Chapter Text

In Mike Wheelers Basement
Sometime in the Apocalypse

Late evening
Mike POV:

Will’s lips are downturned. He seems visibly frustrated and sad. I can’t tell what’s up with him, which is strange, I used to be able to read Will like a book. Well actually it’s becoming a bit more common these days. He seems detached. I want to reach out and ask him what’s wrong, but I can just tell he isn’t quite ready to talk. He’s visibly mulling whatever it is around in his head. I’ll let him tell me when he’s ready.

For now that frown on his pretty lips just won’t do. So I get up from my spot next to him on the couch. I’m digging through my collection of tapes for.. AHA! It’s a copy of Should I Stay or Should I Go. I look down intensely at it. To be honest I don’t even know if this is Will’s favorite song anymore.. I don’t really know much about what he likes since he moved to Lenora. He gave away all his D&D stuff and he doesn’t really tell me things like this anymore. Is the Will sitting on my couch even MY Will?

I shake my head violently. No. No. Even if Will is acting differently around me lately, doesn’t mean he’s not the same old Will I’ve come to know and lov- Stop thinking such things Michael. You know he’ll never feel the same. I think a part of my heart cracks at that but I do my best to push it down.

I turn on the heels of my feet, walk over to place the tape in my old junky player and press play. The sounds of The Clash suddenly booming through speakers has Will’s neck snapping up to look at me. His gaze is quizzical. Like he’s looking to me for an answer I haven’t given yet. I give none, instead I start belting out the lyrics like nobodies business.

Darling you’ve got to let me know should I stay or should I go?

Will bursts out laughing immediately. Good, a significant improvement to his previous state. His laugh is so cute. It sends this bubble into my throat and I can’t help but laugh as I start moving my shoulders to the beat.

Will looks at me, I can’t tell what his gaze means but he looks happy so I continue.

If you say that you are mine

I shoot him a sly smile

I’ll be here till the end of time

He returns the smile, setting his face against his closed fist as he seems to focus on my every movement. I can feel the slight warmth of my cheeks as his gaze becomes more intense.

So you got to let me know

I take a slight breathe. My heart seems to be beating faster in my chest.

Should I stay or should I go
It’s always tease, tease, tease
You’re happy when I’m on my knees

Will’s lips turn up into a sly grin. If I didn’t know better I’d think he was flirting with me.

One day it’s fine the next it’s black
So if you want me off your back
Well, come on and let me know
Should I stay or should I go?

The chorus kicks in as Will finally joins in

Should I stay or should I go now?

His lips move so delicately as he sings the words

Should I stay or should I go now?

They look so soft

If I go, there will be trouble
And if I stay it will be double

And kissable

So come on and let me know

At this point I am no longer concerned about the lyrics. They naturally flow out of both of us. We start bouncing around like idiots. Not caring how our bodies move.

I extend my hand in front of Will. Mimicking how one holds a microphone. We each take turn belting out the next verse and bridge. I am not concerned with anything but Will. His laughs, his voice, his smile, his hazel eyes glistening. Everything about him is so perfect.

As the song concludes Will bursts out into laughter. And I can’t resist the laughs that pour out of me. We grab onto one another for balance as breathing and standing up straight becomes more difficult.

After a moment Will pipes up, the words are soft, hard to hear, but I hear them anyway. “Thanks Mike, I really needed this” My voice is quiet, gentle as I reply “Of course, that’s what best friends are for aren’t they?” I’m just glad he’s not upset anymore. I’m sure he’ll tell me everything eventually. He always does.

I feel Will's arms wrapped around my neck, from when we were maintaining each others balance but now the implications of such a position hit me full force and I can’t help that my knees go weak and I fall to the floor in a one big heap. Seemingly taking Will down with me. Our limbs are tangled which only serves to fuel the fire I feel behind my face. Will chuckes, which sends this fluttery feeling to my chest and I can’t help the large goofy grin that spreads on my face.

Scene fade.
