Stranger from Hong Kong

Summary:

Cammy White, Delta Red Operative, is on a mission to track one of the few remaining Shadaloo fugitives who was last seen in a small town in Hong Kong. Despite her initial misgivings, Delta Red Leader Keith Wolfman insisted on her trip to Hong Kong to find this fugitive and bring him in once and for all. Unfortunately things are all too quiet, until a minor mistake on Cammy's part attracts unwanted attention from a fellow Street Fighter.

Takes place a bit before the 「Toxicity」 short story on CFN.

-Delta Red Mission: Defang

Cammy wasn't too keen on being sent on a mission to a small town in Hong Kong, and the fact that it was so early only soured her mood further. However, she was able to convince (read: threaten) Keith that if nothing came of this, she would get a vacation. Judging by the 2 or so hours that have already passed uneventfully, Cammy was already making plans to see Juni.

No one had noticed her from her vantage point, and she was actually quite proud of it. Just shady enough to stave the morning heat away, and just far enough to be unseen by anyone not explicitly looking for her. Though it helped that the town was so peaceful. To her mild surprise, this small town in Hong Kong hadn't even a whiff of criminal activity to Cammy's trained senses.

Admittedly, it wasn't the greatest news for Delta Red though. After all, if Cammy was going to destroy Shadaloo once and for all, she needed SOMETHING to happen. She had known that her target, F.A.N.G, was rather slippery, and was seen roaming China in the direction of Hong Kong recently. She loathed to hear that the former Nguhao Assassin was still alive, but she did find it begrudgingly impressive that he somehow seemed to slip away from death's grasp as well.

If F.A.N.G was at large, though, it meant danger not only for all of the other former Dolls of Shadaloo, but Cammy herself as well. Who knew what that madman would stoop too in order to accomplish his mission to his "Lord".

It all just served to put her back into a sour mood, which many of her fellow Delta Red operatives seemed to point out was her ONLY mood, and hearing THAT really just served to make her more annoyed. She even found herself clicking her tongue in her own mental frustration.

That, however, proved to be a mistake. A young adult, probably not much younger than Cammy herself by the look of him, screeched to a halt on what appeared to be rollerblades and turned an ear to Cammy's direction. Cammy found herself a bit surprised by his acute sense of hearing, and crouched lower into her current position, hoping he would continue on his way.

It proved ineffective though, and instead of taking off on his rollerblades, he took them off his feet instead, quickly changing into a pair of somewhat fashionable sneakers before approaching Cammy's general area. She cursed her luck, finding herself annoyed that this civilian had found her perfectly good vantage point.

"I know you're in here, crook," He said, keeping his stride as calm as his voice. "I'm surprised that my brother and I missed one of you. You really should have let us know."

Cammy almost lost her composure then and there at the sheer gall from this boy. Who did he think he was?! She debated taking him down with one of her C.Q.C. maneuvers, but instead tried moving from her current position using her abilities in stealth. When the boy had his head turned in the opposite direction, which felt like it took ages, she quickly made her way to a different shady corner of the area.

Unfortunately, after settling into her new spot, she found that the boy had somehow followed her movements, though not completely. His firm expression changed to that of suspicion as he gently set his now tied up rollerblades on the ground.

"This is no longer a request. Show yourself now, or leave. I will make you leave if you don't."

Cammy watched as his stance shifted from a neutral stance to a kung fu stance akin to something Chun-Li would start a fight in. Cammy wasn't excited at the prospect of attacking what seemed like a Civilian, but if F.A.N.G caught wind of Delta Red being in the same town he was in, they'd lose him for months, maybe years. She didn't have much of a choice.

"Neutralizing target," she thought to herself, as she leapt into the air, before shifting her momentum to the target with a kick, a perfect Cannon Strike.

Cammy watched in shock as the boy somehow reacted to her movements, barely getting a guard up in time before being pushed back by the force of the kick. His expression seemed to shift to shock as well, as he clearly hadn't been expecting someone of Cammy's caliber to be his opponent.

No matter, she continued her offensive, immediately dashing towards her foe and attempting to start a takedown maneuver. She once again found herself surprised at his fighting acumen, though, and saw him attempt a slashing maneuver with his arm with a speed she wasn't expecting. She had little choice but to dodge out of the way, but was surprised to see that the slash didn't end at just one. No more than 5 times did Cammy have to dodge these slash attacks before his assault finally stopped.

"Are you quite finished, then?" Cammy snipped, as the boy's stance shifted back into his beginning stance. She noticed him sizing her up at this point, clearly not expecting a Delta Red agent to be his opponent.

"I don't know who you are, or why you're here, but you shouldn't expect to attack one of the Twin Dragons and walk away unscathed. If you think I'm easy pickings because my brother isn't here, you've got another thing coming."

Not commenting on his inferiority complex, he was clearly skilled. Whoever taught him must have been quite skilled as well, for he seemed to use his techniques with a discipline that was polished to a shine. She saw very little in the way of openings already, and if he had more techniques like that slashing maneuver, Cammy was in for an annoyingly tough fight.

Words it would be, then.

"You're impeding an international investigation. Surrender now, and you might get to leave without any dislocations."

"That's got to be the worst British accent I've ever heard."

If Cammy was seeing red, she was too mad to notice. Unlike her training would have her do, she immediately attempted a Spiral Arrow aimed at his hip, only to barely see him dodge out of the way, seemingly disappearing as he did. She quickly attempted her Hooligan Combination during her recovery, and was going to attempt a Fatal Leg Twister, but she found that her opponent also had a propensity for curling into a ball and attempted a rolling skybound kick, landing the first clean attack of the fight.

She careened through the air, finally kipping up when she hit the ground, but to her shock, her opponent had almost instantaneously closed the distance and had already grabbed her shoulders. Unable to muster any real defense, she made a pretty poor attempt at guarding her head before realizing that he was actually using her shoulders as leverage to flip over her. Before she could counter the maneuver, she felt a sharp pain on her back and quite a few more slashes before being flung into a heap a few meters away. She slowly made her way to her feet, nursing her back as she did, only to meet the eyes of her opponent, who had a subdued, but noticeable, smirk on his face.

"I warned you. Now leave, before it gets worse for you."

Cocky brat.

She ignored the pain, and this time launched an attack with a bit more thought put into it. She hovered just out of range of his most effective technique, his slashes, and simply waited for him to make a mistake. However, in another surprise, he showed his ability to close the distance with a diving kick as well after making a short leap. But Cammy was ready, and met him with her own Cannon Spike, returning the favor from her earlier aerial offensive attempt.

He was careening through the air similarly to how she was earlier, and she found it prudent to attempt another Hooligan Combination into a Fatal Leg Twister. The boy got up shakily and was clearly expecting another Cannon Strike diving kick attack, but to his surprise, she grabbed him by the neck with her legs, and flung him into the air, continuing her combination attack with a well placed Spiral Arrow to his ribs as he was recovering. She heard him getting up with a hiss, clearly shaken by her attacks, and she found it as good a time as any to end the fight, as she prepared for one of her most devastating, but non-lethal, techniques.

"Spin Drive…" She started, preparing herself for the maneuver. She twisted her body into a coil and was about to launch herself at her foe, but she heard an unmistakable sound from behind her as she was about to unleash the attack.

Meow

Cammy ceased almost immediately, looking to see a beautiful white cat with piercing green eyes. She found herself transfixed, staring at this near perfect specimen and almost forgetting about the foe in front of her, but she found herself not caring, as he seemed to be in little condition to fight.

However, in one more surprise, she heard him cry out in a strained voice, "Wait! No, don't attack the cat! Please, I'll leave you alone, just leave the cat alone…"

And that was enough to let Cammy know that this might have been some kind of misunderstanding. She straightened her form, stretching her back to try and ease the pain (she had a feeling it wouldn't go away any time soon, might need to stretch it regularly), and said, "Have you come to your senses, then?"

He seemed like he was trying to remain stoic in the face of some kind of danger, but he seemed to let his guard down when Cammy walked over to where the cat was sitting and put her hand out to allow it to sniff. She finally broke the silence after a few seconds of this, saying, "I take it that this little one is yours?"

She looked over her shoulder to see his eyes widened by the odd turn of events, before he eventually managed to sputter out, "Uh… yeah… well, no, uh, it's a stray and I like to tame cats around town…"

"A noble mission," She said, finally scratching the cat under its chin, much to its delight, "do you fancy yourself some kind of protector then?"

"A peacekeeper," He admitted, shuffling towards the cat and Cammy, "Me and my twin brother keep things peaceful around here."

Cammy straightened up, and turned to the boy with a rare smile saying, "A noble mission indeed. You might be happy to hear that I'm a peacekeeper of sorts myself. Cammy White, Delta Red Operative of the British Government." She stuck out a hand for him to shake.

"Yang. Yang Lee," He said, as he stuck out one of the hands gingerly holding his ribs from Cammy's earlier attacks. She shook as gently, but firmly, as she could so he could go back to nursing his injury. "Local Peacekeeper."

"For a job as small as 'local peacekeeper', I have to wonder: who exactly taught you? Your skill far exceeds any experience I'd expect from a local peacekeeper."

"Just my Uncles. My Brother and I spar a lot too."

"Have you heard of the famous Street Fighter Chun-Li? You remind me a lot of her."

"Heard of her? She's a friend of the family. We see each other all the time."

Cammy smirked, and continued with, "That would make sense. Fighting you felt a lot like sparring with her. You could say we're friends as well. Funny, she never mentioned you though."

"Nor you to any of us"

The nearby stray cat eventually made its way over to the newly introduced Yang and started rubbing its face on his legs, purring like a motor.

"Seems this little one has taken quite a liking to you. Have you thought of a name?"

"No, this one can be rather skittish, and it's been slow progress with them. I haven't even been able to make out whether it needs to be spayed or neutered yet, and it's been quite a while since I first met it," He said, petting the top of the cat's head, much to its delight. "I'm honestly surprised it was so close to the fight, it usually leaves at the first sign of any sort of violence."

"Perhaps it was looking out for you," Cammy suggested, putting a hand on her hip, and Yang had the good sense to look embarrassed.

"Yeah, sorry for attacking you and your accent. I honestly thought the government investigation thing was some kind of weird ruse."

Cammy had to keep her temper in check, as it seemed he was being sincere, but she replied, "And I apologize for attacking unprovoked. You've given me something to bring back to Delta Red and speak about with our leader. Something like this hasn't really happened before, and it'd be nice to get some kind of procedure for this in writing."

She took time to observe her surroundings and found that no one else had come to watch their fight aside from Yang's stray friend. It was almost as if he too was implementing some sort of assassin-like techniques in his arsenal to keep the fight quiet, but she didn't want to open that can of worms at the moment. So instead, she said, "At the very least, I think I'll be able to continue my mission. We didn't attract too many prying eyes, and stealth is of the utmost importance to my mission at the moment. Though, since I have a local peacekeeper here, I suppose I could ask if you've seen the target I'm looking for?"

She took out her phone to show to Yang and pulled up a picture of the last known sighting of F.A.N.G as well as his past appearance. He squinted in thought before finally saying, "Y'know, I think my brother and I were patrolling a few days ago and found a really tall guy slinking around the local bars. He left in a hurry after seeing us, and I could have sworn he left to the north of town. Hard to miss a guy like that."

"That's… actually extremely helpful. Thank you, Yang. You've been a tremendous help, and quite the opponent as well. If I'm ever in the area again, perhaps a spar would be in order."

Yang seemed to light up at the praise, and bowed politely, saying, "Thank you, Miss Cammy. It would be an honor."

She had to stop the frown that was quickly enveloping her expression at the casual "Miss" she was just called, but quickly recovered saying, "It should go without saying, but please keep my identity secret. I don't envy the explanation you'll have to give to your family, but please do not mention me. My mission success rides on it."

"Of course, Miss Cammy. Take care!" He said, waving with one of his arms before hissing and putting it back to his ribs, turning around, and muttering as he walked away, "Ugh, Hoimei and Shaomei are gonna give an earful when I get home… Not to mention my loudmouthed brother is gonna figure out what happened immediately… For once, I think I'm really in for it..."

Cammy couldn't help but chuckle at his murmurings, and made sure to wave goodbye to his feline friend as well before finding a new vantage point to hide in and plan her next move. If F.A.N.G was heading north, perhaps Delta Red could narrow down his current position. She prepared her communication device and started playing the events she just went through in her head to recount to Keith. She smiled realizing that she probably wasn't going to get that vacation now, but found herself not caring as much. Finding a new friend (and his cat) was a good thing, and she had a feeling Juni would agree. She actually ended up humming to herself setting up her connection to Delta Red, feeling like nothing could bring her mood down now.

"I take it I was right about Hong Kong if you're calling me so quickly into your mission, isn't that right Operator Cammy?"

…almost nothing…

Notes:

This was a fun little bit to write, especially with all the Street Fighter 6 hype!

I always thought it a shame that Yang never meets Cammy in canon, since Yang's winpose in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike has a white cat show up if you win a few times in a row (which to me, reads as the cat feeling safe around Yang). Furthermore, Yang's Likes and Talents include Cats and Taming Cats respectively, so really I think him and Cammy would get along swimmingly. I also threw in a reference to Cammy's new back stretch taunt in SF6 and how she may have gotten it, since it seems to be infamous now.

The setup for this story borrows a bit from the official short story 「Toxicity」, which you can read all of the parts of starting from here: https://game.capcom.com/cfn/sfv/column/132247

Highly recommend it, especially if you think F.A.N.G is annoying or dumb (I like him a lot c: ), it might change at least your current opinion on him, especially in the lead up to A.K.I.
