A heavy sigh left Leo's lips as he flipped over onto his other side yet again. He didn't even bother to readjust the covers as he reached for his phone on the nightstand. He pressed the power button and squinted at the screen as it lit up. He blinked a few times as his eyes adjusted to the gentle illumination his phone cast over his bedroom. Once he could stand the white light shining in his eyes, Leo unlocked the device and swiped through his phone screens. He stopped on the screen that displayed the messaging app icon.
Leo stared at it for a while, contemplating whether or not he should open it. By the time he stopped internally debating with himself, he'd already pressed it. The light changed colour as the messaging app loaded before returning to its bright white. Leo huffed out a sigh again as his gaze landed on his most recent chat. A small ache made itself known in his chest at the name displayed. His thumb hovered over it dangerously close. Leo only needed to lightly press down and the chat would open. He nearly did it without thinking too, but stopped himself when he caught a glimpse of the time in the top left corner of the phone screen.
"He's probably sleeping," Leo muttered dejectedly. Granted, he should've been asleep too. It was nearly three in the morning and Leo has his first training of the season in a few hours. It wouldn't do him any good to show up to the training grounds utterly exhausted from a sleepless night. And all for what? Because he was feeling lonely since Kun went back to Manchester a week ago?
The ache in Leo's chest grew exponentially at the thought of his boyfriend who was so far away. His eyes stung as tears formed in them. Leo cursed under his breath and quickly closed out of the messaging app. He turned off his phone and somewhat slammed it on his nightstand. He then turned back onto his other side and wrestled with his covers. Ultimately giving up after he only managed to tangle his legs in them more.
Leo sharply inhaled and squeezed his eyes shut. His chest growing tight as pressure rapidly built up behind his eyes. He inhaled and exhaled shakily as he pleaded with himself not to cry. Him and Kun have bene doing long distance for years. They're apart from each other longer than they are together. They've hugged and kissed each other goodbye at the airport so may times that it's almost become routine. Leo should be used to this and yet... he isn't.
A wetness streaming down his cheeks brought Leo back to the present. He sniffled and brought a hand up to wipe away the tears. Once he did, they were only replaced by another wave of the salty liquid. He swiped at those too but more and more tears swiftly followed until he couldn't keep up with them. Leo's breath hitched and he gave up on trying to stop himself from crying. It was inevitable.
Leo's chest stuttered with half breaths and hiccups as he wept. He haphazardly kicked his legs until they were free from the bedsheets and threw it over himself. He curled into a ball and held himself tightly in his shaking arms. The loneliness that had been steadily building up within him the past week made itself known with every pitiful whimper and whine that left his mouth, every sob that wracked his body and with every tear that stained his cheeks. Leo was completely consumed by the feeling.
After what must've been almost an hour of crying, Leo's sobs started to die down. His eyes were puffy and bloodshot. Clearly defined tear tracks stained his cheeks and his chest still stuttered with each uneasy breath. Leo sniffled and wiped his snot covered face in his shirt. He was a mess.
Despite how tiring the experience was, Leo couldn't get back to sleep. His mind far too caught up on torturing him with thoughts of Kun to let him get some much needed rest. So, he just laid in bed unmoving and wallowed in his loneliness. A few tears fell from his tired eyes every now and then but never full on crying. And if Leo later went to training wearing a Man City hoodie with huge bags under his eyes, no one said a thing.
