Creepin' in the Night

Summary:

The figure was standing hunched in on itself, it's body covered with some type of cloth up over its head, and several rats peaked up on its back. Its head turned to face Camilo, eyes flashing a glowing green for a moment.

"Oh, Tío Bruno, it's only you," Camilo said. "You scared me before I saw the rats and glowing eyes."

When Camilo goes to sneak some food he isn't expecting anyone else to be awake at this time of night. But when he meets someone in the kitchen, it doesn't surprise him when he finds out who it is.

Work Text:

Camilo silently made his way down the stairs to the kitchen, the moon shining some light onto the courtyard along with countless stars in the night sky.

He had gotten distracted at dinner that night and before he knew it, everyone was already done and started cleaning up. And he had only got to eat one serving.

After going up to his room and getting in bed, he wasn't been planning on letting himself eat a late night snack (or meal) even though he was hungry. He was trying to wait until morning.

It wasn't until his hunger started hurting in a way he grew too uncomfortable with that he threw the sheets off of himself and gave in.

It was late enough for everyone to be asleep, so he shouldn't get caught. Although he was sure they would understand if he explained, but he still was sneaky for nothing but the fun of it.

Camilo has it all planned, and he will let himself full on pig out tonight alone in the kitchen where there's no one to judge him.

Camilo was getting ready to sneak into the kitchen, his mouth already watering like an animal at only the thought of food as he wondered why he would even try keeping it from himself. But then he saw there was already someone else in the kitchen.

Camilo's eyes widened and he stumbled a few steps back, a stangled scream coming out in an embarrassing squeak as he raised his hand to cover his mouth.

Bruno moved the blanket down from over his head, revealing his face more. "Ha ha, very funny, sobrino," he spoke in a mocking voice.

Camilo now came up to Bruno, getting up close and leaning over him to be nosy about what he was doing. "What? Those are some of the things I associate you with. And I don't think you're creepy anymore. Now I think those things are cool."

Bruno continued what he was doing with Camilo looking over his shoulder, although his movements were slower and careful with someone watching.

"Why are you awake?" Camilo asked, Bruno jerking back at how loud it sounded right next to his ear.

Bruno turned to look at Camilo, eyes a little wide as he blinked, then looked back to the food he was getting, then back at Camilo.

"I could ask you the same thing," he said.

"I asked you first!" Camilo was quick to say.

Bruno looked at him for a moment, not saying anything, then he went back to what he was doing. "And I'm the adult that can do whatever I want. You're the kid that should be in bed."

Bruno flinched when Camilo plopped his head right on his shoulder, and he glanced over at his nephew, slowly looking back down.

"Do you ever sleep?" Camilo asked, and this time Bruno didn't jerk from how close his voice was.

"Yes, I do. I just couldn't sleep tonight," Bruno froze when he realized he answered the question before Camilo did. "Okay, now are you going to tell me why you are up?"

"Um," Camilo sounded a little unsure, and he moved back away from Bruno. "Same reason, I guess?"

Bruno glanced back at Camilo now that he had retreated away from him, and he asked, "Did you come to get a snack?"

"No," Camilo instantly replied, but then he realized how stupid it sounded when he had come to the kitchen. "I mean uh- yeah. I did." He was ashamed about it, especially with how he planned on getting way more than just a snack, and he turned his head down.

"It's fine. I'm not going to get mad at you for it or anything. Go ahead, don't mind me," Bruno chuckled a little, "Remember, sobrino, I think more about what people think of me than to try and think anything of them."

Camilo rubbed his eyes, yawning as he spoke, "I'm- I'm kind of hungry, Tío."

Bruno looked at Camilo with a smile, grabbing some of the food he was getting to hand out to him. "Here, do you want some of this?"

"Sí, gracias," Camilo said as he took it, waiting only until Bruno turned back to start eating it.

"Mijo, you should try to get some sleep after you're done in here."

"I will. I think I'll be able to sleep after this."

Bruno was almost done with the food he was getting when he felt something against his leg, and Camilo didn't know someone else had come until he heard the small voice speak.

"You were taking too long, so I left to see what you're doing."

Camilo's eyes widened and he looked down to see Antonio gripping onto Bruno's shirt with one of his little hands. Camilo looked back up to his tío questioningly.

Bruno looked to Antonio then back up to Camilo, mouth opening as he wasn't sure what he should say. "Um."

Antonio looked at his big brother who he just now realized was in the kitchen, then at his tío that wasn't saying anything for some reason when it was obvious that Camilo was confused, and so he spoke for him. "Tío Bruno let me stay with him tonight and we both can't sleep so we're having fun and getting midnight snacks together!" he finished his statement off with a big smile.

Camilo looked down at his smiling little brother, wondering if by 'they both can't sleep' meant 'Bruno doesn't sleep so I thought it would be fun to try because he's a cool tío'. Camilo looked back to Bruno.

"Wait... he's sleeping in your room?" Camilo asked.

Bruno still stayed silent, and so Antonio thought it would be a good idea to keep talking. "The rats told me about one night when you had a nightmare and went to Tío Bruno's room."

Bruno's hand absently laid on Antonio's head as he let the kid speak for him, and Antonio looked up at his tío as he stroked his hand over his tight curls.

"Oh, and how scared you were so he let you sleep with with him," he finished, looking back at his brother. Camilo grumbled something about there not being any privacy in this family. Antonio hugged himself to Bruno, finishing speaking, "So I thought if you could do it, then if I ever want to sleep with someone I can go to Tío Bruno, and it worked!"

Camilo crossed his arms, looking at how Antonio was smiling against Bruno for a moment before he looked back up to Bruno. "So he can stay up late and I can't?"

Notes:

3/14/24
So the reason I'm gonna add a note several months later is because I was asked if my fic could be translated, and after thinking about it some more I decided I had more to say than what I initially said in my reply to the comment, and decided to just add that in this note here
1) so after some thinking, I decided I *would be open to having my fics translated, as long as the proper credit is given to me, but 2) this was the first time I was asked that, so at first I was indecisive about it 3) I didn't recall hearing of the ficbook site, so I did a bit of research and checked it out. I didn't really care that much when I saw the translation already there, since they had reached out to me to ask my permission first and I knew about it, and I was given the proper credit. In the notes it did say it would be taken down if I declined permission, so I was *mostly fine with it so far. But then I saw the 'slash' with Bruno and Camilo, and in the notes it said they thought it was implied in my fic. So I was sort of taken aback at this, and was definitely NOT okay with my writing being portayed in a way I would never want it to. 4) at this point I just wanted to hurry and think of how to word my response, and I DEFINITELY want this translation taken down.

In conclusion: with permission I might be okay with my fics being translated, but I am NOT okay with it being portayed in a way I didn't mean it to, especially in this way, so I am upset about this situation.
