Chapter Text

Surge smirked wandering the streets of the city. She had knocked out the entire electrical grid and now the blue blurs fans were shrouded in darkness. So what if the Restoration already arrived to try and get the lights back on? By the time they realized who was behind this, she’d be ambushing Sonic.

“Is someone there?” A voice in the darkness asked. Surge blinked. Who was dumb enough to be out here at this time? Between the shorted-out lights and the cloudy night, it was practically impossible to see. “Come on let’s get you inside.” The voice approached, and after fumbling grabbed Surge’s arm.

“Let go!” Surge shouted, caught off guard.

“Relax, I’m here to help.” The voice was soft and calming.

“I don’t need help!”

“Everyone needs help once and a while.” Surge was tempted to shock the annoying goody-two-shoes. “Come on, it won’t do us any good to sit out in the open.”

“Ames? You there?” Surge could overhear the stranger's communicator.

Ames? She was certain she could almost place that annoying voice.

“Yeah, just getting a civilian to safety.”

“Ok, just watch out. We don’t know if Surge is still poking around.”

“I’ll be fine. I’m just getting one last civilian to safety-”

“ Amy. ” The voice sounded stern and disapproving. “ You can’t take her in a fight, and she’s not gonna go easy on you. She nearly killed me!”

The only person who I've almost killed is… The thought clicked, as well as who this annoying busybody was. Sonic the Hedgehog and his number 1 fan Amy Rose.

“So has Shadow… And Knuckles… and-”

“ Amy, please .”

He seems awfully worried about little Miss. Helpful here… Surge smirked. She’d be mighty helpful as bait to the bastard's death. The tenrec grabbed Amy.

“Hey!” Amy was caught off guard. Surge took the opportunity to grab the earpiece Amy was wearing.

“Don’t worry, I think I’ll be leaving soon,” Surge said into it. “And I think I’ll take your little friend here with me.” Before Amy could process the words, Surge grabbed her and ran, leaving electricity in her wake.

“ Amy!” Sonic’s voice sounded panicked. It just drove Surge on further.

“Good luck finding us!” She ripped the earpiece from the hedgehog's pink quills and let it smash under her fast feet.

“Let go! Let go of me!” Amy started struggling the moment she realized what was happening. “I am not doing this again! I’ve come too far!” That was when Surge got an elbow to the nose.

Amy skidded across the forest floor as Surge dropped her and screeched to a stop. The hedgehog quickly got her bearings back, summoning her hammer, and getting into a fighting stance. She prayed the moon would peak from the clouds so she had a better chance at holding her own until she had backup.

“Oh, you are dead !” Surge turned, electricity starting to set fire to the trees. That light was all Amy needed. She charged at Surge and hit her with all her might. The green tenrec ended up downing a tree.

Surge’s punches were met with Amy’s hammer. The hedgehog knew the second she was touched this was going to be over. The second she became paralyzed she’d never see Cream or Tails, or Knuckles, or Sonic ever again. The second she stopped fighting, with or without meaning to, she was as good as dead. But she eventually was out-sped. Surge only got the only good punch she needed in and Amy collapsed as the electricity jolted through her.

The bruises coating her knuckles from Amy’s blocks… Annoying heart-shaped impacts from her hammer on Surge’s stomach. The splitters from the tree in her back… The fire blazing the forest tree’s around her.

Maybe it was the exhaustion from just trying to hit the surprisingly capable hedgehog. Maybe it was the way the fire lit up her pink quills, or how Surge’s occasional lightning made her emerald green eyes glow. Maybe it was the heat of the fire making her cheeks warm.

But in that moment Surge stopped all thoughts of harming one Amy Rose… Further… In an attempt to emotionally distress Sonic.

Her foot nudged the unconscious hedgehog to face her.

She sure is pretty… When she’s not trying to bash your face in with a hammer… Surge shrugged. And pretty hot when she is…

“Amy!?” Sonic’s rushed voice entered the forest. “Ames?!”

Surge wanted to grab the girl in question and run, but as soon she woke up, Amy was sure to try and give the tenrec another fight and lead Sonic right to her and Kit’s base.

Eh. I’ve still got time… Blue skid marks not dating her. Surge smirked, bolting off, just far enough to make sure Amy was saved without being noticed.

Sure enough Sonic quickly put out the fires as the moon finally peaked out from the curtains.

“Ames? Amy?! Come on, wake up!” The hedgehog nudged the other’s body. She groaned to life. “Ames! Are you okay?”
“What happened?” Sonic helped her sit up.

“What happened?! I was telling you to get inside and you got snatched by Surge!”

Why is he so uppity? Not like he’s her boyfriend. Surge rolled her eyes.

“You should’ve gone inside after that last group!”

“You know I couldn’t.”

“I know, I know.” Sonic sounded defeated. “Your heart’s too big for that… Just try to take better care of yourself, Ames.”

“I’m still alive, aren’t I?” Amy teased.

“Keep it up and I’ll convince Jewel to make you help her with paperwork.” That earned him a playful hit.

“You jerk!”
“And here I thought I was your one and only hero.”

“Speaking of hero… Imma need you to carry me back.” Amy nervously announced. “I still have no feeling in my legs.”

“Just like the old days!” Sonic scooped her up laughing.

----

Surge felt like a fucking stalker, but she couldn’t help it. There was something about Amy that made Surge want to interact with her. So when she could, she’d watch until the pink hedgehog was alone… Usually to start a fight.

“Oi! Rosie!” Surge shouted. She hadn’t planned on visiting her favorite hedgehog today, but she happened to spot her walking through the forest the tenrec was training in. Amy was carrying a basket with her.

“Can you not for one day ?” Amy sighed with annoyance. “I’m trying to pick berries.” Surge’s fighting stance faltered.

“Eh?”
“I’m making pie, and wanted fresh berries.” The hedgehog explained. “Surely you have hobbies other than picking fights.”

“Course I do… I train to kill that stupid hero of yours.”

“I pity you, Surge.” Amy started marching off in the opposite direction.

“Hey! Come back here!” Surge trailed after her. “You don’t get to talk shit and just walk away.”

“I wasn’t talking shit.” She turned back to the tenrec. “I truly pity you. You have no memory of who you used to be, and you only live to fight and kill. I’m almost certain if you somehow did kill Sonic, you wouldn’t know what to do with yourself after that.”

“I’d take his place.”
“So you’d do exactly what Starline planned.” Amy knelt to a bush and began to pick berries. “Are you going to imitate his hobbies too?”

“He doesn’t have hobbies.” Surge spat.

“Sonic’s an avid reader and stargazer,” Amy admitted. “Meanwhile, I like to bake.” She turned to Surge. “If you help me pick berries you can join me.” She stared at Amy for a few a minute. The hedgehog held the basket out to her. “We can pick berries or you can try to fight me and I’ll just go to the store and buy some. I’ll even bake you a pie to take home.”

Surge roughly grabbed the basket, her fingers brushing Amy’s in the process.

A fight wouldn’t be any fun if she didn’t fight back. Surge reasoned to herself.

----

That’s how Surge ended up in Amy’s kitchen watching the owner meticulously making a pattern with dough on the pie.

“Just put it in the oven, it’s going to taste the same no matter how it looks.” Surge urged.

“Making it pretty is part of the fun.” Amy stuck her tongue out. “Not that you know anything about that.”

“Keep it up, Rosie, I’ll put that tongue of yours back where it belongs.” A mostly empty threat. Once the pies were in the oven Amy grabbed the basket and started packing it with different items. Surge watched in quiet confusion. Quilts, knitted and crochet items, some bagged homemade cookies, a couple of books, some homemade soaps.

“What are you doing?”

“Making a care basket,” Amy explained. “For you and Kit.”

“We don’t need it.”

“Let’s pretend you’re doing perfectly fine.”

“Fuck you.”

“Kit’s a kid ,” Amy stressed. “I’m not going to send you back to wherever you go when you're not fighting my friends, knowing you probably don’t have a lot.”

“Fine, I'll take it for Drippy.” Surge relented.

The timer for the pies went off.

“We got to wait for them to cool,” Amy instructed. “Then I’ll wrap yours up for you.”

----

Kit never questioned where the care packages came from. Occasionally Surge would leave and return with one and something freshly baked. He had a vague idea, especially when the tenrec stopped him from attacking Amy one fight.

So he knew exactly who to go to when Surge got hurt. He nearly broke Amy’s door down and didn’t care she had Restoration members over for dinner at the time.

“Miss Rose!” Kit grabbed the skirt of her dress. “Surge is hurt! I don’t know what to do! The roof caved in and… And…”

Amy didn’t need to be told twice. She grabbed the fennecs hand and started running.
