Work Text:
You had already made a name for yourself when Yunho arrived. Your classmates knew you as someone always bright and helpful, ready to stand a hand to everyone in need. Everybody knew that, if required, there you went, with a smile on your face and a desire to participate. And made the most absolute sense for you to be the president of the welcoming club.
However, he was not like that. At least, not at first.
What you could read from him at your first touch was a shy boy having to learn all again how things worked. You knew deep inside he required more than someone to show him where his locker was. He required a friend.
And something on you felt so willing to become his friend.
Afterward, he ended up warming a little. Especially with you. He was showing himself as the most loyal of your many friends, almost as he could feel before something bad happens, so he would be the first one to help you out with the situation.
However, for you, it was always fair trade. After all, you did the same thing.
Until that schoolwork.
As always, you and Yunho paired for that research. For the sociology class, your teacher asked the pairs to write what kind of love myth called your attention the most, so you could all discuss it in class. And Destiny, wicked and tricky as it is, made its way to turn the simple into the most intricate.
Yunho's instinct was to snap his head to you after something in his guts poke him to it, and he could see your eyes wide. He was too far from your desk to see what exactly you were reading, but he was sure it was one of those Wikipedia pages by the glimpses of the layout.
“What's wrong?” he asked, feeling something – on his heart now – itch when you did not move your head in his direction, widening even more at the screen.
Just as if he had someone else controlling his body and mind, he got up from his place on the floor, heading to behind you and levering up his face, so he could read clearly what the article was about. In the same enchanted way, you rolled the page up, unable to not follow the words one by one once again now knowing in your guts that he was also getting the same shock you had.
The article was about one specific soulmate, bonded by this internal and mutual feeling the souls share. Ones connected by this bond would always know when their soulmate is in danger or having a bad moment and not only, but would also share the same happiness. In some cases, they could even order each other around only by the wishes of their heart.
And this felt weirdly familiar.
Both of you stood immobile for what seemed like ages, unable to even blink with the same movie of moments passing through your minds. It all seemed to prove the article’s point, but was it possible? Or even, was Yunho as doubtful as you were?
“Are you-”
“Unsure of this, but afraid that everything that we lived was only proving the article was right? Yes.” he answered even before you could finish questioning him, and the whole situation seemed to get even more confused.
In moments like that, you always searched for his eyes. They always had on them exactly the unspeakable words you needed to hear, but when you looked at him, you saw the same need for comfort, just as if he was reflecting you. Or maybe you were reflecting him.
Everything was so hard to know.
“It makes sense…” he whispered, and only now you realized he was extremely close to you.
“I know. But I never thought that soulmates were a thing.” you answered in the same tone, and he hummed.
Reading that only made it hard for you to understand the situation. You could not think of a way of proving if it was right or wrong, and maybe that was because you did not know which way you wanted that to go. It would be amazing to have a man like Yunho by your side, but soulmate? These things are for life, aren't they?
“Yes.” he said, and you thought it was unexpected until the memories hit you like a train. He was answering a question you only thought of, but which one of them?
“Yes, do you think what I think or yes, soulmates are for life?” you spoke out loud, maybe in an attempt of assuring this wasn't a kind of collective delirium and a way of asserting what was a fact from what was just expectations.
“Both.” was all he said, and your mind could not think about anything except the urge of kissing him, even if seconds ago you were drowning in your limbo. However, if the link goes both ways, this means this desire comes from him?
Well, did not matter, because before you could even drag yourself to create a thought line, his lips were into yours, melting to fill in your shape. Just like magic, all the answers seemed to come and there was no way you could hide from the feeling of being with him. So you let yourself go, sneaking your hands into his hair while he did the same, pulling you to stand up and into his arms.
It felt like you were both one, like your souls once belonged to someone else and were divided, finally having the opportunity to stay together again. It felt like that is how you were supposed to be but not only this, mostly; felt like it all made sense. And the best part is that you knew he felt the same way.
“If soulmates aren't a thing,” he spoke up after breaking the kiss, still a little out of air. “I hope we can start making it a thing.”
“It is a thing,” you said, peeking at his lips. Your hands were still caressing his scalp, “It's our thing, Yunho.”
