Work Text:

Mondays were a dreaded enemy for Beomgyu, representing the end of his cherished weekends and the start of a mundane week filled with boring lectures.

Who in their right mind could actually love Mondays?

For Beomgyu, the idea of studying was as appealing as watching paint dry. He found it difficult to muster any interest in the subjects taught in his classes. Waking up early to attend lectures felt like a cruel punishment, interrupting his precious sleep and cutting short his late-night gaming sessions.

Beomgyu had a zest for life that couldn't be contained within the confines of textbooks. He was determined to make the most of his high school experience and live a carefree existence. Late nights were reserved for thrilling gaming sessions, where he delved into virtual worlds and conquered every challenge with his nimble fingers and sharp reflexes. The real world, with its predictable routines and structured education, paled in comparison to the excitement he found in his gaming adventures.

Love, romance, and relationships were distant concepts for Beomgyu. He had little interest in exploring matters of the heart, believing them to be distractions from his pursuit of pure enjoyment. He was content with the thrill of competition in games and the camaraderie he shared with his friends.

It was Monday, and despite the fact that it was their second week as freshmen, all freshmen were summoned to a brief orientation. It's quite late to introduce us to the school grounds and faculty, why even bother? Beomgyu sighed. He despises these kinds of things, and to make matters worse, it's Monday. What a way to start the week.

As Beomgyu stood at the back of the gym, enduring the monotony of the school orientation, he couldn't help but feel the stifling heat and the weariness settle in. Bored out of his mind, he cast his eyes around the room in search of something, anything, to break the tedium.

And then he saw him.

Among the sea of students, his gaze locked onto a brown-haired boy with hair that cascaded in waves reminiscent of a golden retriever's fur. The boy stood out, not just for his unconventional choice of wearing an oversized black hoodie in the heat but also for his unwavering attention to the speaker on stage. The contrast between their behavior intrigued Beomgyu, drawing him in like a magnet.

Unable to resist his curiosity, Beomgyu found himself fixated on the boy. He squinted, attempting to catch a glimpse of the student's face hidden beneath the hoodie and tousled hair. Unabashedly staring, he couldn't help but wonder about the mystery that lay beneath that unruly hair.

Minutes ticked by, and as the speaker concluded their remarks, Beomgyu's spirits lifted. Finally, the tiresome orientation was coming to an end. Yet, his attention remained locked on the brown-haired boy, a desire to etch his image into his memory and make a mental note to approach him later.

As applause filled the room, Beomgyu clapped along, stealing one last glance at the stage. Disappointed that he hadn't caught a glimpse of the boy's face, he frowned but decided to give it one final shot. He just couldn't give up so easily.

In a moment of serendipity, the boy removed his hood, revealing his face to Beomgyu's eager eyes. Sunlight from the square windows bathed the scene, creating a dramatic spotlight that illuminated the boy's features. Beomgyu's breath caught in his throat, stunned by the captivating sight before him.

Underneath the tangle of disheveled brown hair, Beomgyu discovered a strikingly pale face that seemed to glow with a golden radiance. The effect was mesmerizing as if he were witnessing a scene from a beautifully scripted drama unfolding right in front of him. He was taken aback by the sheer beauty of this person he had stumbled upon.

Caught in the act of staring, Beomgyu's cheeks burned crimson as the boy returned his gaze with the sweetest smile he had ever seen. His heart fluttered, a peculiar sensation coursing through his chest in response to that radiant smile. Beomgyu questioned his sanity, wondering if it was the heat or something more profound causing this reaction. Regardless, he brushed it off, determined not to let such trivial concerns overshadow his intrigue.

Suddenly, one of his classmates shook him awake from his reverie, reminding him that they needed to return to their rooms. As Beomgyu's classmates began to disperse and leave the gymnasium, he reluctantly tore his gaze away from the brown-haired boy. A sense of urgency washed over him. He didn't want to let this opportunity slip away. Determined, he quickly made his way through the crowd, maneuvering his long legs with ease.

As he reached the exit, Beomgyu caught a glimpse of the boy disappearing into the hallway. He quickened his pace, weaving through students, and finally caught up with him just outside the gym.

"Hey!" Beomgyu called out, trying to catch his breath. The boy turned around, his curious eyes meeting Beomgyu's. "Sorry for kinda staring at you earlier. You really just caught my attention, and thought that maybe we could chat or something. I mean, if you're interested that is."

The boy, who Beomgyu now knew as Kai, laughed at that, and Beomgyu felt his worries swept away. Kai smiled warmly, his features lighting up. "Sure, I'd like that. I'm Kai."

"Beomgyu. Nice to meet you, Kai," he replied, a genuine excitement filling his voice.

They found a quiet corner in the hallway, away from the commotion, and settled against the lockers, their conversation flowing effortlessly. Beomgyu soon discovered that Kai had a passion for music too, a topic that fascinated Beomgyu as well. They exchanged stories, ideas, and even shared some of their favorite songs, immersing themselves in the world of music.

As the minutes ticked by, Beomgyu became more captivated by Kai's presence. He couldn't help but notice the way Kai's eyes gleamed with enthusiasm as he talked about his musical endeavors, and the genuine interest he showed in Beomgyu's own passions.

The initial awkwardness faded with each passing minute, replaced by a growing sense of camaraderie. Casually discussing how they're feeling as freshmen in a new environment as well.

Time seemed to have its own pace, as if the outside world had faded into the background. They lost track of how long they had been talking, engrossed in the slow and steady building of their friendship. Laughter filled the air as they exchanged jokes and humorous stories. It was a conversation that flowed effortlessly, like a dance between two individuals getting to know each other.

When the bell finally rang, signaling the end of the break, Beomgyu reluctantly glanced at the time. "We should head to our next class," he said, a tinge of reluctance in his voice.

Kai nodded, a wistful smile playing on his lips. "Yeah, you're right. But hey, let's continue this later. Maybe we can walk around the school together during lunch?"

Beomgyu's face lit up with excitement. "Absolutely! I'd love to."

With a promise to reconvene, they parted ways, their minds brimming with anticipation for what lay ahead.

For the rest of the day, Beomgyu felt a renewed sense of energy and purpose. The dullness that had enveloped him earlier had dissipated, replaced by the prospect of a budding friendship with Kai. He couldn't help but daydream about the adventures they would embark on and the memories they would create together.

As Beomgyu entered his next class, he couldn't resist stealing a glance at the empty seat beside him, imagining Kai's presence and the laughter that would fill the space. The school day seemed brighter, filled with endless possibilities and the promise of a friendship that would shape their high school journey and beyond.

From the moment they exchanged their first words, there was an instant connection between Beomgyu and Kai.

The initial exchange was filled with small talk, both of them testing the waters, hesitant yet curious, with simple questions and brief responses. Each word spoken seemed to carry a weight, as if they were carefully choosing what to talk about. But as they spent more time together, a sense of comfort settled in.

During lunch breaks, Beomgyu and Kai would seek each other out, their conversations flowing effortlessly. They discovered shared interests, funny anecdotes, and unexpected similarities that gradually peeled away the layers of hesitation.

Beomgyu's carefree life took a complete turn when he met Kai. Gone were the days of reckless abandon and procrastination. Instead, Beomgyu found himself fully immersed in a world of newfound discipline and dedication, guided by the influence of his studious friend.

Studying became a joint venture for Beomgyu and Kai. They would spend countless hours together, huddled over textbooks and notebooks, sharing knowledge and pushing each other to excel. The library became their sanctuary, a place where their ambitions and dreams intermingled with the scent of old books and the soft hum of whispered conversations.

"Hey, do you have a spare pen?" Beomgyu asks as soon as Kai gets back from returning the books he used, handing Beomgyu his extra pen.

They're currently inside the library, Beomgyu and Kai are finishing up some papers. It's quite packed, with students scattered around, diligently working on their assignments. The atmosphere is hushed, with only the sound of pens scratching on paper and the occasional soft whisper.

As Beomgyu starts writing, Kai leans in closer and speaks in a low voice, trying not to disturb others. "Remember that student who spoke during orientation?" he asks. Beomgyu nods, his curiosity piqued. "Yeah, what's up?"

"Lower your voice, dumbass. You don't want to get kicked out, do you?" Kai sighs. "Anyway, as I was saying, we kind of exchanged contacts yesterday."

"Oh, poor guy," he said under his breath, but Kai sure heard it. "Excuse me? You're quite lucky to have me as your friend, you just can't admit it." Kai scoffed while fixing his stuff.

Beomgyu smirks and retorts, "actually, I'm sick of you." Kai rolls his eyes and playfully demands, "Give me back my pen." Beomgyu chuckles and moves it away, saying, "I'm kidding, I'm kidding."

Kai adjusts his belongings, looking slightly impatient. "Hurry up and finish that already. I'm starving," he grumbles. Beomgyu glances at his half-completed paper and promises, "Will be done in a minute, you wait there."

Curiosity getting the best of him, Beomgyu can't help but ask, "By the way, who exactly did you exchange contacts with?" He wants to know more about this person who managed to capture Kai's attention.

"Oh, it was Yeonjun-hyung," Kai reveals, a glint of excitement in his eyes. Beomgyu's heart sinks for a moment, an unexpected pang of disappointment washing over him. However, he quickly brushes it off, realizing that his reaction was unwarranted.

"Ah, right. I remember him." Beomgyu says, his voice filled with genuine enthusiasm.

Kai's face lights up with a mix of excitement and relief. "Heard that he's the president of the club I'm interested in so it's actually an amazing opportunity. I can't wait to learn from him and be a part of the club," he says with a smile.

Oh.

Beomgyu musters up a smile of his own, his heart warming at the sight of Kai's genuine happiness. He realizes that it's selfish of him to feel sad or jealous about Kai making new connections. After all, they've always supported each other's dreams and passions.

"That's fantastic, Kai. I'm happy for you," Beomgyu says, his voice filled with sincerity. "You're going to do amazing things in that club, I just know it."

Kai's smile widens, his eyes sparkling with gratitude. "Thanks, Beomgyu. Your support means the world to me," he replies, his voice laced with appreciation.

As fate would have it, Beomgyu and Kai quickly forged a deep and unbreakable friendship. Kai became Beomgyu's confidant, his partner in mischief, and the one person who truly understood him.

They would text each other after school, sharing their daily adventures and exchanging funny memes. They would meet up on weekends to hang out, whether it was going to the movies, trying out new food places, or simply taking long walks and talking about everything under the sun.

As they navigated the challenges of high school together, Beomgyu and Kai provided unwavering support for each other. They would offer encouraging words before tests, lend a helping hand with difficult assignments, and listen attentively whenever one of them needed to vent or seek advice.

In the midst of their daily escapades, Beomgyu began to notice a subtle shift in his emotions, finally understanding what he felt when he first met Kai. He found himself paying closer attention to Kai's every word and gesture, cherishing their time together more than ever before. But the thought of confessing his feelings remained a distant notion, buried beneath layers of uncertainty and fear.

Beomgyu watched as Kai effortlessly captivated the hearts of those around him, drawing people in with his infectious energy and genuine kindness. He was the light that brightened Beomgyu's days, and the thought of risking their friendship for the sake of unrequited love seemed unbearable.

Yet, as the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, Beomgyu couldn't help but wonder if there was something more beneath the surface. He found himself stealing glances at Kai when he thought no one was looking, studying the way his eyes sparkled when he laughed and how his smile could light up the entire room.

But doubt plagued Beomgyu's mind. What if Kai didn't feel the same way? What if their friendship crumbled under the weight of unspoken emotions? He couldn't bear the thought of losing Kai, so he chose to keep his feelings hidden, locked away in the depths of his heart.

As time went on, Beomgyu continued to treasure the bond they shared. They created memories together, celebrated victories, and comforted each other during moments of vulnerability. The unspoken connection between them only grew stronger, leaving Beomgyu both fulfilled and longing for something more.

"Kai, do you ever see yourself falling in love?"

Kai paused from drinking his boba tea, "what's with the sudden question?"

"Just answer, silly," Beomgyu isn't sure why he asked that too, it just came to him at the time. He wonders and maybe he simply wants to know.

Kai set his boba tea aside, his gaze still fixed on the mesmerizing colors of the setting sun. He contemplated Beomgyu's question, his mind drifting into the realm of possibilities.

"Love is a complex and beautiful thing," Kai began, his voice filled with a hint of contemplation. "While I can't say for certain when or how it will happen, I do believe that one day, I'll find myself falling in love."

Beomgyu watched Kai intently, captivated by the thoughtful expression on his friend's face. He wondered about the experiences that awaited Kai in the realm of love, eager to hear more of his musings.

"I imagine it will be a connection that transcends words," Kai continued, his tone soft yet filled with hope. "A deep understanding and acceptance of each other, where we can be our true selves without any pretense."

Beomgyu leaned closer, his curiosity getting the better of him. "And what do you think it will feel like?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper, as if afraid to disrupt the moment.

Kai's eyes sparkled as he pondered the question. "Love, I believe, will be like a gentle breeze, comforting and soothing. It will make my heart skip a beat, filling me with warmth and a sense of belonging. But at the same time, it will challenge me to grow and become a better person."

Beomgyu couldn't help but smile at Kai's words, feeling a sense of happiness for his friend's future encounters with love. He knew that Kai was a remarkable person, deserving of a love that would bring him joy and fulfillment.

"I hope you find someone who sees all the incredible qualities that make you who you are," Beomgyu said, his voice full of genuine sincerity. "Someone who appreciates your passion, your kindness, and your unwavering support for others."

Kai's gaze shifted from the sunset to Beomgyu, a soft smile gracing his lips. "Thank you, Beomgyu," he replied warmly. "Having you means the world to me. Your unwavering support and understanding make me believe that love is a beautiful thing worth waiting for."

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over their surroundings, Beomgyu had no idea that Kai, too, was navigating a similar emotional journey. He, too, had noticed the subtle changes in their friendship, the lingering glances, and the unspoken words. How Kai's heart beat a little faster whenever Beomgyu was near, but like Beomgyu, he kept his feelings hidden, afraid of disrupting the beautiful friendship they had built.

Their unspoken yearning filled the air between them, a secret dance of emotions that went unnoticed by everyone but their own hearts. They continued to laugh, play, and conquer challenges together, each longing to bridge the gap between friendship and something more.

In their moments of shared silence, Beomgyu and Kai's eyes would meet, holding the weight of unspoken words. They saw the flicker of something deeper within each other, a connection that defied explanation. And as the days turned into months, hope began to bloom in Beomgyu's heart, whispering the possibility of a love that could transcend their friendship.

Meeting Kai had indeed transformed Mondays from dreadful beginnings to days filled with anticipation and excitement for Beomgyu. The mere thought of starting the week off with Kai's presence made everything seem brighter and more bearable. Mondays became a symbol of new beginnings and the promise of spending time with the person who had become so important to him.

No longer did Beomgyu dread the sound of his alarm on Monday mornings. Instead, he would wake up with renewed energy, eager to see Kai and share the day ahead. Their shared laughter, inside jokes, and heartfelt conversations had become the highlight of his week, injecting joy and warmth into what used to be the most dreaded day.

In the grand scheme of things, Mondays may have seemed insignificant to others, just another day of the week. But for Beomgyu, they held a special place in his heart. They were a reminder of the friendship he held so dear, a chance to create lasting memories, and a beacon of hope that maybe, just maybe, their bond could evolve into something even more beautiful.
