Miss me

Work Text:

“Miss me,” she seemed to whisper. “Tell me, one last time, did you love me?”

The forest was wider than any field and easily twice as deep. Many travelers have gotten lost or came back out in pieces. Warning signs had since been stationed every few yards around the perimeter and yet, every so often a person entered.

Always with intent, always with feeling. They never leave the same.

“Miss me,” she whispered. “Please, was I important to you?”

She wasn’t the type to tell where she was headed. Some of her friends knew—of course, some of her friends knew. She wasn’t secretive. Read as clear as a book on astrophysics.

Always with intent, sometimes with feeling. They’re never the same.

“Miss me,” she said. “Tell me, did I do it right?”

Like any major ecosystem, a river runs through the forest; right down the middle. Waving and winding its way through trees and grasses. A rather dangerous river—built for speed if not for the rocks.

Always with intent, never with feeling. They don’t look how they used to.

“Miss me!” she yelled. “Miss me, please, tell me I was better than I thought!”

Every so often, the river would push a body out into the connected cove. Some days it’s a deer, some days it’s a fawn. More fawns had washed up recently.

Sometimes with intent, overloaded with feelings. They’re being reclaimed by nature.

“Miss me,” she cried.

“Miss me,” they said.

“Love me,” he whispered.

Another body on the shore.
