Sometimes The Mind Needs a Break

Summary:

Mind was used to headaches, but this? This was something different. Something worse.

Notes:

Fun fact! I actually got a migraine while writing this.
It may be cursed. /hj

Work Text:

Mind was used to headaches. He constantly got them, and staring at a bright screen in his dimly lit room never helped. He was never one to ask for help when they got bad. Instead he'd lock himself in his room and let himself suffer in silence, ignoring anyone who tried to help. He avoided medicine like the plague, claiming anyone who took it was "too weak to handle pain".

He closed the laptop and sighed, rubbing his temples. It was late and the other two would be gathering in the kitchen for the weekly dinner Heart has them doing now. As much as he hated them, he knew dealing with the dinner would be better than dealing with an upset Heart. He stood up, a wave of dizziness came rushing over him as his vision blurred. Mind grabbed his desk to steady himself, trying to ignore the throbbing pain in his head. Carefully, he walked out of his room. The lights burned his eyes and made the pain worse, but he had to ignore it.

"Mind!" The familiar voice of Heart pierced Mind's skull like a blade. "We thought you weren't coming! Soul and I just got done making everything."

"Yeah yeah. Lets just get this over with." A bitter tone flowed through his words as he sat down staring at the plate Soul placed in front of him. The food itself wasn't bad, a half way decent steak along with some vegetables, but to Mind it looked repulsive. The thought of eating anything made his stomach turn.

The other two sat down as well, engaging in some kind of conversation that he couldn't be bothered to listen to. The sound of their voices echoed in his head, making his headache worse. He pushed around the broccoli that was on is plate with his fork. The lights felt like the sun burning his eyes. He held his hand over his eyes, lightly pressing his thumb and middle finger over his temples as an attempt to manage the pain he was feeling.

"Mind!" Mind was pulled out of his trance by someone putting their hand on his shoulder. It was Soul. He looked up to see the two looking at him with concern. "Finally you acknowledge us."

"Are you okay? Is it the food?" Heart's voice was full of worry.

"I am perfectly fine." He mumbled before returning to pushing around his food, still not eating any of it. He noticed both of them had eaten a significant amount off their plates.

"You're clearly not!" Heart continued to rant on about Mind never letting anyone help him. He only stopped when Mind quickly stood up, causing his chair to fall to the floor.

"Can you just shut up for once?!" He stormed off, making it to the hallway before the dizziness returned. He had to lean against the wall, using it as a guide to his room. The dimly lit room was like a weight off his shoulders once finally reached it. He falls onto his bed, burying his head into his pillow. The pain was unbearable, but he didn't want to tell the others. He didn't want to admit weakness.

The two just sat there. They weren't shocked at the bitterness that Mind spoke with, that was normal, but something was clearly wrong. He hadn't eaten anything. His plate sat pretty much untouched. Soul even saw him stumble in the hall.

"Is he.. okay?" Heart stood up like he was going to chase after him, but Soul stopped him.

"You know how he gets. He's stubborn." He continued to eat his dinner.

"That doesn't mean we shouldn't try and help!"

Soul sighed.

"If it makes you feel better, I'll go check up on him after I'm finished eating."

"That would be nice. Please do that."

And so he did. Soul and Heart both finished eating. Heart took the dishes to the kitchen sink to clean them. Soul grabbed a glass of water and headed down to Minds room. He quietly knocked on the door. There was no response other than the sound of what Soul assumed to be Mind shuffling around his bed. He slowly opened the door and walked into the room.

"Go. Away." Hissed Mind, as light poured into his room. Soul shut the door behind him and walked towards the bed, sitting at the end of it.

"You and I both know Heart won't let me do that." He placed his hand on Mind's shoulder and gently shook him. "Sit up."

Mind grumbled and slowly sat up, wanting nothing more than to be left alone so he could sleep and finally rid himself of whatever kind of illness plagued him. Soul handed him the glass of water and he took it in his shaky hands, slowly drinking it.

"What's wrong?"

"Headache." He got up to try and place the now empty glass onto his desk, but with one step forward he lost his balance, collapsing to the floor. Soul quickly rushed to help him up. His concern growing worse.

"I think its something more than that. HEART! Get the pain killers!" Mind groaned and grabbed his temples. Souls shout just cemented in the fact he wanted to be left alone. He was helped to his feet and guided back to his bed. A few minutes later Heart came running in carrying various pill bottles.

"I didn't know which one was the right one!" He dropped the bottles on the floor for Soul to look through. Soul picked up a bottle of ibuprofen, opened it up pouring two out into his hand.

"Take this." Soul handed the medicine to Mind.

"Absolutely not." Mind pushed Soul away. "I told you to go away."

"Mind! Let us help you for once you egotistical ass!" Heart yelled, another piercing stab to Mind's headache. He grabbed the medicine from Soul and swallowed it, glaring at Heart the entire time. Not like he could tell.

"There. Happy?" He rolled over in this bed, facing the wall rather than the other two. "Now please. Go away."

That's what further supported the idea that something was wrong. Really wrong. Mind rarely said 'please', especially to the other two. Heart sat down next to him, giving him a look of worry.

"I'm not going anywhere." His voice now a whisper. He helped Mind sit up and pulled him into a hug. Usually Mind would fight back, but he couldn't find the strength to do so. He just laid there against Heart as he continued to whisper to him. "You're not feeling well. I wont just let you be."

"Heart, I don't think you should-" Soul was interrupted by quiet grumbles from Mind. He just sighed. "Keep an eye on him." He quietly left the room, leaving the two alone in the dark.

The two just sat there in silence. Heart carefully leaned back so mind could lay on top of him. Much to his dismay, Mind was comfortable. He didn't like Heart caring for him, but he was in too much pain to actually care about that. He allowed himself to relax for once. And eventually the two fell asleep.
