How bad can it be?

Summary:

Jamie reflects on the pros and cons of catching a burglar in the act.

Notes:

Hi! It's Jamie day and then I remembered I had written this so I decided to post it. It's my first time posting a fanfiction in 5 years so I'm a little rusty, sorry for any mistakes that may have made their way in there! Happy birthday to Jamie, and happy reading to you guys!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Jamie sighs as he makes his way up to the doorstep of his apartment building.

As he makes his way up the stairs, he can't help but letting his thoughts wander. Work had been exhausting and frustrating. Jones, as always, had found nothing better to do than harass his employees about their efficiency all day, leaving him with a bad mood. To make things worse, when he walked out of the office building, rain greeted him, and accompanied him throughout his commute back home. All he wanted was to curl up with on the couch with Bomi, eat some delivery and spend the evening binging the show he just started.

When he finally reaches the door of his apartment, he can't wait to do just that. He reaches for his keys, but is stopped dead in his tracks when he hears a noise from inside his apartment. He looks at himself, hand still reaching for his keys, and then looks back to his front door. He frowns when another sound is heard through the door. Bomi is way too lazy of a cat to knock stuff over, so it's definitely not her, and he is still standing outside of his apartment. Has the exhaustion finally made him go delusional?

He sighs and rubs his forehead. He can't believe it. Out of all days, of course a burglar decides that this is the day Jamie should be brutally murdered for catching him in the act. Of course that's his luck. He wonders if he should call the police, but quickly disregards the idea. He just wants to go sleep, to forget about this horrible day. He snorts as he finally grabs his key and turns the lock. It's not like he's got anything worthy of stealing anyways, the burglar will probably just escape using the fire escape.

Past the point of caring, he enters his apartment. It's eerily quiet, so much so that Jamie starts to wonder if he was hallucinating it all. Then Jamie notices movement in the corner of his eye, and when he looks up he comes to stand eye in eye with

"Jay?"

"Hi, you're back early." Jay says. He's standing in front of the stove, kitchen knife in hand, looking like a deer caught in headlights. He's standing unnaturally broadly, his big frame covering whatever the hell it is he's trying to hide behind it. Jamie tilts his head in confusion.

“I’m not? It’s 7 PM like usual love.” He says. “What are you doing here? Didn’t you have work?”

Jay mutters a quiet oh, and pouts. “I guess I lost track of time then.”

Jamie melts a little at seeing his adorable boyfriend pouting like that. He still doesn’t understand how he got so lucky. He walks up to Jay and wraps his arms around him, burying his face into Jay’s chest. Instantly, he feels the tension drain away from his body, and he blissfully sighs. He smiles when he feels Jay hugging him back , not caring about the fact that Jamie is still completely soaked. The kiss Jay leaves on his hair is sweet, and the butterflies in his stomach go wild.

“Rough day?” He asks, but they both know he doesn’t really have to, and he’s not surprised when Jamie nods, still hiding in his chest.

“Fucking Jones… and then the rain… and then the burglar.” Jamie says, too tired to form proper sentences. He doesn’t notice the blush making its way to Jay’s cheeks.
“You’re home now love, you can relax.” Jay says, the movements on Jamie’s lower back soothing. “I made dinner.”

When Jamie lifts his head, his smirk growing, Jay knows his boyfriend has caught on.

“Please tell me this isn’t one of those cliché scenario’s where you try to surprise me with dinner, but I get home too early and now your steak is burning?” He asks, already knowing the answer. Jay’s face turns very red, and Jamie actually can’t believe how sweet his boyfriend is.

“Just be happy it wasn’t a burglar.” Jay says, still blushing furiously. Jamie yelps as Jay picks him up and starts tickling him.

“NO JAY STOP I CAN’T-“

Notes:

I took up an english credit this past school year and used the familiar characters for all the creative writing tasks lol. This task was 'write a story within 5 minutes with the words doorstep, butterfly and kitchen knife incorporated'.

A big thank you to the familiar discord for reminding me it's Jamie's bday in the first place!

Have a nice day everyone, don't forget to drink enough water <3
