
"Sure." You hummed, wrapping his tie around your fingers as you pulled him closer, nudging your nose against his.
"Bésame." You muttered, Javier swallowing as he leaned in and pressed his lips against yours, a hand resting against your waist and pulling you against his firm chest. You'd made fun of Emily for learning how to demand kisses in Spanish, but suddenly it had come in handy. His tongue traced your lower lip before the kiss was deepened, you hooked your legs around his hips and slid your hands over his chest. Javier was more addictive than any drugs or alcohol, part of you regretted giving him a fake name the night before. But given he didn't offer his phone number or anything, you assumed this was a one time thing. As he pulled back, your eyes met as he gave a lazy grin.
"I really gotta go or Murphy's gonna have my ass for being late." You pouted a little, pressing a kiss to Javier's nose cutely.
"Go catch the bad guys." You let go of him, Javier seemingly hesitating for a moment before he peeled himself away from you to grab his things. He paused by the front door, his eyes watching you before he was gone. You grinned to yourself, he was brave just leaving you alone in his apartment but you guessed if he was in law enforcement, he'd have ways to find you. So you finished your coffee, got dressed and headed back to the hotel.

"So do you think you'll see him again?" Emily asked as you sat in her room eating breakfast. You shrugged, leaning back against the headboard of her bed.
"Considering I gave him a fake name and didn't leave my phone number, I doubt it." You admitted, slightly disappointed at the idea but you only had a one night stand once before and you'd never seen that guy again so you weren't expecting to see Javier again.
"I mean you do know where he lives." She pointed out with a laugh.
"And he was insanely hot. My god." You sighed with a laugh. "But it might be weird to just turn up again and be all 'hey I gave you a fake name sorry about that but wanna grab a drink sometime?' I can't imagine how that would go." You laughed, Emily making a noise of agreement.
"What a way to start our time here." She teased, nudging you playfully with her foot. "You better hope that bite mark on your collarbone fades before tomorrow, can't imagine our new boss is going to appreciate that." You both laughed, you figured you'd just cover it with makeup if need be. The two of you did a little sightseeing, exploring the area for the rest of the day, figuring you might as well enjoy your last free day before work began.

Walking into the DEA office was a little nerve wracking, you'd gotten used to the small office the FBI had granted your team. So when the chance to work with another team had come up, you'd jumped at the chance. To try to get people to take you all more seriously and help them where possible. You hadn't been sure there was much you could do but it was worth a shot. Your new boss met you and Emily by the front door, shaking your hands as he introduced himself then lead you through to the offices where everyone else was. He pointed to an empty room that you and Emily would have as your space before leading you to a meeting room where everyone was gathered.
"Attention gentlemen. We have some extra help joining us today, these ladies are here from the Behavioural Analysis Unit at the FBI. We've been told they'll be able to help with our mission to catch Escobar. They focus on the psychology of these psychos and can get a few steps ahead hopefully. I hope you'll make them feel welcome." He turned and introduced you both to the team as you stepped in. You looked around the table at the men all staring back at you and Emily. Your heart fell into your stomach as you met a familiar pair of dark eyes, but you never let it show. Keeping your professional smile despite the way Javier was staring at you.
"I know a lot of you are probably wondering how the hell we'll help, but I can assure you, sometimes a different look at things can nudge a case out of a dip and move forward positively." You gave a nod of your head, knowing a few of them were annoyed by the addition to the team. Most people still didn't take the BAU seriously, it was still early days and at least the FBI heads knew it could be helpful.
"Murphy, I want you to bring these ladies up to speed on what we know so far." A blonde man opposite Javier nodded, standing up to lead you out of the room so he could give you information. As you walked out, you could feel Javier's eyes burning into the back of your head but you resisted looking back at him. Now you knew the apparent 'grouch' who had been nagging Javier the previous morning. Stephen Murphy had a serious air to him but he was welcoming as could be when he was dealing with constantly being five steps behind Escobar.
"If you need anything, Peña and I have the office across from yours." He gave a tight but polite smile before excusing himself to fetch what information had been prepared for you both.
Once you had your information packet, you and Emily headed to your office to get settled and start looking through everything. You pinned a few things up across the board on one side of the room, running a hand through your hair. It was a lot to take in and they'd already made good headway with it all. But after Pablo Escobar's recent escape from La Catedral, they'd needed more hands on deck to help. There was talks of bringing in more from the FBI and CIA to help as well. You were the first new faces in an expanding team and you figured getting comfortable wasn't an option as at any point you could be turfed out to make room for more players. A frown played over your face as you looked at it all, hearing the door open and close behind you. You just assumed it was Emily coming in with some more stuff and stayed looking over the information.
"I think the big wigs have underestimated how smart Escobar is… no wonder this team is frustrated when everything they want to do gets shut down or denied. Murphy said this is just a small percentage of what they have so far." You pursed your lips, frowning when Emily didn't answer. "Em?" You turned around, finding Javier stood by the door, arms folded over his broad chest as he watched you. "Javier." You smiled, the man tilting his head slightly as he perked one eyebrow.
"So, it seems you lied to me." He started, you rolled your shoulders, moving to sit on the edge of your desk.
"I didn't know you were DEA. You were just a hot guy in a bar, fake names has always been a safety net Emily and I have used." Javier nodded, he didn't seem annoyed though.
"Impressive." He mused, tapping a finger against his own arm as he thought for a moment.
"Look, I don't intend on making what happened last night affect our work. I won't go around telling everyone or expecting anything to happen again." Javier tilted his head, a hint of something unplaceable in his eyes before he just gave a smile.
"I'm not worried. Impressed." He mused, pushing himself up to stand properly when the door opened behind him and Emily walked in with a box balanced in her arms. He took it from her and placed it on the desk beside you. Just having him so close caused your stomach to twist excitedly, the way he glanced up at you from under his lashes told you he felt it too. He excused himself before heading out, Emily stood frozen by her desk.
"Holy shit. What are the chances?" She breathed, making sure the door was closed. You let out a breath you hadn't realised you'd been holding in.
"I know. I know. How the hell am I going to be able to work with him?" You snorted softly, unfastening your jacket and tossing it over the back of your chair. "I saw his police badge that night in the bar, never thought he'd be DEA." You ruffled a hand through your hair before grabbing a bottle of water from your bag. "Anyway, enough of that. We have work to do."

"I've never seen that look on your face before Javi. You feeling okay?" Steve grinned, looking over at Javier. The other male just exhaled his cigarette smoke, his eyes never leaving the paperwork spread over his desk.
"I don't know what you're talking about." He muttered, tugging out a couple of photos that had been dumped on his desk. Steve snorted, leaning back in his seat as he watched Javier.
"You know her." Javier paused briefly, shaking his head as he tapped the ash off of the end of his cigarette.
"Steve, we aren't schoolgirls swapping gossip. Be professional." He glanced over at the blonde, being met with only a grin.
"Yeah. You know her."
