Stay the night

Summary:

A continuation of Fast car. After picking up Ruby, they talk while he drives before they find somewhere to stay the night. Written for 9 days of Lancaster.

Notes:

And now for the penultimate 9 days of Lancaster 2023 chapter. This chapter is a continuation of fast car and I hope that everyone enjoys it. I’m thinking I’m gonna save the other prompts and submissions that I didn’t do and use them to pad out a knights Rose over time. But for now, and this week really enjoy day 8 and day 9 once it’s posted because once their done, I’m gonna take a small break from writing. Not for too long.

Work Text:

"So, you're really in med school? That's really cool I would never be smart enough to get into something like that?” Jaune asked his new friend as his hands stayed on the wheel of his car his feet pushing accelerate to keep a steady speed.

“Really, it’s nothing special I’m just in school anyway it’s reading textbooks and doing tests it’s not helping people like what you do. How did you get into it anyway?” Ruby a person he had learned through talking the car ride was currently in med school training to be a doctor. She didn’t seem to like it however.

“Sea rescue? Oh, I used to be a lifeguard in my teens when I ended up applying the job when I was nineteen and they seemed to like what I sent them so they hired me. “What is it that you don’t like? Do you not want to be a doctor anymore?” He asked her driving slower than the speed he was driving at a couple hours ago for a good reason. He was tired.

She had warmed up at least, although she hadn’t taken off his hoodie yet. Not that he was complaining. The rain had stopped not that they were bothered much by the rain in the car, but at least things looked nicer outside.

She was kind enough to treat him to dinner, or well lunch depending on if they were done eating for the day or not. It was just highway food, but it was the kind of food that you’d want on a drive. Jaune had got a double Bacon cheeseburger while Ruby got this spicy chicken burger.

And no matter how much he argued Ruby wouldn’t relent. She would pay for them both to thank him.

When it was time that he needed caffeine to keep himself from falling asleep he got himself and Ruby a mochaccino each as well as a doughnut. And it didn’t matter to him that he didn’t need to, he wanted to.

“I do still want to become a doctor.” She told him before she paused biting down on her lower lip. “My mom she passed when I was pretty young.” she admitted to him making him frown his hand closest to her letting go off the steering wheel to gently take her hand in his.

“I’m sorry” he told her softly giving her hand a gentle squeeze before he returned his hand to the wheel.

“It’s okay.” She answered back with a smile “I just remember how nice, and helpful the doctors and nurses she had were. So, I wanted to be like them. And I want to help people but I haven’t been able to help anyone yet. It just sucks.” She said with a groan resting her head against the window while she looked outside.

“So, you feel like you're not doing enough? And you want to do more?” Jaune asked making her nod.

“Exactly that.”

What jaune was about to say was interrupted by a yawn that left his lips making her turn to fae him.

“You know it’s gotten pretty late, maybe we should find a hotel to spend the night or something.” She suggested making him nod quickly. It would be dangerous if he kept driving.

“I was about to suggest something similar.” Jaune agreed with a yawn. “We can get back on the road in the morning.” He told her with a soft smile.

They were pretty lucky when they found out where they were both going, they weren’t going to the same place but it turned out that where Ruby was going was on the way to the wedding he was going to. Only about an hour away.

They weren’t in a rush neither of them was and being able to talk to her while he drove managed to fix his boredom issue as well as keeping him more awake.

So really picking her up was far from the inconvenience that she seemed to think it was. He continued to drive until he spotted signs for a bed and breakfast called the Meadow inn. There was only one problem.

The sign said that there was only one bedroom left.

“Should we go somewhere else?” Jaune asked her as he pulled up into the lane slowly stopping the car as he waited for her answer.

Yawning Ruby looked away from him to hide her slightly flushed face before she shook her head. “We don’t know how far the next place is, and they could be all filled up.” She told him before she turned her head to face him.” We may just be strangers but I trust you Jaune.” She spoke with a soft smile only a small flush on her face.

Meeting her smile with one of his own his light blush matched hers before he nodded driving up and following the signs that lead them to a mid-size villa that looked pretty nice.

“It looks like we’ll be able to get breakfast but I’ve got some junk food in the boot if you're hungry.” Jaune told her with a soft smile.

“It’s okay I’m just tired.” She told him before she froze. “I forgot to bring spare clothes.” She said sighing. She had told him that she didn’t think things through enough during the ride, that she just wanted to get home for the next couple days. Something she couldn’t miss

“it’s okay I packed a couple spares. They're just going to be pretty baggy I didn’t know I would be picking up someone shorter than five feet.” He teased making her pout silver eyes playfully glaring at him.

“Hey I’m five foot four you tree.” She argued as they got out of the car and Ruby quickly followed Jaune into the hotel.

“What was that? I didn’t hear you down there.”

“I hope you hit your head going inside.”
