Chapter 1: Flock Of Two
Chapter Text
"Stressed?"
Skizz, for his credit, didn't jump too much when Etho popped up beside him. Closing his book, he turned to look at the other rider. Etho, as always, had a head of messy white hair somehow pulled away from their face by a headband, a cloth covering the lower half of their face, mismatching clothes that had various dragon scales sewn into them, and a spark of mischief in their eyes.
"I guess, just end of year stuff, you know." He responded to Etho's question, setting his book down.
"I don't know because I'm always away for the end of year." Etho said, and Skizz could've sworn they were grinning.
"And who's fault is that?"
"Harold, Skulder, Mala, a death song." Etho counted off their fingers. "Oh! And a baby leviathan class dragon who needed to get to his home!"
The white haired rider started laughing at Skizz's expression, and internally, Skizz couldn't help but feel proud of that. Before he had started hanging out with Etho, nobody could get them to talk, let alone laugh.
"I think the gods need to give you a break." He said shaking his head fondly.
"But then I wouldn't have Glowfin, Forget-Me-Not, Sunwave, or Faolan as my dragons and I wouldn't know Lumie!" Etho protested, gesturing at the scales on his sleeves for each of their dragon friends.
"Etho!"
And what a sight they were. The resident outcast and the kid made of sunshine, sitting outside of the hatchery, laughing their heads off for a reason unknown to anybody but them.
"Anyways, what were you even coming by to ask?" Skizz asked once they had both stopped laughing. If Etho hadn't been grinning before, they were now.
"Wanna come to the Hidden World? Into the giant cave in the lake?"
"I thought students weren't suppose to go down there?"
Etho's face darkened slightly as they spoke. "Yeah, but after all, I am the 'teacher's pet'. Nobody really cares what I do any more."
"Well... if we won't get thrown out, I'm all for it!" Skizz said, nudging his friend in an attempt to cheer them up. Which seemed to work, as Etho's eyes lit up again as they called for Starlit'Void. The sand wraith's head snapped up from where he was resting, and bounded over to his rider. Skizz followed Etho's example and called Gaze over, the triple stryke looking back mournfully at the fish he had been attempting to eat.
It didn't take long to climb on the dragons, their scales warm from the rare sunshine of this time of year. Gaze's light gray and bright purple scales were always cooler then Starlit'Void's deep, vibrant purple base and bright yellow speckles, leading to his name. The triple stryke growled, and with a whisper from Skizz, rose into the air. Etho was not far behind Skizz, overtaking him in mere seconds, hair getting even more messy then it was normally.
As always, this gave way to a chase around the school's caldera, warming up the dragons before they circled back to the sinkhole, and dove in. The mist from the waterfalls left Skizz's clothes sticking to his skin and Gaze's scales slippery. Skizz could barely hear Etho over the noise of the water, but he was pretty sure they were cheering as Starlit'Void dove farther down in a spiral pattern.
It didn't take long for the sinkhole entrance to give way to a large cavern, filled with rock formations hanging from the ceiling and growing from the ground, with water pooling anywhere that it could. There was a noticeable damp smell in the air, one similar to the hatchery or the stables. Skizz looked down at Etho, noticing that Starlit'Void's yellow scales seemed to be glowing faintly. Etho looked up at Skizz, pulling their mask off. They always did that when it was just the two of them, a sign of trust. And Skizz couldn't be more honored.
Skizz caught up to Etho, flashing them a grin of excitement. "So this is your newest place to skip in?"
"You haven't seen the best part yet." Etho said, already moving towards a mist covered sections of the cave. Skizz could vaguely see some colors behind the water, and without a second thought, he was already flying through it to catch up to Etho.
As Skizz flew through the thick mist, his breath caught in his chest. The cave was beautiful. The walls were made of a black and blue rock (or maybe the blue was simply the light), with pillars and pools forming on the base of the cave. The pillars and walls were covered in tiny speaks of colors so bright Skizz didn't think they could possibly exist. There were crystals and mushrooms and more rock formations covering every surface they could, all in colors so bright they looked like the sun.
Skizz look to Etho in awe, before gasping at how Starlit'Void looked. His purple base scales had faded into the background, while the yellow speckles glowed like mini suns and stars along every scale, shifting with every wingbeat. A glance down at Gaze revealed a rainbow of colors covering his scales. Purple and yellow being the most prominent, but with blues and greens and reds mixed in. A look back at Etho showed their excited, yet nervous, expression.
"What do you think?" They asked.
"What do I think?" Skizz echoed, letting out a laugh. "I think this place is amazing."
"Good, because I'd rather live with the dragons forever then be friends with somehow who doesn't like this place." Etho said, face completely serious, before they raced off. "Catch me if you can!"
"What- Etho!" Skizz yelped, smiling as he urged Gaze to fly after his friend.
Skizz chased after Etho, zipping through the maze of pillars, flying above the pools of water, just close enough to reach down and touch the water if he wanted to, catching sights of eggs and wild dragons as he followed Etho around the twists and turns of the cave.
The chase came to an end at the mouth of a small cave, with Etho nowhere to be found. Skizz pulled up, wondering if he had taken a wrong turn in all the chaos. As he was looking around, Starlit'Void came diving from a ledge higher up the wall, with Etho on his back. "Hi Skizz!"
"You jerk! I through I'd lost you!" Skizz yelled at Etho, breaking into laughter as he finished yelling.
Starlit'Void leveled out next to Gaze, letting Etho and Skizz catch their breath. Skizz met Etho's eyes, and he saw freedom reflected in them. This was true freedom, wasn't it?
Etho was the first to turn away, looking towards the cave. "I've got a little hideout in the cave, if you wanna check it out."
"Sure man, let's go!" Skizz gave Etho a thumbs up. The white haired rider smiled, before flying into the cave, with Skizz ducking in seconds later.
The smaller cave still had the glowy affect of the larger system outside, but it was more muted, not as blinding. There was also more green in the cave, as well as moss covering most of the floor. Skizz landed, before getting off Gaze. He looked around to find what he was suppose to do with his dragons, when Etho seemed to sense he was indecisive.
"Let him go, he'll come back when you call him." Etho called from where they were lying on the floor, amidst the moss. "Now, join me on the softest moss ever."
Skizz slowly lowered himself into the moss, hoping it wasn't damp (and being pleasantly surprised when it wasn't.), finding it quite comfortable. He stretched out on his back, putting his arms under his head.
"So this is your new hideout for when you skip school and it isn't because you're off getting dragged into situations?" Skizz asked, noticing the little ledges and dents in the walls that could work to hold things, a pool of water that ran out of the cave, and the nest-like area in the moss Starlit'Void was nestled in.
"I guess, it's much more hidden then my old hideout, at least." Etho replied.
"Yeah, that was just a cave in the wilderness, surprised it wasn't found sooner."
Etho chuckled. "Fair enough."
The two laid in near silence for a few minutes, listening to the sound of the dragons outside, their roars echoing more then they did in the wilderness.
"So, why'd you bring me here?" Skizz broke the silence. "You never show me your hideouts."
Etho paused before answering. "I don't know. I just felt that you deserved to see this."
"Doesn't everyone deserve to see this whole Hidden World?"
"Yes, but... you're special." Etho said, seemingly struggling to find a word to describe Skizz. "You should be down here with me."
"I'm special?" Skizz replied, a teasing smile on his face. "You really think that?"
Etho groaned. "Well, there's not a human word to describe it, so 'special' is a good catchall."
"I feel like I should question the idea that you don't always speak human but it wouldn't be the weirdest thing about you." Skizz remarked.
"It feels like the weirdest thing about me." Etho said, staring at the cave's roof, at the little splashes of colors.
"How so?"
Etho was quiet for almost a minute, trying to find words to explain their feelings. Skizz had seen this happen a few times, mostly while trying to explain why they had been talking to their dragons.
"You ever wish you were a dragon?" Etho finally said.
Skizz shrugged. "I don't ever recall wishing that, but I can see the appeal."
Etho sighed, and Skizz could see their fingers trying to close on something invisible in the moss.
"I look at a dragon and I go 'I should've been that.'. I see a dragon do something and I understand it so perfectly, even if I've never seen that behavior before. I'd rather talk to dragons then be near humans somedays. I even feel wings and a tail that aren't there half the time." Etho closed their eyes, before turning to Skizz before opening them. Skizz startled upon seeing their red eye glow much brighter then it should, just like the dragons in the cave. "I should've been a dragon, or I was in a past life and now I'm human. And I hate it so much sometimes."
"You wouldn't have known me, though."
"Yeah, and you make it harder to hate being human, you know."
"I am... honored." Skizz reached out to hold Etho's hand, giving the rider an encouraging smile. "I don't fully understand what you feel, but I don't really care. As long as you're still next to me, I'm happy with however you are."
Etho accepted the hand, just laying there, breathing for a few seconds. "Thank you Skizz." they said at last, "The same goes to you, as well."
"I'm really glad we got put together on that mission." Skizz said, not mentioning how this was the first time Etho had let themself have physical contact for this long.
"Yeah, that was one of the best things that happened to me." Etho was smiling faintly. "I'm sorry for dumping my weird feelings about being nonhuman on you."
Skizz used his free hand to wave away the apology. "I don't mind, it makes me understand you a bit more, at least."
Etho moved a bit closer to Skizz, who didn't mention it. What the black haired rider did point out was a comment on the idea that had started this.
"You know, you could use the word 'flock'."
When Etho gave him a puzzled look, he explained. "We call dragons who have a close bond flocks, don't we? Even if we don't know exactly what their relationship is, just that it's special. That kind of fits what you were saying."
"A flock." Etho repeated, smiling. "I like that."
"So then, we're a flock of two?"
"Yeah, I like that."
Notes:
I'm declaring Etho to be dragonkin, even through it's not explicitly mentioned because the Vikings didn't have the word yet.
Yeah this is based off my own feelings of being dragonkin so-
------
Just two more notes, Etho and Skizz's relationship is open to interpretation, however I personally see it as queerplatonic and that is canon to the au, but if you wanna say it's a different type of relationship then I can't stop you :/As well as that, the other chapters will be more like snippets of the bigger story, because transforming the School of Dragons story into writing is harder then it looks
Chapter 2: The Rise of Stormheart
Notes:
I'm sorry this chapter doesn't go super in depth with everything in the actual expansion, but that won't be much of a problem in the later chapters!

Chapter Text
"Hey, next time you get into a Situation, come get me, alright?" Skizz told Etho, who was packing their bags for another 'quick' trip.
"I'll try, but it's the edge, not much really happens on the edge itself!"
"... I'm coming with you."
And Skizz was so thankful he had come with Etho. Currently, they were on a ship controlled by dragon hunters, battling Stormheart because she had set a wild and Grimora-ed triple stryke on Dragons Edge. And she had endangered a dragon egg for no reason other then to prove a point.
"Alright, everyone, focus your fire power on the crossbows!" Dagur called out, darting inside the ship to avoid getting shot at. Skizz and Etho followed the order, each taking one side of the ship and meeting at the back to take out the main crossbow. Skizz caught Etho's eyes, seeing that they were enjoying this, to a point. Etho always hated people using dragons for their own gain.
"Go for Stormheart, I'll make sure you're clear." Skizz called to Etho, turning away to check for canons or crossbows hidden along the side of the boat.
As Skizz flew around the boat, he began to wonder if this was that Etho did every time they had a 'mission'. They did seem to take everything in quickly. That thought terrified Skizz, because he and Etho were kids. Skizz was scared out of his mind, and Etho was enjoying themself.
Then again, Berk as a whole often had things like this happen, so maybe for the adults, this was normal.
----
"Oh my gods." Skizz said breathlessly, leaning against a tree on the edge. "That was a close one."
"You're just saying that because this is your first Situation." Etho replied from where they were resting in the branches of the tree.
"One, I was there for Dragon Island, and two, I think you should just runaway to the Hidden World with me and never come back." Skizz told them. "I am very worried for your health and safety."
"I'll be fine, I've been fine so far after all!"
"And you are my flock, so I cannot stand by and let this keep happening."
Skizz noticed that Etho stilled in the tree branches, mostly because the small leaves weren't falling anymore.
"I'm sorry. I'm still getting used to the idea that I'm not alone anymore." Etho's voice was quiet, almost unhearable. Skizz turned around to climb up the tree, finding Etho balancing on two branches, and for the first time, Skizz could visibly see what Etho meant by invisible wings and a tail that don't exist. In the same way that Starlit'Void hunched his wings around him and curled up his tail when he was upset, Etho was also making room for the invisible limbs.
"I'm not mad, I just don't want to see you hurt." Skizz gave Etho a smile. "I truly care about you, and watching you throw away everything when you dive into the water or take on a hunter headfirst, it hurts. And it's scary."
"Okay." Etho said. "I'll try to remember that next time."
----
"I hope you're taking care of that triple stryke well."
Skizz repressed the urge to roll his eyes at Dagur's question.
"I promise Gaze is one of the most well taken-care-of dragons at the school."
"It's true." Etho interjected, walking up with Starlit'Void at their side. "Skizz wears his heart on his sleeve and cares for all the dragons, even those that aren't his own."
"Well, you're the one who befriends every single dragon you see." Skizz said to Etho, who had stopped beside him.
"I'm just special like that." Skizz could tell Etho was grinning as they spoke about their dragon friends.
"You dove headfirst into a maze because Lumie needed help."
"And I love that dragon so much so it was worth it."
"Wait, you're the kid who helped Mala find the ruins of her people?" Dagur broke in, making Skizz startle. He had forgotten about the Berserker. "I must thank you for what you've done for my queen."
"It was nothing, just a few puzzles." Etho said, looking slightly embarrassed by the praise. Skizz elbowed them.
"You kidding? I wasn't there but you were so brave! You saw that there was no time to waste, and you did everything you could to help that krayfin!"
The banter (also known as complimenting Etho for a solid three minutes) was cut short when the wild triple stryke walked up to Etho and Skizz.
"Oh, hello." Etho greeted the dragon, speaking softly in case she wasn't fully calmed down from the Grimora drug. "What are you doing?"
The dragon breathed softly, before holding out her egg. Etho's eyes widened as they took it. "Are you sure?"
The triple stryke growled, before purring. Etho reached up with a single hand to scratch the dragon's lower jaw. "I'll take good care of them, I promise."
The triple stryke turned away with a final huff, before spreading her wings and lifting off into the sky. Etho turned to Skizz and Dagur, holding the egg like it was the most precious thing in the world.
"Did you just get another child?" Skizz asked before Dagur could say anything. Etho chuckled and nodded.
"Yeah, she felt like she couldn't take care of the egg while trying to find a new place, so she trusted me to make sure the baby stays safe." Etho explained, not noticing Dagur's look of bewilderment. Skizz however, did notice the look and decided to spare him from more confusion.
"Etho is a dragon magnet. Every dragon they meet ends up getting attached, no matter the species." He explained, giving Etho an amused look. "Despite the rule of no more then three dragons per student, Etho has between five to ten dragons at any point in time."
"And, on top of that," Skizz added, casting Etho a knowing smile. "Etho has a natural instinct to understand dragons, just like Hiccup and Valka."
"Better then Hiccup!" Etho corrected. "Maybe not Valka."
"Okay, fair enough." Skizz agreed, reached up to pet Gaze as the triple stryke wandered over. "Living with the dragons for 20 years gives her an advantage."
"I could live with the dragons for 20 years."
"Yeah but you'd miss me a bit too much and so I'd be there with you."
"I hate when you're right about this stuff."
----
"What are we going to call the baby dragon?"
"Come on Etho, they haven't even hatched yet."
"Yeah but we need to call them something."
"Alright, do you have any ideas?"
"Holly."
"I'm sorry?"
"The egg looks a bit like a holly berry, so that might work for now."
"I have so many questions."
Etho and Skizz started laughing as they walked towards the hatchery with the egg--apparently named Holly now--in Etho's hands. They had just gotten back from the edge, and after a quick visit to Heather to flaunt that Etho got another dragon egg, they were going to put the egg near the lava pool so it could hatch.
"Oh look, it's the dragon whisperer." A voice called from the main building. Skizz had to hold in a groan once he placed the voice. It was Joel, one of the 'Bad Boys', a group of bullies that hung around the school.
Etho drew their shoulders closer together, but otherwise ignored the other kids. Skizz knew that both the Bad Boys and the Clockers liked to pick on Etho, simply due to how many dragons they had.
"Looks like they got another egg, wonder when Hiccup is going to finally enforce the rules." And Grian had joined in. Now it was only Jimmy left, and nobody really had to worry because Jimmy was utterly pathetic at being a 'bad boy'.
"Yeah- uh-, you should live in the Hidden World with that many dragons." Jimmy said, before putting his head in his hands. "That was so bad." He groaned.
Grian whispered comforts to Jimmy as Joel continued the remarks against Etho. "At this rate, I'm surprised you're even in this school with how often you're away on 'missions'. Wouldn't be surprised of Hiccup kicked you out at this point!"
"That's enough." Skizz growled, making both the Bad Boys and Etho freeze and look at him. "Etho a wonderful kid, and they're doing amazing work outside of the school. What you call skipping is what we call saving dragons from certain death."
"For example, last year, they snuck into a dragon hunter's camp to free almost a dozen captured dragons from their cages, or just now, when we stopped a wild triple stryke with a grudge against humans from destroying the edge." Skizz continued, realizing he was almost yelling, but not caring. "They've protected countless dragons, and they are my friend and I will not stand for them to be treated like this."
With a final glare at the trio sitting on the rocks around the main building, Skizz resumed walking. "Come on Etho, Holly needs to get in the hatchery."
Without a word, Etho continued walking with Skizz. It wasn't until they had almost reached the lava pool that they broke the quiet. "Thank you for that."
"No problem buddy, they should know better then to be bullies." Skizz said, moving to wrap an arm around Etho's shoulder, before remembering that they didn't like physical contact much. "Besides, I meant everything I said out there."
Etho smiled under their mask. Or at least, Skizz knew their face well enough he could guess that was what they were doing.
"You really didn't need to do that, they don't bother me."
"That may be true, but if it's not you it's someone else, and I'd rather nip it in the bud, so to speak." Skizz said, laying a hand on the egg. "Would you stop being friends with me if I was more open about being your friend?"
"No, but I'd probably avoid school more then ever to avoid questions."
Skizz laughed. "Fair enough."
The two reached the lava pool with the mini nests quickly, before scouting out Etho's collection of nests. There were three of them, an extra one being added after Glowfin was brought back from Impossible Island. Etho placed Holly in the nest, hesitating before pulling their hands away.
"They'll be fine." Skizz said, moving to hold Etho's hand. He was surprised when it was accepted, but overall happy about it. "They've got you as a parent, and you're one of the best dragon trainer ever."
"I've never handled a triple stryke before, though." Etho pointed out. "I've taken care of many dragons, but triple strykes are harder then most."
"I'll help you then! I've had Gaze for years, and haven't gotten a new dragon in forever, so I'm happy to help!"
"Did you just offer to help me parent a baby dragon?" Etho asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Uh, not if you don't want the help?" Skizz waved his free hand in panic, he felt trapped under Etho's gaze. "It was just a suggestion!"
Etho chuckled, shaking their head and taking Skizz's second hand. "I'd love the help."
"Good, good, that works then-" Skizz's heart was racing a mile a minute, and he didn't know why. All he had done was offer to help his friend raise a dragon after all.
It didn't matter in the long run, all that mattered currently was running outside with Etho to race their dragons again, just for the fun of it. It was sunny, there was the smell of summer in the air, and there was freedom from Stormheart, at least for a while. There was the sound of roars and laughter in the air, carried away by the breeze. There was the waterfalls that seemed to come from nowhere, and the giant hole that lead to the Hidden World. And, of course, with Etho beside him, this was the place Skizz truly felt at home in.
Notes:
I am writing this on June 30th, 2023. School Of Dragons will be taken down in under 18 hours, for good.
I have written this story to carry through the Age Of The Nightlights expansion, and that is where this fic will end.
This is not the end of this universe though. The Bad Boys and the Clockers both have their own adventures, some of Etho's old friends could show up, and honestly do you think I'm going to ignore the new hybrids and lumie lore we got?I'm not done with this universe, I promise.
Chapter 3: Wrath of Stormheart
Summary:
Alternate chapter title: Etho's most emotionally exhausting week ever
Notes:
Hello everybody! Not to sound needy or anything, but if you've read this far a comment would be nice? I know it's a relatively unknown crossover but comments help with motivation for future projects!
(also you might notice this is part of a series now! I posted a oneshot from an alternative universe a few days ago, and there will be more side fics and oneshots! (both canon to the AU and not))
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
"-and I'll have to introduce you to Lumie."
"I'm excited to meet him, because you've been talking about him this entire flight!"
Skizz and Etho were flying towards Impossible Island to see Lumie, because Etho missed their dragon friend. The sky was clear, and water not as rough as it could be, and they were both flying high.
And of course, Holly was with them. The triple stryke had imprinted on both of them, so they had a dragon child now. And yeah, they got plenty of strange looks from the other schoolmates, but who cares about them!
"Hey Holly, how you doing?" The triple stryke peaked her head out from the pouch on Skizz's back and chirped happily. Skizz chuckled before giving her a few scratches. "Glad to see you're happy."
Gaze tiled his head up to glance at Skizz, who scratched him as well. "Yes, hello, you're here as well."
Starlit'Void growled happily and flapped his wings, giving him and Etho a burst of speed. Skizz shook his head fondly before doing his best to match Etho's speed.
"You learn to control your sand wraith!"
"No! He's perfect the way he is!" Etho retorted, as Starlit'Void just appeared to smile.
Eventually, their chatter quieted down as they reached the stonestack that marked an hour until they reached Impossible Island. The Island was almost barren, hold plant life only on its rocky shores or in the cavern in the center, where Lumie spent a far amount of his time. Speaking of...
"Lumie!"
The luminous krayfin was swimming around the island, peaking his head out of the water every few minutes. When he spotted Etho, he reached his head far up out of the water to meet the rider in midair, and it seemed as if he was grinning.
"How's my favorite leviathan!" Etho asked him, scratching his head.
Skizz couldn't help but chuckle at Etho's excitement about the dragon. Although, he really couldn't blame them. They had been one of the people to rescue the egg from Harold. Well, Skizz had a part in that but he was busy trying to block the feeling of fearing for his life from his brain!
Skizz shook his head to clear the smell of burning air, the sounds of hell, and the taste of ash from it. Dragon Island was behind him, hopefully for good.
Instead, he hung out with Etho, Lumie, Holly, Gaze, and Starlit'Void for almost a fully afternoon, watching the dragons play in the water. It was a peaceful time, one Skizz wished he didn't have to leave.
But leave he did, once Fishlegs brought news of Skulder being stranded, and that Vanaheim was under attack. And all that did was kickstart one of the most emotionally exhausting weeks ever.
-----------------
"There are bones missing."
Skizz's blood freezes at Etho's words. Not just because of the implications, but how dark their voice was. Etho was out for blood.
"Where could they be?" Etho's voice doesn't get any lighter, instead they run to the closest den, finding zero bones in that one. Or in the next, or the next after that.
"What did she do to this place." It wasn't a question, not to Skizz, or to Etho. They both knew better then to ask, because they knew the answer: Stormheart had meddled with the human/dragon peace, and she would pay.
A quick look around the beaches revealed a large heap of bones, not all of them, but a fair amount. Enough to calm Etho down, at least. They spent almost an hour sorting the bones back to which dragon they belonged too, and mourning the skeletons that would never be finished. The remains that had been stolen by the worst of humans. Skizz didn't speak much, knowing what this had done to Etho, what it had meant. It felt like a personal attack for them, because they had a dragon's soul.
In the end, Skulder, Fishlegs, and Snotlout all worked on transporting the bones back to their correct resting places, as Skizz and Etho sat on the beach. Etho was hunched over, drawing shapes in the sand with their finger. Skizz didn't say anything, just moved closer, making sure Etho knew they weren't alone.
"Why did she do this." Etho's voice was close to breaking, and their eyes held a glimmer of tears. "Why did she attack here, of all places."
Skizz sighed, wishing he could give an answer. "I wish I knew."
"This place should never be touched, and yet she barges in, hurts the sentinels, and then robs the final resting place of so many dragons, including sand wraiths." Etho leans into Skizz, resting their head on his shoulder. "I couldn't complete so many sand wraith skeletons."
Skizz knew why that particular dragon hurt, and the reason was laying dejectedly on the ground: Starlit'Void. Etho had such a connection to their dragon, and Starlit'Void mirrored that connection so well.
If that dusk on the beach, on an island humans shouldn't have visited, was the first time Skizz saw Etho cry, he never said anything. He knew it had been a hard day for his flock, just as it had been a hard day for him.
----------------
Skizz watched as Etho faced the elder sentinel, the rider not showing the fear they felt in their face. Their hands, however, were curled into fists.
Etho lowered their head to the sentinel, showing it the proper respect. "Thank you for allowing us on this island, and for letting us try to right the wrong that took place here."
The sentinel let out a low purr, nudging Etho's head with it's snout. Etho let out a breath, and took the dragon's head in their arms. Skizz gave them a thumbs up, because what else could he do? It had been a very emotional day.
Etho turned back to Skizz and the others, and Skizz could see how tired they were. Nobody was making it home that night.
"It's all good, the elder is fine with us here, and it respects us for trying to fix the wrongs." Etho sounded like they were about to pass out where they were standing, so Skizz walked up to help them navigate towards a better spot to crash then a rocky beach.
Camp ended up being under the fruit tree, sprawled out on the grass. The dragons were curled up next to their riders, providing a place to rest their heads and a source of warmth.
Etho and Skizz were still awake as the stars came out, clinging to each other as if life depended on it. Starlit'Void and Gaze were resting behind them, and Holly was sleeping in Gaze's arms.
In the end, Etho fell asleep first. And Skizz was left to reflect on the day. He wasn't sure exactly what happened, but he knew something in Etho had snapped. Their eyes had taken on a harder glint during the battle, and they hadn't let go of their rage from finding the bones were missing.
It scared Skizz, because Etho wasn't scary. They were mysterious, sure, and they loved training exercises, who didn't?
But they had never been scary before, and yet Skizz couldn't think back to the moment Etho couldn't find the bones without a rush of fear running down his spine.
With a sigh, Skizz pushed the thoughts away. He needed sleep if he was going to be able to fight Stormheart.
-----------
"Alright, we need to be quiet." Skizz reminded Etho, who cast him a nervous yet exasperated look.
"Skizz. I know. I know." Etho's eyes softened after speaking. "But thank you for looking out for me and Starlit'Void."
Skizz couldn't help but give his flock a small smile. "Anytime Etho. I meant what I said in the volcano."
The look on what Skizz could see of Etho's face told him everything. That Etho still remembered the words exchanged as they ran for their lives.
The air (is the stale, heat and gas filled substance around them really air?) felt like fire, the tunnels shuttered with every step they took. The growls of a beast only found in nightmares followed the pair as they raced for the safety of the outside. Skizz slows down, unable to keep running.
"After this is all over, I'm not letting anything like this happen to you again." Skizz wheezed, his lungs gasping for air that didn't exist. Etho slowed momentarily to look at him, their eyes not meeting his.
"You can do your best." They said simply, before resuming the sprint to the surface. Skizz quickly resumed running as well, and followed close behind Etho.
"And I'm sorry I haven't done a better job of it." Skizz continued.
"As I said, 'you can do your best.'," Etho said, and Skizz could tell they were smiling. "I'd say you're doing a pretty good job so far."
"Thanks, Etho." Skizz blinks, because with all that has been happening, he's not sure what the future will hold. "That's really nice to hear right now."
--------------
"A triple stryke?"
Skizz was hoping that Etho could hold their tongue and not put them in more danger, because their face had paled to snow at the mention of the dragon. Skizz put a hand on their shoulder, reminding them of the mission.
They were both terrified of one possibility: the triple stryke that was caught was the same one they had saved months ago.
"Yeah, big orange and white one. It'll be shipped off tomorrow, shame it'll probably be killed."
"Alright! Thank you for the info, we're going to back to our ship, our master needs us back!" Skizz shoved himself in front of Etho, trying to hide their desperation. So the triple stryke was probably Holly's mom then.
"Alright, make sure you steer clear of the red table." The hunter said, pointing to the stall in question. "The owners love to 'take in' kids off the street."
Skizz nodded, getting the message. He didn't like the dragon hunters, but this one was at least making sure he and Etho were safe. He steered Etho into the forest, out of earshot of the hunters.
"Skizz, we need to go rescue her, please." Etho said as soon as they were safe. Their eyes showed their desperation clearly, and Skizz couldn't say no. This was a dragon in need, after all.
"Alright. Go, you're the stealthier one, after all. I'll update Eret and the others." Skizz turned around to walk towards the docks, before glancing back at Etho. "Be safe." He added.
Etho nodded, before running off to the boat the dragons were stored on, and Skizz prayed they'd be alright. They had to be at this point.
-----
"That's what you get for hurting our dragons!"
Skizz paused in his firing at the automatons to watch Etho's flight towards Stormheart. He couldn't help but give a bitter grin in their direction. Stormheart was deserving of the pure fury Etho felt, and Skizz was able to say that as a peaceful person, one who tried to avoid fighting.
Etho and Starlit'Void were like one being in flight, and in battle was no diffirent. Starlit'Void swooped close to the water, almost brushing it with his wings, while Etho kept lookout from above, making sure nothing was sneaking up on them.
Skizz knew Etho was more then capable of dealing with Stormheart by themself, so he continued on with his job in the battle: shoot and destroy the automatons and the dragon traps.
The elder sentinel and the wild triple stryke were both on his side, taking care of threats from the air and the sea, making Skizz's job much easier. Valka and Eret were busy making sure nothing snuck into Berk, which was harder then it looked. Skizz knew because he had been on that job until Valka noticed he was having trouble keeping everyone away, and swapped jobs with him. Gods bless Valka because she was an angel.
All of a sudden, things were quieter. Stormheart's ship was sailing away, with Etho and Starlit'Void flying in place, and Skizz didn't need to see Etho's face to know they were smirking.
Skizz turned to help Valka and Eret free the last dragons in the traps, and then he would go check on Etho.
And Holly, who was currently hanging out with Lumie off shore, just out of sight of where Stormheart was sailing.
Things were alright in the end, Etho was shaky and about to pass out, their rage finally run dry. Mostly at least. In the following weeks, Skizz could find them training in tactics more then they usually did. Holly got to see her mother, and yet she stayed with Etho and Skizz, and the newly dubbed Rosey was more then happy to let the humans take care of her dragonet.
Watcher--the elder sentinel Etho had bonded with--had returned to Vanaheim, but Etho and Skizz could visit whenever they wanted, and with time, more missing bones were uncovered.
Lumie moved to Titan Island, as well as finding a way to travel to the Hidden World to join Skizz and Etho. All they cared about was his safety, as Stormheart evidently wanted him for herself.
So, all's well that end's well, isn't it?

Chapter Text
Skizz and Etho weren't always close. If fact, it took Skizz almost half a year before he even talked to Etho.
Etho had turned up on Berk a few days before the school year had started, just barely fourteen and always on the defensive. They were accepted into the school, because they weren't the only kid who turned up like that.
Etho hadn't been anything special for days. Even in the hatchery, when everyone got their first dragons, they didn't choose a special one. A purple sand wraith hatchling had walked up to them, and that hatchling seemed to be all Etho needed. Besides, there were more weird dragons chosen, such as Skizz's own triple stryke.
Admittlly, Etho had returned to the hatchery a few days later to obtain another egg, this one a dragon nobody had seen before. But Etho claimed it was a light fury, a species from far north that mirrored the night furies. That was when the whispers started, but they were quickly over shadowed by Cleo's boneknapper and screaming death causing chaos.
Then the skipping began.
Etho showed up to classes only when they wanted too, which wasn't often. At the same time, they spent every free moment in the wilderness, hanging out with the dragons that lived there.
This was the pattern that followed Etho for almost half a year, while Skizz was busy making friends and learning about Gaze and all the subjects the school offered.
Soon, it winter was upon them, and that was when Etho and Skizz would first meet.
A new dragon species, an island that snowed all year round, and someone named Skulder. That was all it took for Etho and Skizz to be put on a boat with Hiccup and Skulder, to sail to Icestorm Island, to find a home for the groncicle. The boat ride was quiet, but Skizz learned a bit about Etho during the five days on water and more during the three weeks setting up camp on the island. He learned that they weren't from this archipelago, and that they had gotten separated from their two friends and washed up on Berk's shores.
Skizz learned that despite having no last name, they always signed their name as Etho SL due to an old joke between those friends. He learned they love dragons, and find them preferable to humans in some cases. He learned they like to be alone, finding humans annoying most days.
Skizz learned so much, but he couldn't take the cold of the island forever. He took the next boat back to the school, read to make up work he had missed. Etho had stayed, wanting to learn more about groncicles, and Skizz missed them.
Etho had stayed away for weeks, until their light fury egg was about to hatch. There had never been a case of a rider away while an egg was hatching, so the school was in a panic about what to do. And then Etho had showed up, with no communicating, just an instinct that the egg was ready. They also still had the groncicle with them, declaring it their third dragon.
They had been correct in the end, it was a light fury. Etho named her Sundaze, and after letting her grow up for a few weeks, they returned back to Icestorm Island.
Etho wasn't seen again until a week after the final exams. They returned, and were preparing to take an abridged version of the exam, when the death song invaded. The entire school and all of Berk were all needed in relocating the dragon, but Etho seemed to do more then others. There were records of them going out for flights in the middle of the night, and one of these flights resulted in what would be their forth dragon, a razorwhip egg.
That was when the rumors truly started. According to Hiccup, a close friend had allowed Etho to keep the egg, but nothing more was revealed. This lead to some of the other students picking on them, saying that they bribed Hiccup or that Etho was cheating. Skizz always stayed out of it, but he couldn't find a reason why Hiccup would let Etho do that.
Then, when the death song was driven out, it left it's hatchling, which Etho promptly took in. That was the end of Etho's social life, at least for another year, when Skizz was put on a mission with them.
And next up on the adventure list, Dragon Island.
Dragon Island had been tough, and the revelations of the Green Death had shaken Skizz to his core. Etho had taken it in stride, even when the earth shook and the two of them were forced to outrun a beast of nightmares. But after that, Skizz made a promise to himself: never let Etho go without a friend.
But before he could make friends with them, there was Impossible Island. And dragon egg that nobody, even Etho, knew the species of. That didn't stop Etho from diving into the maze, risking their life for this dragon. They came out of it with yet another baby dragon, a stowaway flamewhipper. But Etho seemed to stop caring at the rumors at that point.
It took longer to earn Etho's trust then to become their friend, as apparently Skizz had a 'calming effect' on anyone he met. Within a few weeks, Skizz was regularly skipping meals to meet with Etho in the wilderness, talking about dragons and everything else. Skizz learned more about Etho then he thought he ever could.
He learned they bond with dragons extremely quickly, they love doing stunts on Starlit'Void, they had a fondness for reading, they created their own dye to maintain a purple strip of their hair, they wore a mask solely because they didn't want to give the satisfaction of knowing what was under it to the bullies.
Skizz learned so many little things, so many things that added up to who Etho really was.
Then the Hidden World was revealed, as Skizz and Etho huddled in a cave near the hatchery and wondered if the world was ending. The cave under the school quickly became their home, days spent flying around, mapping everything inside it.
Stormheart provided the next threat, and although it wasn't personal at first, attacking Lumie and ransacking Vanaheim had been the last straw. Skizz had never been scared of Etho until he saw their pure fury at the act of using dragons to power the ship. Skizz knew to stay back and let Etho take the lead on this one, and it payed off.
All that had lead up to this moment.
------
Etho's suiting up for their mission, and Skizz is hovering over them. This one mission was more dangerous then anything else the rider had done in all the years since arriving at the school.
"Well then, I've got everything." Etho said, putting a few flowers into a pouch on their flightsuit. "I'll see you in a bit."
As Etho walks out the door, Skizz grabs their hand, holding them back.
"Promise me you'll survive." Skizz begs, and Etho's eyes hold more worry then ever.
"I'll do my best. Besides, I don't think you can take care of all my dragons." The joke breaks a bit of the tension, and Skizz lets them go.
"I love you." The words go unsaid by Skizz, not knowing how to tell Etho about his feelings. Instead, he waves goodbye at his flock, and lets them go out to risk their life.
----
Skizz can't hear much over the shouting. The battle against Grimmel had arrived, and New Berk was fighting with its back against the wall. Silly Grimmel, didn't he know that a cornered animal is among the most dangerous?
Although he can't hear much, Skizz catches sight of Etho. His flock had arguably the most important job: hit Cloudjumper with an antidote, midflight, in clear range of Grimmel. Etho notices Skizz staring at them and gives a salute, and Skizz can feel their courage reflecting in his own soul. Etho was going to do this no matter what. Skizz can only give them a worried nod in return, before Starlit'Void was off.
The sand wraith was silent as a shadow, quick as the breeze. Etho flew him close to the water, using the sunset's darkening sky to their advantage. Skizz didn't often get to see Etho and Starlit'Void from afar, usually being right next to them. Skizz turned away, not bearing to watch.
"Come on Gaze, we've got to make sure nothing creeps up from behind." The triple stryke growled in excitement, before giving Skizz a reassuring look. Skizz couldn't help but chuckle at his friend's face. He never did understand why there were the people who said to abandon the dragons in the Hidden World.
It wasn't until he heard a growl, louder then most, that he turned back towards where Etho was suppose to be. Cloudjumper was thrashing in midair, letting out circles of fire in every direction. A purple blur sped back him, shooting... sand at Grimmal's dragon held aircraft.
Etho had done it. They had done it, somehow, they had done it.
Skizz lets out a whoop of excitement, because that was his flock flying above the clouds, shooting sand of all things at Grimmal to free the deahtgrippers.
"They did it, voiddamnit. They fucking did it." Skizz doesn't think about the fact he swore, because his flock had pulled off a job that Skizz knows he would fail.
-----
It only takes a few minutes before they find each other in the aftermath of the battle, but those few minutes were far too long for Skizz's liking. Once he spots Etho in all the chaos, he wastes no time.
"Etho!" It's a familiar cry, one used almost daily at this point, but the pure relief in Skizz's voice surprises even him. In the end, the momentum was too much, and they both ended up sprawled out in the long grass, the green stuff in their hair and their clothes torn from the weeks of fighting. Skizz couldn't tell if he was laughing or crying, all he knew was that they had made it. They were both alive.
"We made it." Skizz didn't know if it was him or Etho who said it first, but it ended up being repeated many times as they held onto each other.
Eventually, they quiet down, still holding hands. They just used the time to be with each other, making up for all the missing time from the past week and a half. There's still grass in their hair, and Etho makes quick work of pointing it out. Skizz responds by reaching over to lightly punch Etho, not having the energy to form words to get back at them.
"Hey Skizz, you're the best." Etho breathes, and Skizz can tell they're doing the smile they make when they're to tired to function.
"Thanks. What brings my awesomeness up?" Skizz jokes.
"Just thinking of how much harder this would've been with my flock."
Skizz melts at the words, because he knows as much as he cares for Etho, they care just as much, in their own, weird, dragonish ways.
"I love you so much." Skizz didn't even realize he had said anything until the words were out of his mouth.
Etho just chuckles. "Love you too Skizz, was wondering how long it would take you to voice that thought."
Skizz wanted to scream into a pillow at that moment, but without a pillow, the grass works perfectly. Etho laughs, and Skizz's face is red. Neither say anything else, they know what the other is feeling without trying. Whatever may come, they are a flock, and that isn't affected by how they feel about each other.
----
It's a hard night, because they cannot get to their home for the night.
New Berk is stable, but the school is still open. There is much discussion about the best way to run it, but it will be kept open no matter what. Etho storms out mid conversation because nothing has changed and Skizz follows them.
Etho is found sitting on the edge of a cliff, staring into the night sky. Yet another time Skizz could almost see Etho's should-have-been wings. He thinks they would've been a sand wraith, maybe they were destined to be Starlit'Void. What a funny thought.
Skizz sits next to Etho, and he doesn't say anything. Not at first, because this was concerning Etho's home.
"I just want to be back there."
Skizz nods. "I'm assuming you mean the cave?"
"Yeah."
Skizz leans back, staring at the sky above. "I want to be back there as well, and we'll be back there soon."
"We'll leave in the morning, once we get the dragons."
"We can live in the Hidden World Annex, build a little house with our own lava pool to hatch all the eggs we want."
"We'll be the local legends that exist, but nobody really knows about."
Etho and Skizz talk about their silly ideas for the future for an hour, ranging from doable, to impossible (Although, Etho protests about using the word 'impossible', because they've taken on Impossible Island's labyrinth and won.). They end up laying next to each other, watching the stars until they fall asleep. They don't need to worry anymore.
They've made it this far, and they'll make it farther in the future.

Chapter Text
Etho and Skizz were en route to New Berk, having gotten a message from Valka a day ago requesting their presence, due to their ability to understand dragons extremely well, as Hiccup was away on chiefly duties.
And what did the hours of being alone mean?
It meant Skizz was being teased and bombarded with questions. By his own flock, of all people.
"You took one look at Valka and decided that you'd be a saint around her, and I still don't understand why!"
Skizz groaned playfully. "She's so nice! I've never met a person like her and I didn't have a great relationship with my mom before she died, so..."
"Oh, so you're the one with parent issues then?"
Skizz loved Etho, he really did, but sometimes he wanted to dump them in the middle of the ocean for a night.
"Yep, that's me. You get all the other issues, I get the parent issues."
"I do not have all the other issues!" Etho retorted, as Starlit'Void seemed to chuckle at them.
"Let's see, social outcast, keeps getting into trouble, anger issues but only when Stormheart is brought into it, an obsession to adopt every dragon you come across, you somehow washed up on shore, need I go on?" Skizz asked, counting off his fingers.
Etho blinked. "Longer list then I thought."
Skizz couldn't help but shake his head. This was what he had signed up to back on Dragon Island, after all.
"Actually, how did you end up here, you just kinda... appeared."
Etho grew quiet, before answering the question with a far off look in their eyes.
"Well, my parents both died when I was young, and I was taken in by a friend's mom. My friend, Beef, his family were farmers during the summer, fishers during winter. One day, me, Beef, and Pause went out to see what we could catch but a storm... interrupted. I got thrown off the boat, and I kinda boat-hoped for a few months until I got on the ship that brought me to Berk."
"Adding more issues to the list then." Skizz noted, smirking when Etho have him an exasperate expression.
"Either way, I'm really glad fate brought me here." Etho continued, smiling softly. "These past six years have been the best thing to happen to me."
"Love you too." Skizz replied, dodging the dragon scale thrown at him. Huh, singtail scales this time.
-----
"What kind of dragon are those?" Skizz asked Valka, staring at the hybrids in front of him with awe.
There were three of them, one resembling a light fury but with small black patches, and the other two looking more like night furies. One of the black ones had green eyes and the other had bright blue eyes.
Hybrids weren't a 'new' concept, per say. They had been discovered about two years ago at that point, when Cleo had found the first graveknapper and proceeded to adopt it. She probably was the one best prepared to take care of it anyway, due to her prior experience raising Screamy and Bones.
After that, more hybrids were found and soon, it became normal to see students take one in for their second or third dragon.
"These are the nightlights, Toothless and the Light Fury's offspring." Valka explained, petting the white one. "This is Pouncer, the one with green eyes is Ruffrunner, and the girl is Dart."
Dart seemed to be the leader of the pack, as she was the one in front of her brothers. Pouncer was right behind her, looking at Skizz and Etho with quizzical eyes, while Ruffrunner was in the back, almost asleep.
Oh dear, Skizz and Etho were probably going to get attached to these guys enough that they'd kill for them. Well, Etho's already killed people so it doesn't matter.
"Hey there, how are you guys?" Etho knelt down so they could get to eyelevel with them, as to appear less threatening. "I'm Etho, and this is Skizz, and Starlit'Void and Gaze are around here somewhere."
The attempt seemed to work on them, because Dart came up to Skizz and nuzzled him.
"Aww..." Skizz then tried to pick her up, finding it harder then it looked. "Hello Dart."
A look at Etho, who had both Pouncer and Ruffrunner attached to them, confirmed Skizz's earlier thought. They'd both kill for these dragons. Probably better to not voice that thought in front of Valka.
-------
"So, why is Toothless the only night fury around here anyway?"
Skizz and Etho were flying a little behind Heather, opting to have a chance to talk to each other. Skzz cast Etho a questioning look, before remembering that his flock always skipped history.
"Nobody knows why Toothless is still here, because almost all the night furies were hunted to extinction years ago." Skizz explained, shrugging. Etho titled their head, a puzzled expression on their face.
"No, that's not correct?" Etho turned to look at Heather and Windshear, making sure they were still on course. "The night and light furies relocated to my old archipelago almost a century ago."
Skizz did a double take, staring at Etho. "You had night furies? And more light furies?"
"Yeah, why did you think I knew what Sundaze was before she hatched?"
"I don't know, I just thought you were weird and then Cleo's dragons started causing chaos, so-"
"Sorry to interrupt your chatting, but we're approaching Auction Island soon, and it might be best to go stealth mode." Heather called, causing Skizz and Etho to quiet down.
Auction Island, the place hunters and pirates and scum all gathered to trade and to sell their hauls. It also happened to be ruled by Stormheart, who Etho hated with a burning passion. It seemed Skizz was going to have to work overtime to make sure his flock didn't do something they would later regret.
He also really hoped the missing titan skrill wasn't locked up, purely because lightning and Skizz did not get along very well.
-----
"It's all right, you did a good job."
Pouncer was huddled next to Starlit'Void with Etho, the nightlight shaking and downcast. After the disastrous attempt to figure out what Stormheart needed the Warlords help for, Pouncer had attempted to blind the hunters, but had failed. Most likely due to his young age.
And now the four humans and five dragons had arrived on Titan Island so that Pouncer could meet someone with a similar power.
Skizz always shivered when he went to Titan Island, even with the lava pools that made up most of the interior of the mountain. He guessed it was because this was such a sacred place to the dragons.
Skizz, Valka, and Heather all followed Etho, who was carrying Pouncer. Etho was the one who had 'trained' the dragon they were going to meet after all, they got to lead the way.
"Lumie! Where are you?"
Skizz heard a splash from below, in the mini lake at the bottom of the mountain, He pointed in the direction.
"Ah, thanks Skizz!" Etho started making their way down the rocky pathways to meet their friend. "Lumie! I've brought a friend!"
Lumie peaked his head out from the water, before leaping up to meet Etho in excitement. After splashing everybody except Heather, who had remained in the back, the luminous krayfin started wagging his tail and smiling.
"Hey Lumie! Sorry it's been awhile, but I brought a new friend!"
Etho set Pouncer down, the nightlight still shaking from the fright he had experienced earlier. Lumie noticed this and lit up his scales, making a small flash to comfort the hatchling. Pouncer seemed to perk up, letting out his own fireball, which gave a small flash before sputtering out.
The two continued making the cave light up from their flashes for another few minutes, before Pouncer leapt from the ground to fly above Lumie, chipping happily. Skizz elbowed Etho, who gave him an annoyed look.
"What was that for?"
"You did this." Skizz said. "Just pointing out what you've done."
Etho looked at Lumie and Pouncer again, as now the nightlight had landed on Lumie's shell and seemed to be having a conversation in dragon with him.
"I guess I did help do this."
"Man, you gotta take more credit for your actions." Skizz said, shaking his head. "You've done so much for Berk."
Etho didn't reply, just leaned into Skizz. But Skizz knew them well enough to recognize when they were smiling.
-----
"Remind me why we're doing this again." Skizz asked for the third time in the past few minutes. Etho gave him a knowing look, as they knew why this idea was the cause of horrible memories resurfacing.
"Because Dart needs a chance to spread her wings, this is the first time we've gotten a chance to see the Green Death, and some of the Warlord's ships were spotted sailing this way." Valka said from where she was perched on top on the rock formation.
"Yeah, and the second reason is why I do not want to be here." Skizz muttered, moving closer to Etho. If he zones out too much, the air seems to turn hotter, sounds of screams and roars and lava and falling rocks fills his ears, and the taste of ash and fear and blood fills his mouth. Skizz curls his hands into fists, digging his nails into the skin to remove himself from the past.
"Hey, at least we're not back there, right?" Etho takes his hand, giving Skizz another reason to keep his head in the present.
"Yeah." He replies shakily, making sure not to let go of Etho's hand.
It's another few hours until anything happens, so Etho and Skizz spend a bit racing in the sky, a bit talking about their most recent group of hatchlings, and a bit just messing around doing silly things. Skizz doesn't start to tear up a bit when Valka tells the two of them she's proud of their connection with their dragons, nope not at all!
But all good things come to an end, and as the sun was starting to paint the sky golden and pink, the ships appeared. And with the ships came furious roars from above the clouds, roars Skizz knew by heart. You never do forget some nightmares, especially not when they stem from a life threatening experience and happen for years on end.
One battle to free the captured scuttleclaw eggs later, Skizz is hiding behind Etho as far away from the Green Death as he can be, while Dart and Valka introduce themselves to her. Skizz knows he's shaking, because Etho is holding his hand.
Skizz knows about the idea of 'lasting mental scars'. The idea that if you go though something that endangers you, you will have a mental 'scar', it might fade with time, or it might stay forever. He just never considered Dragon Island might have caused as something like that.
It's almost funny, how many things he faced, all the battles he's fought, and only two things scare him: Etho when they're furious, and the Green Death. Nobody else seems to mind Dragon Island as much as him.
Later on, after the whole deal with the warlords is over, Etho tells him stories of how scared they were during their first few Situations, of the nightmares and little flashes of fear that have lingered for almost five years. And Skizz realizes Etho's dealt with the same thing, they just bury it with more scares and nightmares and adventures.
In the end, Skizz and Etho don't know Dart as well as the other nightlights. They love her, but they still can't get near Dragon Island without the sights, sounds, and tastes of those two days returning in all their glory.
But they still make progress, learning about the Green Death and meeting dragons from the island.
And in the end, maybe they'll find the courage to return.
----
"GET AWAY FROM LUMIE!"
And Skizz knew without looking the warlords had gone for the luminous krayfin. Well, they were going to learn why nobody messed with anybody Etho cared about.
Deep down, Skizz knew he should probably be more concerned about the fact that his flock was about to murder people, but it didn't matter in the long run. Etho had already murdered people before anyways.
And so with just a quick prayer to the gods, Skizz dove back into the battle on Gaze, cheering on Dart and Pouncer. The two of them were doing quite well for their first battle, so all Skizz needed to do was make sure nothing came at those two.
Suddenly, a protective roar filled the battle grounds, unlike any of the dragons Skizz knew the sounds off, quickly glancing towards Etho, he found the answer.
Apparently, Lumie had been dragged onto one of the boats, and while Etho and Starlit'Void had gotten the warlords away from him, Ruffrunner had landed on the deck to make sure nothing could get near Lumie. And it looked like Ruffrunner's power was healing, as just his presence seemed to make Lumie perk up.
Skizz could always count of Ruffrunner to protect everyone he could, something Skizz himself always tried to do. Even in the heat of battle, neither of them would give up.
-------
"I want to give you two a reward for all you've done for the school," Hiccup started, gesturing at Etho and Skizz. "All these years you've taken on foes I couldn't have taken on at your age, and you deserve something special."
Skizz subtly elbowed Etho when they made a noise of disagreement.
"I've talked this over with Toothless and the Light Fury, and we've decided that you may take one of the nightlights in, to train." Hiccup continued, smiling fondly. "So, which ne have you bonded the most with?"
After a few seconds of disbelief, Etho and Skizz turned to each other, and it was little question.
"Pouncer." Etho said firmly. "He's the one we're closest with."
"Really, both of you choose the same?"
Skizz spoke this time. "It's not worth it to separate one from the rest, and the one we have bonded with the least will be going to a place we cannot go."
"Besides, they can come to our home in the Hidden World Annex whenever they want." Etho finished explaining. "We only wish to claim one, and to let the others choose themselves."
Hiccup nodded his head. "That seems fair." With an encouraging look at Pouncer, Hiccup motioned to Skizz and Etho. "Well Pouncer, go meet your new caretakers."
Pouncer seemed to be grinning with excitement as he bounded up to Etho.
"Haha, I'm the favorite!"
"No far, he just likes you better because Lumie likes you!" Skizz complained lightheartedly.
They laughed it off as all three nightlights took a victory lap around New Berk, as Skizz pulled Etho into a side hug. This was their happy ending.
Sure, Stormheart was still out there, but the longer she waited, the harder it would be to take over Berk.
--------
Pouncer settled in quite well, always an exciting presence to have around the house. He acted like an alarm system whenever he didn't know someone who was approaching, which was both very helpful and annoying depending on the time of day.
And it was mere weeks after they took home Pouncer did the second nightlight show up.
Ruffrunner wasn't meant for the icy walls of the Bewilderbeast's sanctuary, despite having a connection to the alpha. So Ruffrunner made his home in the Hidden World, his scales making a map of the night sky. He always helped with the clutches of eggs and the gaggles of hatchings running around, making sure nobody felt left out.
Whenever Skizz and Etho and any of their dragons ventured to the Bewilderbeast's home, Ruffrunner followed. He did love hanging out with the alpha, after all.
As for Etho and Skizz?
They kept doing what they always did: protecting dragons. They stopped being called on by the older riders as much, but every once and a while they followed along to give a hand. In the meantime, they stayed in the Hidden World, keeping an eye on everything inside it.
They did venture up to the surface, mostly for food or to gather supplies. But, they did end up making friends after they settled down. A trio their age (who were in the school, and Skizz did recognize them) ended up hanging out with them quite often. And before a few months were over, Etho and Skizz couldn't imagine life with Ren, Martyn and BigB.
Etho got into their fair share of trouble, getting roped into a weird family dynamic with Cleo (who they were absolutely terrified of), Scar, and Bdubs. It was... interesting, for lack of a better word.
But in the end, it was always Etho and Skizz and Starlit'Void and Gaze, and Lumie and Holly and all the dragons they've met.
This is their happy ending, and they've made it through four (or six, in Etho's case) years of hell for it.
Notes:
(Hey quickly, if you've enjoyed this fic and/or Skizz and Etho's relationship, consider submitting them to the qpr smack down! https://www.tumblr.com/qprsmackdown <- link to the blog which had submission rules! Please if ten people submit them they'll get in and I'm campaigning for them! I've posted fanart for them!)
------
I am so happy I've finished this fic. I didn't expect to write 1000 words before I gave up, and yet I've written just about 11000. It feels a bit unreal, because I've never finished a multi-chapter fic before.
I wrote this fic as a way of coping with the shut down of SoD. It was suppose to be 3 chapters and just about 3000 words. It's now 5 chapters and 11000 words, how about that. I actually almost wrote a sixth chapter, one for the Return To Dragon Island expansion, but that would be set before the 1st chapter and it would fuck with how I wrote everything, so it never made it in. (I might still write it at a later date, but for now it's just referenced)
This AU was about two kids and their dragons, and now it's an entire universe. I've got more fics planned, most of which I hope to write during summer and keep posting into fall.
Info for the next fic:
Title: I Want To Be Fooled By You
Bad boys centric!! it's their backstory!!
It'll probably be about 3 weeks before it's posted, due to only one chapter being written and me having a very busy few weeks (acting camp for a week, and I'll be doing a program on wednesday/Thursday/Friday for the next two weeks), but hopefully it will be written!
If not, I'll probably post a Fundy-centric oneshot or a new fic that's about half done and will feature Skizz and Etho again!
