When Blitzø awoke, it was to complete silence. The Prince who had been holding him all night was absent and Blitzø blinked in low light as he sensed a slight chill above the duvet. He snuggled down further, seeking out the comfort he’d been relishing within, and was awash with relief as it greeted him with timid reassurance.
His brain, however, was less enthusiastic about drifting back off. It took Blitzø a few minutes of inner coaxing before he huffed, aching and bruised from his ordeal the day prior. The physical injuries had already healed for the most part, though Blitzø felt a stiffness in his limbs and a slight twinge whenever he breathed.
Sometimes he really didn’t know when to quit.
The pain relented somewhat as Blitzø's became more aware of himself and he released a heavy sigh, willing whatever tension remained to simply leave.
He was probably okay.
Everyone else was more than okay.
The only one who Blitzø felt something not-quite okay around, was the demon who had pulled them out of the mess that Blitzø had unintentionally got them into.
Humans were getting scarier by the day, that was for sure.
Stolas had been overly timid when tending to him in the bath, as though afraid to touch him and Blitzø knew it was down to the amount of fear the Prince had felt from him. It wasn't exactly Stolas that Blitzø had been afraid of.
It was the feeling of nearly getting everyone seriously hurt- or worse, killed. He’d never seen that fucking situation coming, everything had gone down hill so fucking quickly.
The only shred of light about it all had been that Loona wasn’t with them this time. Getting stuck in a collapsing elevator would not have been fun on it’s own, but having a fucking Guardian Angel coming for your ass on top of that was not a situation that any demon wanted to be in.
Not on Earth where staying hidden was a literal law.
Despite needing to recover after his ordeal, Blitzø found himself becoming restless and he quietly slipped free of the bed, lightly pushing the pillows back towards the headboard. He had been so out of it when Stolas had brought them to the random hotel room, that he hadn’t noticed how nice the room actually was.
The floor was blanketed in a luscious cream carpet, disrupted by a dark wooden coffee table and tan leather sofa. There was a balcony hidden from view by a set of sliding glass doors tucked behind curtains that hung down in a cascade of gentle blue.
The bed was smaller than the one Blitzø was used to sleeping in when with the Prince, but it was still adorned with fluffy-looking pillows and came with a navy bed throw. The covers themselves were a deep maroon and Blitzø instantly felt the urge to throw himself onto them again.
He wouldn’t, though. They couldn’t stay here- he wasn’t even sure why Stolas hadn’t returned them to Hell in the first place, which was worrying.
The Prince had certainly gone all out with that fucking Angel, but Blitzø was at a loss as to whether it had died or merely been chased off.
They hadn’t killed their intended target, that was for sure.
The knowledge that Stolas had fought for their protection was something Blitzø couldn't quantify. There was a sense of gratitude, relief, and utter joy, but also immense guilt. Stolas was a powerhouse and made a formidable challenge to anyone who dared try take him on, but Blitzø also knew the owl had been at great risk.
Still was, if this raised any questions back in Hell.
Which it could.
Once upon a time Blitzø couldn't help but think of them all as untouchable.
Millie was unrelenting in her love for Moxxie, for all of them and she was a natural killer.
Moxxie was insanely talented when he put his mind to it and had the confidence to fight back.
Loona was beyond strong, in both mind and heart. She was good with her instincts and she didn’t back down.
Blitzø had evaded death so many times he often thought himself indestructible just because.
Stolas?
As if he had to even explain why the Prince was so fucking powerful.
All that to say that Blitzø knew the Prince wasn’t infallible and could be seriously hurt, very easily in fact, which made the whole scenario even more harrowing.
He could have cost Octavia her Father, purely because he’d not thought to check if potential targets were under any form of Divine Protection.
'Fucking Angel,' Blitzø spat mentally, pulling on a hoodie that had been put aside for him to use. Shuddering from the slight bite to the air, Blitzø padded over to the balcony doors and slid them open with practiced stealth. He slipped out and closed them behind him, inhaling a deep breath of frigid air.
He coughed as his lungs protested and he cursed, leaning over the flat stone surface supported by a series of decorative balustrades. The view from here was pleasant enough, though Blitzø genuinely had no idea exactly 'where' they were.
Buildings lay bundled together alongside a maze of waterways that gave the impression of a city floating upon a sea. For Blitzø, the imagery was something different to what he’d grown up around and he could certainly appreciate it.
Earth was messy, a cesspit with its silver linings that often mirrored the world existing below it.
It was nothing like Hell, though. Not really.
Not at all.
"I shouldn't have expected you to sleep for long."
Blitzø blinked, glancing over his shoulder as Stolas closed the balcony doors behind him, wearing a somewhat hesitant expression. He was in a pair of loose bottoms and a simple white robe that Blitzø noted had some form of floral logo on the back.
It was the most common Stolas had ever looked.
"Morning," he murmured quietly, straightening himself up.
Stolas smiled, moving to join him. They stood there in the quiet, the sun just beginning to peek over the horizon.
"Thank you, Blitzø."
The Imp shook his head, already knowing what the owl was thanking him for. "I’m the asshole that got us in that mess," he mumbled, clasping his hands together. "Shouldn’t have gone in there like that." He inhaled deeply, leaning back as he let his hands catch on the stone ridge he had been leaning upon.
"You shouldn’t have had to save our sorry asses," he sighed, tipping his head forward. "You could have gotten hurt too. You already saved my life before, and you saved M&M’s." He turned to the Prince with earnest scarlet-hues, the breeze ruffling Stolas’ florentine tufts. "I trust you with everything I have, you know that, but I fucked up and I… I’m really sorry.”
Stolas blinked down at the empty waters below before turning and pulling the Imp into a crushing hug. Blitzø startled for a moment before allowing it, gingerly returning the gesture despite feeling a little awkward.
"I'm so sorry that I was nearly too late. To have to see me in such a form… it is not something I would have put you through had there been any other option," Stolas whispered, his emotions spilling over. "You've been my sole support whilst trying to find my feet with this newfound freedom I have. Without you, I would have not become the man I am today. You need to know how much I am willing to face in order to keep you safe, Blitzø."
Blitzø swallowed hard, the awkwardness in his demeanour falling apart under Stolas's sincerity. He didn't know what to say, and thankfully he didn't need to respond as Stolas pulled away, reaching up to brush over a scuff left upon one of Blitzø's horns.
"I am sorry for losing control the way I did," he murmured, remorse lacing his words. “I could not bear to see you harmed.”
Blitzø chuckled at that, shaking his head. "Seriously? I'm the last demon anyone should apologise to for 'losing control'."
Stolas blinked before laughing softly, turning back to the view. "We may have quite the storm when we return."
Blitzø hummed in acknowledgement, Stolas’ calm attitude automatically influencing his own. He shoved his hands into the pockets of his sweatpants, kicking at the balustrades idly. "You ever gonna take up the throne? Seeing as you’re a Prince and all?”
Stolas whirled round in surprise. “Where’d that come from?”
“I dunno,” Blitzø shrugged, having not meant to voice it. “Just… popped into my fucking head.”
Stolas scoffed, shooting him a look as he leant onto the smooth top of the guard. "What would you do if I did?"
Blitzø frowned, watching the break of day bleed a variety of pastels into the sky. "I don’t fucking know, whatever you want me to do," he said carefully, puffing out his cheeks. “Do what I always do, I guess.” Blitzø grinned then, nudging the Prince with an elbow. "If you do become King, you know which fucking throne to plant that feathered ass on."
Blitzø didn't have much of a warning when Stolas grabbed his face and kissed him, but the fact he slipped seamlessly into it didn't register at all. The familiar sensation was partly welcomed and partly not, even as he parted his lips to deepen the contact.
When Stolas shrouded him against the balustrades, Blitzø whined in protest, pushing lightly against the owl’s chest until the taller male broke off with a giggle.
"You really are worth taking risks for," he breathed, eyes sparkling with mirth as Blitzø shook his head bashfully.
"I'm really not," Blitzø managed, finding himself leaning in to place a peck to Stolas's beak before once again being rendered lost to another series of kisses that had him clutching at Stolas’ shirt.
At some point he ended up perched upon the flat stone, carding through Stolas’ feathers and getting lost in the owl’s taste, his warmth- everything.
The glare from the rising sun was harsh upon his skin, but it merely ghosted Stolas’ plumage, scattering various hues of blush and clementine over the florentine that Blitzø was so enamoured with.
“Don’t risk your life for me,” he begged hoarsely, cradling heart-shaped features that were tinted pink. “Fuck, Stolas. Don’t risk your life for me. I couldn’t- I’d never fucking stay sane if you… if you weren’t here.”
It was the first time he’d ever expressed such sentiments and Stolas’ large cerise-rose hues shone with elevation at such words. “You… really mean that?”
“I mean so much more than that,” Blitzø whispered, already dipping back in, unable to resist bestowing further tokens of affection to the man who never once let him down. “You, mean so much more than that.”
Stolas flushed beautifully and Blitzø ignored the warning bells in his brain telling him not to be stupid. He was riding off the fact he’d had a near-death experience. They all had, but-
No, it wasn’t that.
It was just the final nail in the coffin. He didn’t want to one day wake up without this.
Without Stolas.
It would be unforgivable if Blitzø did so without ever voicing the truth that he feared showing physically. Not that his own heart had ever got that memo, he was besotted with Stolas and his heart damn well made that known.
Blitzø had such a lid on it all that he lived in denial but… but not now.
He couldn’t.
“You’ve always meant so much to me, Blitzø,” Stolas was saying, merely a breath away from another kiss as Blitzø intertwined their hands, foreheads resting against one another as the dawn inched towards true morning.
“I’m gonna fucking protect you, too,” Blitzø vowed, wrapping his tail around Stolas’ waist.
“My Knight in Shining Armour,” Stolas chimed softly, pressing tokens of affection to Blitzø’s cheek. “Do you really mean this?”
“I really fucking do,” Blitzø confirmed, heart beating wildly. “Fucking be with me. Be mine.”
Stolas’ eyelashes fluttered as the emotions swelled and he inhaled sharply, nodding his head. “I’ll be with you, Blitzø. I’ll be yours, all yours.”
Blitzø laughed, yanking the owl into a tight embrace as he clutched him close. “I won’t fuck up this time,” he promised, trying to shove down the pressure building within as Stolas sniffled.
They parted just as the loud call of a gull cut through the air and Stolas blinked at the sun ascending towards it’s throne. “It’s a new day, Blitzø. We’ll go forward together.”
Blitzø flashed him a grin, lacing their fingers and hopping down from the balustrade. “Let’s get the fuck outta here, Stolas.”
As the owl behind him tittered, beaming smile lighting up the whole damn hotel more than the sunrise, Blitzø couldn’t help but think the prospect of new beginnings was long overdue for them both.
