Can Five Nights at Freddy's Survive a Decade?

Summary:

This is an essay project I wrote in a nonfiction writing college course. It shows how difficult the FNAF series is to explain to someone, especially an older gentleman with a distain for video games. The essay will be divided into chapters by each game. How successful was I? I got an A on it but no written feedback so who's to say.

Notes:

Some minor information about the games may be missing, but I had a struggle with proper clarity with my audience of one professor.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Chapter Text

Those familiar with the realms of video games developed by independent creators in 2014 to around 2017 might be familiar with the Five Nights at Freddy’s series. On the surface, the series of games is based on point and click survival where the player works as a night shift security guard at a Chuck-E-Cheese rip off, only to discover that the animatronic characters turn in to evil beings trying to break into your office. It’s hard to imagine that this concept would span over more than five games and develop its own novels. The advancements and success in the series has been credited to its deeper story yet messy storyline. Despite the original creator’s controversial opinions and the constant battle of fans leaping to conclusions on what will happen next, this series has been a near decade long achievement. So much so that it has captured Hollywood’s attention. Since there is no possible way the entire franchise can be explained within the constraints of fifteen pages, this essay will explain each game in the franchise that are ‘cannon,’ a nickname meaning that a source is true to the storyline, however complicated it may be.
