Work Text:

The cafe was quiet, with the occasional chatter of people in the background as they ordered. Light shone in through the windows making everything seem more homely. There were a few people scattered about, most of whom were university students planted in front of their laptops, journals, and various pencils and colored pens scattered on their tables. Although most people were sitting towards the front near the electrical outlets, there were two people hidden away in the corner. The two weren’t particularly paying attention to their surroundings being more interested in what they were doing.

On one side of their table were a few books along with a black bag with a white jacket draped over it. It was semi-organized, although it was a bit messy. Meanwhile, the other side was more organized. There was an open laptop set out with two drinks beside it along with a phone with a small charm attached.

As people shuffled about, a blue-haired girl quietly was tapping away at her keyboard. Her expression was blank as she scanned over the paragraphs on the screen, carefully looking it over. Several minutes passed before she sighed and reached for her drink. As she lifted the cup her eyes trailed off to the redhead next to her. Beside her sat Tesla, who at this point had her face shoved into her book as she sloppily wrote notes in a notebook. She was hunched over and looked more similar to a shrimp than a person.

Taking a sip of her drink Einstein sat the cup back down. Putting an elbow on the table she began resting her head against her hand. Boredom was starting to take hold of her, and although she had work she could be doing, the thought of doing it wasn’t appealing. She started tapping her fingers against her cheek before glancing toward the laptop. It’d long since fallen asleep, leaving her own reflection staring back at her.

She thought to herself for a moment before glancing back at Tesla. The temptation to bother her was there. They’d have time to work when they got back, and taking a little break wouldn’t hurt anything. Besides, Tesla really needed to fix her posture anyway. She’d have to deal with her being annoyed with her, but it was a small price to pay.

Besides, she never had any problem interrupting her when she was busy.

A slight mischievous smirk formed on her face. Tesla was reading, completely oblivious to what was fixing to befall her. As she flipped the page her girlfriend began to enact her evil plan, also known as bothering her until she gives in or gets annoyed.

Seconds later Tesla’s ankles were being attacked from underneath the table. Of course, this could only result in one thing. Einstein watched with a blank expression as the, now annoyed, redhead tilted her head to look at her. However, it was hard to take her seriously. Her bangs were covering her face and were a mess, and it didn’t help that her glasses were crooked and were about to slide off. To put it simply Einstein couldn’t bring herself to even be slightly afraid of her.

There was silence between the two as they stared at each other. Einstein debated saying something, however, she ultimately decided it was funnier to just annoy her instead. After a minute of this continuing Tesla sat her pen down with a groan.

“What the hell do you want?” She mumbled under her breath, glaring at her. Her eyes were narrowed in annoyance, and if it was anybody else bothering her she’d be considering murder. With Einstein's blue eyes staring at her blankly, however, she was close to considering murder regardless. “What’s so important that you’re bothering me?!”

“I just felt like bothering you,” she said plainly. As she spoke she used her free hand to brush Tesla's hair out of her face before pushing her glasses back up. “You always complain about me not wanting to talk while studying so I figured I’d try to talk-” she put her hand back onto the table, “-Besides.. You look like a shrimp. You’ll hurt your back if you stay like that for too long.”

“Ugh..”  Despite her teasing her there was some genuine worry behind it. She put a hand on her forehead and squeezed her eyes shut. All of the noises she’d previously tuned out became overbearing. It hadn’t hit her how strained her eyes had gotten, and she suddenly felt exhausted. “Mophead I swear..”

Using her free hand the redhead closed the book with a thud and laid her head on the cover. It was cold against her skin, though it didn’t bother her too much. It was helping her ground herself back in reality and was somewhat helpful in getting her train of thought back. It took her a few minutes, however, she finally opened her eyes again to find Einstein patiently waiting.

As she sat up she pushed her pigtails behind her. She reached for her drink before slumping against Einstein. She hooked her arm around the others and leaned her head against her shoulder. The other looked at her with a small, sweet smile. Though Tesla was too busy trying to look annoyed and drinking her drink to really notice. She rolled her eyes and chuckled slightly. Despite her pouting, she couldn’t help but find her cute. Tesla began to sit her drink down, and once she did Einstein took the opportunity to grab her hand.

The sudden touch startled Tesla and she slightly jumped, almost immediately turning her head towards Einstein. She glared at her, face turning a slight shade of red. Without hesitation, she intertwined their fingers.

“Mophead, you're one of the most annoying people I know,” she muttered as she looked away.

Einstein tilted her head, “I’m not the most annoying?”

Tesla scoffed, “You don’t even compete with some people I know-” she looked at her again, “-At least you’re tolerable. Unlike some people I know.” Einstein looked at her with a fake look of offense before flicking her with her free hand. “OW- MOPHEAD?”

Einstein looked at her with an innocent grin. “What do you mean? I didn’t do anything.” Of course, she wasn’t amused by this. Her eyes narrowed slightly and it looked like she was about to say something. Before she could say anything, though, she decided against it. Instead, she glanced down at her notebook silently.

“.. Hey Mophead, how long have we been here?”

“Hm? Oh..” Einstein glanced down at her phone before tapping against the screen gently. It lit up within an instant, both of their faces staring back at her with a smile, along with several unread text messages from their roommates. She glanced across the names before immediately ignoring them. Not her problem, whatever it was. If it was that bad she’d figure it out once they got back. Checking the time she looked back up, “It’s around.. Seven thirty-two.”

“Mm.. Okay,” there was a brief pause before she squeezed Einstein's hand and looked at her. “Mophead, whenever we get back can we make hot chocolate and go to bed.. I’m exhausted and it’s cold outside.”

“Hm? Oh, sure-” her eyes trailed towards her still-open laptop, “.. I need a break from writing that essay anyways.” Tesla smiled a little before closing her eyes, making a sound that sounded similar to a cat's purr than anything a human could make. Sometimes Einstein genuinely questioned whether she was really a human or if she was three cats in a trenchcoat desperately trying to appear human.

She patted her head before nudging her. Everyone else had begun leaving already, and they still had to walk back. Unsurprisingly she didn’t move. She nudged her a few more times, and when she pretended to not notice her she just stood up leaving her to fall. Magically she was once again paying attention.

“H-HEY?! WHAT WAS THAT FOR?”

“So you are awake,” she looked down at her innocently. “I tried to warn you.” In response, she just stared at her threateningly before pushing herself up. “Come on, we should get back before it starts snowing.”
