A bush rustled behind her.
She darted through the overhang and the vines in front of her, wiping a stray web from her face as she stumbled, but kept her ground.
A crow squawked from up above, upset his nap had been disturbed. All else was silent.

Her foot caught on an unseen root in front of a log. She grasped air as she tried but failed to catch herself.
Footsteps behind her.

The crunching of leaves was now the only sound as she awaited her fate, knowing it was far too late to run again.
The steps continued until they were right by her head. She refused to look at them until he reached down and grabbed her hair. Wrenching her upright, he grinned and tilted her chin up with his dagger.
The dagger she had given him.
His eyes gleamed as he stared down at her, tightening the grip on her head.
“You told me to be the light my dear. Now I will burn my path to tomorrow with the lamp you have given me.”
And with that, he stabbed her.
