As the sun started setting, the students filled the gymnasium. The chatter picked up immediately. "Scara! You showed up!" A voice called out amongst the many others, gaining his attention. He turns around to see Kaveh. "Yeah, Layla guilt tripped me into coming." Scara replied, giving him a soft smile. "Are you you didn't come here just because I said I was?" Kaveh gave him a small grin, grabbing his hand. "I suppose you being here get help me decide to come a little bit.." Scara interlaced his fingers with Kaveh's. "Here, let's go find the others." They went off to look for their friend group, eventually spotting Candace with Layla by the drink table. "There you guys are!" Scara waved them over. "Oh, look who decided to show up to prom." Candace teased, crossing her arms. Her eyes glance down his outfit. "You look good, I will admit. Didn't know you had any other sense of fashion besides dressing in all black most of the time." Layla spoke up. "You do look really good, Scara. You too, Kaveh."
After about 2 hours, they were told that the slow dance song would play. Kaveh looked over at Scara. "May I have this dance?" He held out his hand. Scara nodded, taking his hand in his own. The music started playing and they danced together, their eyes piercing into the others'. The song ended as Kaveh almost leant in. He pulls back quickly. "What was that?" Scara asks, looking up to Kaveh. "Nothing.." Kaveh sighs. "If you say so.."
By the end of the night, Kaveh was driving Scara home. He pulled into the driveway and turned to see Scara asleep. He goes to tap his shoulder. "Scara, wake up. We're at your house." Scara's eyes fluttered open slowly. "Ah.. sorry.." Kaveh shook his head. "It's fine, I don't mind. Go get yourself some rest." Kaveh gives him a soft smile. "Thanks for the ride. Be careful driving home, Kaveh. Oh, and goodnight." Scara reaches for his hand and squeezes it tightly before walking up his stairs and going inside his house.
Time passes by quickly, 7 years to be exact and they hear about a reunion being held for their class.
Scara enters the gymnasium and immediately sees Layla. He goes and taps her on the shoulder. "Ah!" She jumps and turns around. "Oh, its just you, Scara. Its been so long, hasn't it?" Scara nodded. "It's nice to see you again, Layla." Layla smiles. "You too. Have you seen Kaveh yet?" Scara sighs. "No, not yet. We haven't even talked much since graduation honestly.." "Oh. Well, let's go find him then!" Layla ran off and Scara followed closely behind her.
"Scara?" A gentle voice was heard behind him. Scara turns around to see Kaveh. He nods quickly. "It's nice to see you again, Kaveh. It really is." Kaveh smiled softly. "Let's catch up then." Layla left them to go find Candace.
"So what have you been up to, Kaveh?" Scara asked, looking over at him. "Well I got into my dream college and things went well from there. I'm actually an architect now." Kaveh grinned. "That's good to hear." They continued to talk until most people had left. "Everyone's almost gone, should we leave?" Kaveh suggested. "Let's just wait it out. There's something else I need to tell you but I wanna make sure no one hears." Kaveh nodded, undoubtedly nervous yet curious.
Scara's eyes couldn't seem to leave Kaveh's. They just stood there in silence until everyone had left. Then Scara spoke up again. "Can we dance? Just you and me? No one else watching, no eyes on us but our own.." Kaveh nodded, grabbing his hand. They proceeded to dance and by the end of it, Kaveh found his lips on Scara's.
It's been two years since then and Kaveh finds himself back at that gymnasium. He walks inside and he puts on some music as Scara joins him. They dance one last time before Scara eventually vanishes. They might've been close and had each other for what seemed like forever but Kaveh was never Scara's and Scara was never Kaveh's.
