Chapter Text
'Fuck.' Kyle thought as he gripped his pencil tightly.
He had been working all weekend trying to develop words for his feelings. He had just discovered yesterday that Stan and Wendy had broken up- receiving the news from Marjorine of all people- and he was in shock. He asked them both and it was true.
Now, Kyle wouldn't consider himself an optimist but this had breathed fresh life into his once-hopeless crush on Stan, leading to Kyle once again being head over heels for him. The ginger hated it. He felt guilty about liking his super best friend- partly because he felt like it was taking advantage of him- and because Kyle now considered himself close friends with Wendy. He tried shaking off the looming feeling of guilt but it held him in a tight grasp. He had figured that once he started writing his words down, he would forget about the guilt but now it was blocking his whole thoughts. He couldn't come up with anything to write. With a heavy sigh, he set down his pencil. He needed to get ready to hang out with Bebe and Wendy as he had promised them earlier that week that he would take them out to lunch using the money he had earned from tutoring. Wendy had paid last week using the money she made from tutoring as well, Bebe had paid the week before that with money she had earned from working at a local boutique, so it was Kyle’s turn. He quickly threw on his hat and jacket after he calmed down his wild curls.
Kyle rushed downstairs, shouting a hurried “Bye, Mom!” as he opened the door. The second he stepped out he shuddered; he had forgotten how cold Colorado was. He continued through the bitter winter air to Tweak Bros. Coffee, where Wendy and Bebe had practically begged him to take them there. When he arrived, he was bright red in the face from the harsh cold. Wendy and Bebe called him over to their table, which he responded to with a petty eye roll.
“Sooooo,” Bebe cooed, “Wendy and I are officially dating!”
“Oh, wow! Congratulations!” Kyle spoke happily, facing Wendy, “Is that why you broke up with Stan?”
Wendy looked away in fake shame and muffled a giggle, “Maybe-“
Bebe butted in, “For your information, Stan and Wendy agreed that they liked other people, so it was a mutual breakup!”
That shocked Kyle considerably. He figured Wendy was just upset at Stan about something so she broke it off. He never would have guessed it was mutual- let alone that it was because they liked other people-
“Helloooooo?” Bebe said, waving a hand in front of Kyle’s face, “You zoned out for a second, lover boy!”
Kyle’s face erupted in blush red out of embarrassment- had he been that caught up in his thoughts? Surely not!
“Someone likes Stan~” Wendy teased
“I don’t have a crush on Stan!” Kyle said defensively, blush turning his face the color of a tomato.
“Yeah, and I’m not dating Wendy,” Bebe said, rolling her eyes. “It’s way too obvious. You get this look when you're talking to him. And about him, and whenever he's mentioned, and-"
"I get it!" Kyle huffed.
He took a sip of the coffee they had gotten. It tasted like shit, sure, but at least it was warm. Kyle listened to what sounded like a distant conversation but in reality, was at his very own table. He couldn’t believe they knew about it, he thought he had hidden it well! Well, looking back, maybe it was a little obvious. They were always clinging to each other when they were little, they were “super best friends”, and so on. But that was in the past! They’re in high school now, so surely it wasn’t as obvious now, right? Kyle was snapped out of his thoughts by someone pulling him in close.
“Smile for the selfie, Kyle!” Wendy said, holding Bebe and the ginger close in her arms.
Bebe was the one taking the photo, holding it at just the right angle to capture the good side of everyone. She turned to face the other two once she took it, showing it to them. Kyle looked closely at it, analyzing his every feature. He hated how he looked here; he thought his face looked too feminine. He faked a smile, nodding in reluctant approval. Bebe complimented both of them, saying they both looked “so nice!” and “well dressed”. Kyle just rolled his eyes in response while Wendy turned pink.
“I’m going to post it then send it to both of you!” She said, proceeding to type something on her phone and then tapping the screen.
“I’m making this my wallpaper!” Wendy said blissfully, grinning at the two.
“Yeah.. same, totally,” Kyle mumbled, faking a joyous tone. “Anyways, I need to start heading out, I told Stan I would help him with his homework-“
Kyle was interrupted by a unison of childish “ooo”s. He blushed slightly and picked up his belongings.
“God, it’s going to be a long day, isn’t it?” Kyle muttered, annoyance clear in his voice.
