Work Text:
The ship was quiet the night it happened. The night the world held its breath, and, in turn, you let out a sigh.
Landed on some small green planet, all the machinery was switched off. The soft sound of birdsong melted through the razor crest’s dark metal walls.
Some time in the past, you can’t remember when, Din allowed you to join him in bed. Sleeping was easier when you had each other to hold on to. Fewer nightmares made it easier to work the next day. That was only the excuse.
The lights switched off, he would remove his helmet, allowing you the privilege of being in his unmasked presence. The first time it happened he didn’t say anything, just took it off without warning. You didn’t even notice until he laid beside you, and his breath padded against your neck.
His voice without the helmet still gave you butterflies each time it rang in your ears. Soft and deep like a bed of endless blankets and pillows. You dreamt of his voice calling your name in more ways than one.
This night, you were laying in his arms, half asleep, but still conscious. His un-gloved hands were gently carding through your hair and sending careful fingertips over your face. He wanted to trace over every detail of you. How your skin felt, the shape of your nose, the height and depth of your cheeks. The outline of your lips and its soft plush skin.
You assumed he thought you were asleep by now, since Din would never be this intimate normally. But you reveled in his touch. You felt his finger follow the edge of your cupid’s bow when he finally spoke:
“I love you.”
Three little words. So small, so quiet. Yet utterly and completely world shattering. You felt as though the universe had stopped, just to listen in, and watch this moment. Like you were stars in a film that everyone bought tickets to see.
You opened your eyes, straining to see anything of him, but failing in the darkness. Your heart pounded as if you’d gone blind, and you resisted the urges to claw at your eyelids. This was not enough. You needed more. You needed him.
“I love you too.” You whispered back.
His entire body went tense. His hands idled on your cheeks.
“I- I didn’t know- You’re awake?” He stumbled over his words like a baby giraffe. He seemed to trip up like this more and more in the proceeding days.
“I love you.” You repeated, more intense this time. As if you were trying to say more than simply what the words meant. That they were just some silly little words that could never truly express what he meant to you. That this feeling was the universe. Every growing, every changing, unstoppable, indescribable heart bursting starlight that exploded every time he moved. Din got the message this time.
“Really?” His thumbs brushed under your eyes.
“Desperately, I love you, more than I can possibly say.”
Din knew of nothing else then, but to kiss you. And he did. And it felt better than anything you’d ever done in your life. Now, after years of following him, he was here, kissing you. All the time you’d spent together. Every mission, every argument, every second. It snapped into place. And you knew it was all worth it. And the world stopped, holding its breath.
And then it whispered: I love you too
