Like Break of Day

Summary:

Obsession can keep love alive.

Chapter 1: Damned

Notes:

This work began as a writing exercise: to write for a prompt every day, starting at 100 words for the first day, escalating to 200 on the second, and so-on until failure.

I only made it to day 8, but it still taught me a lot about the way I write, and I am happy to have undertaken it. There was no intention to have these prompts merge into a cohesive story, but they do, which was a very happy accident. Each story here went from conception to final upload in one day. Other than basic proofreading errors I have left each piece unedited, out of deference to the spirit of the challenge.

Chapter Text

We wore white dresses.

She put my hair in a twist, and I painted my nails jet black as she did her own. We ran out under the bright full moon, stifling our laughs as we chased each other across the meadow, into the woods, into the blind black shadow of an ancient oak. She sang her vows to me with her hand on my heart and her lips against mine, and I turned her round and whispered mine into the crown of her silken head.

We breathed deep the damp earth air, and I knew that I was damned.
