Work Text:

It was Friday night, and Amy sat in her bedroom, annoyed that her cousin Rob’ O was keeping her in for the night. Like most teenagers, Amy assumed she’d get to spend her Friday evening out on the town like many other teens her age did, but not tonight. She was supposed to go on a date with a boy from her high school, a junior that she had met during detention. She had fallen asleep in class, and he had been hopping the fence to skip class. While in detention, they got to know one another and started hanging out at school afterward. Eventually, he asked her out, and she, of course, said yes.

Lying on her bed, Amy scrolled through her phone, looking at her friend’s posts on social media as she watched their stories to see what they were getting up to on this night. She scrolled and saw a post of Knuckles and Rouge at some house party with red solo cups in their hands, posing for the camera. She clicked the like button before seeing another picture of her friend Cream and her boyfriend Tails, posing in front of a poster for some movie they were excited to see. The following post she saw was a story of Mighty, Ray, Vector, Espio, and Charmy skateboarding, riding their bikes down the boardwalk, and doing some cool tricks. Amy sighed in annoyance before rolling over on her side and staring at the wall. “Stupid Rob,” she muttered under her breath. She recalled the conversation she had, had with him earlier that afternoon and huffed.

~Flashback~

Coming home from school, Amy hung her backpack on the hook by the door and kicked off her shoes near the front door. “I’m home!” she announced.

Mari-Ann popped her head out of the kitchen door and smiled at the pink hedgehog. “Welcome home, Amy!”

Rob’O was sitting in the living room reading a book as Jon played in his playpen. He turned his head as he watched his younger cousin whizz past him and bolted for the staircase. “Hey, hold your horses!” he yelled.

Amy froze misstep on the staircase, hearing his tone, and cringed internally. Chaos, knew what he wanted now. She rolled her eyes and put on her best face as she came back down the few steps she had taken and walked into the living room to address her older cousin. “Yes, Rob?”

He lowered his novel in his lap. “What’s with the big rush? You’ve got quite a lot of energy from coming home from school.”

“Oh, well, I’m just excited, is all,” she explained as she fiddled with her hands.

He quirked a brow. “And why’s that?”

She nervously looked around the room as she shifted back and forth on her feet. She wasn’t sure how he’d react to her news. “Well, I’m going out tonight on a date. I need to get ready before he comes to pick me up at six.”

Rob’O seemed pleased to hear. “Oh, that’s great. So, you and Sonic got back together after all,” he assumed.

She tucked her arms behind her back. “Actually, no. It’s someone else,” she stated, trying to keep it vague.

He tilted his head, curious. “Do I know the lad?”

Amy bit her lower lip apprehensively. “Um…”

“Rosy,” he stated more sternly. “Who is it?”

“It’s Shadow,” she revealed.

Rob’O stood up from his seat as his expression grew serious. “Absolutely not. I forbid it,” he spoke firmly.

Amy stomped one of her feet down defiantly. “Why not?”

Rob’O walked closer in her direction as he crossed his arms over his chest. “You’re only fifteen, Amy and the guy is seventeen. He’s too old for you, and I don’t trust the guy. He’s a bad influence.” Rob’O had seen this Shadow character a few times when he noticed him dropping Amy off at home after school. Not to mention, Amy had confided in his wife about how the two had met, and the fact his younger cousin had met the male during detention didn’t sit well with him.

“Well, I really like him, and he’s sweet,” she defended. “You just don’t know him as well as I do.”

“That may be so, but it’s still not happening, young lady.”

Amy’s brows furrowed. Why was he being so difficult and overprotective? “You can’t do this to me. You’re not my dad!”

“I may not be your father, but I am responsible for your well-being,” he argued. “I’m still your parental figure. Now, go to your room and do some homework or something. Dinner is at six o clock.”

Amy’s fists clenched up by her sides. “Chaos, I can’t stand you!” He watched as she stormed up the stairs, followed by a loud slam of her bedroom door.

“You’ll learn eventually,” he smirked, not fazed by her sassy comment.

Mari-Ann came out of the kitchen with a dishrag as she wiped off her hands. “Honey, did you really have to be so hard on her? She’s a teenager, after all. She needs to go out, learn, make mistakes, and grow. You can’t control her every move, or she’ll seriously come to resent you.”

“I still need to step in every once and a while and parent. My gut tells me this is not someone I can trust.”
~ End Flashback~

Amy had texted Shadow about what had occurred when she got home. She had told him about the entire back-and-forth conversation Rob, and she had. She also told him she had to cancel her plans with him which he understood. It was almost 10 PM, and Rob and Mari-Ann had already gone to bed. Her phone vibrated on her bed, and she noticed Shadow’s name flash across her screen as she got an incoming text. She picked up her phone and read the text he had sent her.

“Rose, you still up for our date night?”

Amy typed and sent him a response. “Um, don’t you remember? Rob said I couldn’t go out with you.”

“But I made a promise to you that I’d take you out. I never go back on my promises,” he replied.

Amy sighed as she texted him back. “I wish I could go out with you tonight, but Rob found out he’d ground me for a month. ”

“What if he doesn’t find out that I took you out after all?” he sent back.

She was suddenly intrigued. “What do you mean?”

Another text appeared on her end. “I’m breaking you out of there tonight.”

“Are you insane?!” she texted back.

“No, I’m not insane. I’m a bad influence, remember? ;)” he corrected her cheekily.

Amy couldn’t help but giggle at his snarky comment. “Okay, now you’re just being cute. How would we even manage to pull this off?”

“For starters, look out your window.”

Her ears perked in alarm, and she walked over to her bedroom window and pulled back the curtain. Looking down on her front lawn, she gasped when she spotted Shadow standing by the giant oak tree, looking up at her window. She pushed open her window and stuck her head out. “What are you doing here?” she whispered harshly.

He walked up closer to her house so he could hear her better. “Here to pick you up for our date.”

Amy shushed him, fearing she’d wake specific people up. “Shh, you’re being too loud, Rob will hear you, and then I’ll get in more trouble,” she tried to quietly yell-whisper to him.

“What?” he asked, unable to hear her properly.

Amy slapped a hand across her forehead in frustration. She tried to shoo him away. “Ugh, just go home. This can’t happen.”

Shadow refused to allow this night to go to waste, so he placed his phone in his jacket pocket before eying the house's exterior. He calculated the best options for getting up to her room on the second floor. Amy watched him cautiously as he looked like he was planning something. Shadow turned on his heel as if he was going home before running towards her back porch. He hopped onto the air condition unit before leaping up to grab the lattice along the side of her house filled with abundant vines. He used that to get himself closer to the piece of roof dangling off to the side of her bedroom window. Amy gasped as she watched him smoothly maneuver closer to her bedroom window. However, she was worried he would fall and hurt himself, but Shadow made it look effortless. Once he had no more lattice to hold onto, he leaped over to the roof's edge and managed to grab ahold of it.

“Shadow,” Amy whispered, worried he wouldn’t get up.

He quickly pulled himself up, dusted himself off, and then casually approached her bedroom window. Amy backed up as he climbed in through her open window. “Evening,” he smiled charmingly. She lightly punched him in the arm and caused him to shoot her a look. “Hey, what was that for?” he asked, rubbing his arm.

“For being reckless, you could have hurt yourself!” she scolded.

He rubbed the back of his neck. “But I didn’t, now did I? he challenged, grinning boyishly.

“Well, just keep your voice down now that you're here. Rob and my aunt are a few rooms over. I don’t want them to wake up and find you in my room. Rob would have a stroke.”

“Got it.” He suddenly eyed her attire, noting she was in her pajamas, which consisted of red pajama shorts, a loose red T-shirt, and white ankle socks. Her quills were also in a high ponytail, with a few stray pieces framing her face. “Cute outfit, but not exactly suitable for a night out on the town.”

Amy looked down at her clothes, nearly forgetting about her appearance. She blushed, slightly embarrassed to be seen in them. “Well, it’s not like you gave me much warning.”

“Well then, how about you put on something else so we can get out of here? I have no issue with waiting.” He walked around her bedroom, looking at all the décor and pictures. Her bedroom screamed Amy Rose. There was a lot of girly stuff with pink, red, and white themes. Her bedroom felt like it was universally Valentine's Day.

She pondered on it for a few moments before coming to her conclusion. “Okay, just give me a few minutes.”

Shadow smiled and nodded. “Great, well, I’ll give you some privacy to get dressed,” he stated as he walked towards her open bedroom window. He climbed outside and sat on the roof while he waited. Amy rushed over and shut the curtains to get dressed.

A few moments later, Amy popped her head out and spotted the ebony-striped hedgehog sitting on the edge of her roof, scrolling through his phone as he waited. “Ahem,” she announced to get his attention.

He craned his head to look behind him, immediately got to his feet, and hurried over to assist her out of her window. “Here, I’ve got you.” He lent her a hand that she placed hers into. Once she stepped out onto the roof, he looked at her new look. “Wow, you look beautiful, Rose.” She wore loose cotton olive green shorts with a sash tie, a white t-shirt with skinny green stripes, an olive-green denim jacket, and some tan booties. Her hair was still in her ponytail, and she didn’t have enough time to put on any makeup, but she still looked gorgeous.

She blushed shyly at his compliment. “Thank you, Shadow,” she said quietly.

Shadow momentarily let go of her hand as he walked over and closed her bedroom window before going over to the roof's edge. “All right, let’s go.”

Amy looked down at the drop from her second floor to the ground below. It wasn’t too high, but it was high enough that if you didn’t land right, you could easily break a limb or hurt yourself. “Um, how exactly do we get down from here?” she questioned quietly.

“Hold that thought,” he said before jumping off the side of the roof and landing gracefully into a squatting position on the ground below before rising upward. He made a gesture with his hand for her to jump. “Your turn, Rose,” he whispered.

Amy knelt on the roof's edge and looked down, feeling anxious. “Are you crazy? I’m not jumping!” she whispered harshly.

Shadow held out his arms, “Don’t worry, I’m going to catch you.” Amy bit her lower lip, looking even more nervous than before. Shadow sensed her hesitancy as he lowered his outstretched arms for a moment. It was clear she’d need some assurance and a pep talk. “Amy, I won’t let you get hurt,” he assured. “Do you trust me?”

She stared at the handsome black and red hedgehog beneath her as she absorbed his words. She nodded quickly. “Yes, I do.”

“Then sit down on the roof's edge and hop off,” he instructed. “I promise I will catch you, and you know I always keep my promises,” he smiled.

It was true. When Shadow gave someone his word or made a promise, he always followed through with it. It was something she had found extremely attractive in him. Amy exhaled as she sat down on the roof's edge. “Okay, here we go.” She closed her eyes and psyched herself up before pushing off from the edge and free-falling. Amy squeaked softly, but she was securely in the strong male hedgehog’s arms before she realized it. She opened her eyes only to be met by his scarlet eyes. He looked proud in expression that he had kept his promise as he continued to hold her. He smirked down at her. “Told you I’d catch you. Now let’s get moving. The night is still young.”

Shadow continued to carry Amy further away from her house, and she wrapped her arms around his neck. “Where did you park your bike? I’m surprised Rob didn’t hear it.”

He chuckled to himself. “I parked a few houses down just to avoid him from seeing me parked out front. I was thinking a few steps ahead.”

Eventually, the two came to his bike, and he lowered her onto her feet. He grabbed the spare helmet and handed it to her. “Safety first.”

Amy giggled and placed her helmet on, and strapped it in place. Shadow mimicked her actions before straddling his motorcycle. Amy slid behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist to secure her position. “Any chance you’ll tell me where you’re taking me?”

Shadow placed the key into the ignition. “Not a chance, I want to surprise you.” He turned the key into the ignition, roaring the engine to life. Shadow moved the kickstand and began to drive down the suburban street. Amy felt her heart flutter as she was securely glued to Shadow as he drove them away. She knew she was going to have a fantastic night.

•~•

It was almost six in the morning when Shadow and Amy returned from their fabulous date night. Shadow had taken Amy out for Italian at a wonderful hole-in-the-wall establishment. They’d gone to the local arcade on the boardwalk to end the night and lay on the beach to watch the stars. It had been quite well thought out, thoughtful, and romantic. Shadow had been a gentleman the whole time, making her feelings for him grow even more.

Now he had taken her back home to get her back into her bedroom before Rob’ O realized she hadn’t been in for the entire night. The two walked hand in hand back to the side of her house where her bedroom window was. “So, how do I get back up?” she questioned quietly. “Do you expect me to be able to do it in these boots?” she said, gesturing to her cute booties.

Shadow let go of her hand and merely crouched down with his back turned to her. “Hop on, Rose,” he sighed playfully.

“Oh, um, okay…” As instructed, Amy hopped onto Shadow’s back into a piggyback style.

“Make sure you have a secure hold on me,” he reminded her quietly as he walked a reasonable distance from the house to get a good running start.

“Right,” she nodded. She placed her arms around his neck from behind, but not hard enough to choke him. She also hooked her legs around his waist. When he felt her secure hold was locked, he made a mad dash for the air conditioning unit and hopped onto it. Then, Shadow quickly climbed the lattice again, even with the additional weight he had to carry. He scoured the lattice efficiently until he had nowhere else to go, leaped over to grab the roof’s edge, and pulled both up onto the surface. Once they were safely on top, he lowered her onto her feet. “Shadow, you’re incredible,” she whispered.

“Thanks,” he replied, opening her bedroom window and assisting her inside. Shadow climbed in behind her to conclude the date by getting her home safely.

Amy turned to look at Shadow, wishing the date could last longer. “Thank you for taking me out on that date,” she began. “It was wonderful, and I really enjoyed myself,” she said, swaying slightly on her heels.

He smiled at her bashfulness. He had always found it adorable. “I’m happy to hear it. I equally enjoyed spending my night with you.”

She looked away, praying she wouldn’t get a negative response. “Maybe we can have a second secret date night another time?”

“Absolutely,” he confirmed.

Amy’s expression beamed at her response. “That’s great! I look forward to it.”

Shadow shoved his hands into his jacket pockets as he inched closer to her. “Well, it’s been a long night. You need to sleep, and I should get going before your cousin wakes up.”

“Yeah, you’re right,” she concurred. “You should get going and get some rest yourself.”

“Well, goodnight.” The two lingered in the same spot, inches apart. Amy looked up at Shadow as he looked down at her, as she mentally begged him to make a move.

Shadow’s eyes flicked from her jade eyes to her lips as he inched closer. Amy felt it coming as she inched in closer to him. Both of them closed their eyes as their lips made contact. Amy melted into the kiss as Shadow’s lips moved along with hers, gentle and slow. It felt magical and right. After a few moments, Shadow pulled back and smiled at her lovingly. She watched as he backed away before climbing out of her window. Amy watched as he left her home and strolled down the sidewalk. She didn’t know where her relationship would go from here, but she had a lot of optimism.
