Work Text:
mountains of Miyagi, cherish his smile. his laugh
tosses in the wind racing down your winding slopes
crisscrossing towers of your cedar trees.
summer leaves, did you thread through his fiery hair
or shade away the sunlight that would’ve burnt his nose?
little boy, glitter in your eyes, hot and sparkly
like the tears you once let fall.
pick the pebbles from your tires,
bend a little lower towards the bars
and brace yourself against the bitter
wind. winter will come, your breath
will come in mist. mistake not your sweat
for the mountain spirits. instead,
little boy, down the mountain path
you will find in the cry of midnight’s bird
your call to a second home.
Notes:
As of writing this, I've been engaging in more Haikyu content than usual. I've been rewatching season 1, and the new Haikyu Engeki had just been announced. Inspired by all this, I wanted to write and publish a poem that encapsulates how much I love the orange ball of sunshine that is Shouyou Hinata. I've always been enchanted by the mountains of Miyagi ever since I did research on it for an unpublished fanfic, and the trip Hinata makes home has always struck me as a brutal one, especially during the Ball Boy arc. I also recently bought the Haikyu illustration book, the cover of which is him on this exact journey in winter, and I love it to bits.
