Work Text:
Thomas and Guy had been together for three years already when Guy finally had enough time off for a proper vacation and not a working holiday. So he intended to make the best of this and rented a remote cottage in the South of France for a month.
The cottage they rented was situated on a hillside overlooking the beautiful blue sea. Next to it was a large field of lavender. Every morning, they'd wake to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore and the smell of lavender in full bloom.
They spent their days exploring the cobbled streets of nearby villages, tasting local delicacies at the markets, and swimming in the warm water of the Mediterranean. In the evenings, they'd watch the sunset, sitting next to each other in the golden sand, sipping French wine and talking about anything and everything that came to mind.
Guy had brought his camera that he had recently purchased and loved capturing as much as possible on film. The landscape itself looked photogenic and almost called to be captured, but Thomas quickly realised that it wasn’t their surroundings that Guy was interested in capturing. Most of the time, the camera was aimed at him.
As they walked along the beach one evening, Thomas noticed a beautiful spot right by the water, so they went there to take a picture. Thomas stood behind Guy and put his arms around him as he held the camera and snapped the picture. First one of the sea but then he turned the camera around and took a picture of the two of them. Guy then turned around and kissed Thomas, feeling a deep warmth inside. Not in itself something new because that feeling had been there ever since that first kiss three years ago. But something was special today. Maybe it was the place, maybe the sense of utter relaxation or maybe it was seeing Thomas so happy and carefree. Even Hollywood didn’t allow them the freedom that this secluded little place did. Whatever it was, Guy felt like he was falling in love all over again.
Guy had never really thought about it before but suddenly he felt like it was right. He put the camera down on a little rock before taking Thomas hands into his.
“Will you marry me?” he asked. Thomas was shocked. Marriage wasn‘t something he had ever seen as a possibility for himself. But when he looked into Guy‘s sparkling eyes and thought a little more about what his partner wanted to achieve with the question, he knew what his answer would be.
“Yes,” he finally managed to say, “yes, I will.”
The two of them stood there, their hands tightly entwined, facing out towards the sea as the sun sets and the stars come out. They knew that their commitment is not legally binding or recognised by anyone but themselves, but they didn’t need that. This was so much more meaningful to them. Just the two of them, their love for each other expressed in words, promises sealed with kisses and only the moon, the stars and the ocean breeze as their witnesses.
