Work Text:

I don’t know. Let’s just drive and find out.
20 years later...

“Hey Nick, remember that time when we drove around our hometown after you came out to your dad?” Charlie asked.
“Yeah! That was a lot of fun! Wanna do that again sometime?” Nick asked with a smile.
“Sure! That sounds like a lot of fun!” Charlie replied.
Charlie could barely contain how happy he was! Charlie was so happy because he was going to ask Nick what his response would be to being asked to marry Charlie on that car ride. It was going to be so romantic!

Later that day, on the car ride...
“Hey Nick, do you want to go get some hot chocolate?” Charlie asked.
“Sure! Where should we get the hot chocolate from?”
Charlie eventually built up the nerves to half-jokingly say, “From our future wedding venue.”

If Nick had been in the middle of drinking anything he would have choked on it from pure surprise. Nick and Charlie hadn't even talked about marriage yet! I mean Nick was obviously going to say yes, but this was so sudden! Shouldn’t there have been some sort of romantic build up first?!-
“Ok, probably shouldn’t have started the marriage conversation like that,” Charlie laughed awkwardly, “I do plan on proposing to you, I just want to know in advance what you would say if I asked to marry you in case you didn’t want to.” Charlie said even more awkwardly than before.
“So, this isn’t a proposal?” Nick asked, slightly confused.
“Not yet. I will propose officially when I know whether or not you’ll say yes.” Charlie explained.

There was an awkward silence between the two before Charlie asked the question that he probably should have started with.
“Nick, what would you say if I asked if you would marry me?” Charlie asked, hoping Nick would say yes if Charlie proposed.
“I would say yes, then probably start crying from happiness.” Nick answered, love seeping from his laughter.
“Then I would probably also start crying from happiness.” Charlie replied, wishing he could propose to Nick right now, but Charlie didn’t have the ring yet.
“Ok, actually where should we get the hot chocolate from?” Nick asked
“Monmouth Coffee sounds like a good choice to me!” Charlie replied, while mentally planning his proposal to Nick.

4 months later, on Charlie and Nicks anniversary...
“Are you exited for our anniversary photo-shoot Nick?” Charlie asked Nick excitedly.
“Absolutely! I can’t wait to see how the photos look when they're done being taken!”
Charlie smiled at Nick, knowing that Nicks day was going to get a whole lot better.

At the beach they got together at...
Nick was already in a good mood, but his mood got even better when he saw that it was going to be a winter themed photo-shoot. This was going to be the best day of his year, like always!

Charlie was on the verge of tears, not because he was sad, but because he was so happy and excited for his cue to pop the question. Charlie had been preparing this ever since Nick confirmed that he when asked to marry Charlie, would say yes. Charlie was determined to make this day the best day of both Nick and Charlies lives.
“Alright, this is the last picture! You can pose however you like for this one!” The photographer said, giving the cue for Charlie to get down on one knee.

“Why are you-?” Nick asked before being given the best surprise of his life.
“Nick,” Charlie said as he went to grab the engagement ring.
“I fell for you almost immediately after we met.”
Nick couldn’t believe what was happening.
“I have wanted to ask you this question for many years.”
Was Charlie actually going to...?
“Nick,” Charlie said as he held up the ring, while kneeling on one knee,
“Will you marry me?” Charlie said with the biggest grin of his life.
“YES, YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES!!!” Nick yelled with tears in his eyes.
This was the best day of Nicks life. He still couldn’t believe this was happening! Even as Charlie was putting the engagement ring on Nicks finger, today still felt like a wonderful dream. His whole life lead up to this moment, and it was all worth it, because it led up to today.

20 more years later...
“And that is how I proposed to my amazing husband Nick!” Charlie said to his daughter Elisa.
“That’s a wonderful story!” Elisa, said, while mentally planning Charlies birthday party.
