Work Text:

I have a problem.

Last night I looked at the stars and gave each one of them a reason why I love you.

The problem is that I ran out of stars.

The USS Enterprise was sailing through the vastness of space, crossing unknown galaxies, which were just a bright spot in the distance, while its crew went about their daily routines. Nothing seemed to deviate from the usual monotony. Procedures and orders were already part of the crew's DNA.
However, tensions were brewing beneath the surface, threatening to disrupt the harmony that had always existed between their famous trio: Captain James T. Kirk, Dr. Leonard McCoy and First Officer Spock.

One night, as the ship glided through the stars, James Kirk and McCoy became embroiled in a heated argument inside the captain's quarters. Voices rose, tempers flared and frustrations boiled over.

Just as McCoy emerged, stunned and hurt, from Jim's quarters, Spock, arriving for his usual game of chess with his captain, saw the bitter departure of the doctor. With his usual calm demeanor, he approached McCoy and greeted him, hoping to diffuse the tension.

"Dr. McCoy, good evening, I trust all is well?" He asked. Although his voice sounded neutral, it contained a concern that the Vulcan masked perfectly. That was completely unusual. Jim and McCoy had been great friends for years, since Academy days, and had always been able to deal with their disagreements, in a much more civilized manner.

The CMO grunted in response, his face marked with annoyance. He bypassed Spock, but turned and apologized to his friend, then, not bothering to engage in any real conversation, Spock watched him go, scowling, before he headed for the Captain's quarters.

Inside, James Kirk sat at his desk, deep in thought. Traces of frustration were still evident on his face. Spock quietly entered the room, knowing that his presence might offer a brief respite from the captain's troubled mind. He approached the chessboard, a subtle invitation to engage in their usual intellectual duel.

"Captain, I sense that something has occurred between you and Dr. McCoy," Spock said, his tone soft but inquisitive. "Would you care to discuss it?"

Kirk looked at his first officer, his gaze wary and distant. "Not really, Spock," he replied curtly. "It's just a minor disagreement."

Spock raised an eyebrow. From the high volume of the earlier conversation, it did not seem that this was a minor disagreement. He knew that was a very human emotional display and not very logical. The chess game began between the two friends, the sound of the chess pieces clinking filled the room.

Captain Kirk, usually known for his joviality, continued, for a good while, serious and taciturn. Spock could feel a heaviness in the air as he again insisted, "Captain, have you encountered any difficulties with Doctor McCoy?"

Jim looked up from the chessboard, his eyes conveying a world of emotions. "Life has its surprises, Spock," he replied cryptically. His voice seemed laden with some hidden meaning. Spock recognized that Jim did not wish to elaborate, and respecting his friend's boundaries, he did not press for more information. Still, the unspoken agitation between Kirk and McCoy continued to weigh heavily on his logical mind.

The next day, as the three met for breakfast in the ship's mess hall, Spock watched closely the tense atmosphere between Kirk and McCoy. Their conversation was stilted, their interactions terse. The once animated banter that had filled the air had been replaced by a heavy silence.

Spock decided to take matters into his own hands. He set his plate aside and cleared his throat, catching the attention of his comrades with trouble. He could feel the unspoken words, the emotions swirling beneath the surface. Spock knew he had to intervene.

"Doctor McCoy, Captain Kirk," Spock began, his tone low and husky. "It is evident that there is a rift between the two of you. May I suggest that we address the problem and work toward a resolution. "It is clear that the current state of affairs is detrimental to our collective welfare," Spock added. "In fact, I believe it is in our best interest to address the problems that lie between us."

Kirk looked at McCoy, and after a moment's hesitation, nodded. Leonard nodded, reluctantly.

Spock continued. "We are more than a crew; we are a family. We have faced numerous challenges together, and it is through unity that we have triumphed. It would be illogical to allow a trivial dispute to overshadow our bond."

Jim and Leonard exchanged glances, as they shared a glimmer of compassion for each other.

McCoy looked up, his eyes filled with regret. "It was not trivial, Spock. However, I apologize for my behavior, Jim," he said, his voice heavy with remorse. "I should have handled things differently."

Without another word, McCoy abruptly pushed away from the table and left the room. Kirk remained silent, his gaze fixed on where McCoy had been sitting. Spock knew there was more to the story, a secret lurking in the captain's heart.

Kirk's face manifested a mixture of shock, confusion and vulnerability. He hesitated, unsure how to put his thoughts into words. Finally, he spoke, his voice barely audible above a whisper, "Bones ... hinted hinted that he had feelings for me beyond our friendship, Spock."

The first officer's eyebrows arched in surprise, but he maintained his impassive demeanor. "Captain, this revelation must have come as quite a shock to you. It is understandable that you are confused about your feelings."

James Kirk nodded; a mixture of emotions playing on his face. "Yeah, Spock! He never gave me any indication of what was going on inside him. The conversation started out calm and then everything spun out of control. I value our friendship, but I don't know if I can reciprocate his feelings. It's complicated."

Spock brought his hand up to almost touch Jim's, which rested on top of the table. "Captain, matters of the heart are indeed complex. It is important to approach this situation honestly. Perhaps it would be beneficial for you to have a further conversation. This time I advise that the conversation be open and calm, with the doctor."

Kirk took a deep breath, reconsidering Spock's words. "You are right. I need to talk to him, again but I'm afraid I might hurt him even more. Yesterday, we both got carried away with our tempers and it didn't end very well."

Spock offered him a reassuring look. "Captain, honesty, when conveyed with empathy, can bridge the gaps that divide us. I have faith in your ability to handle this delicate situation."

With renewed determination, Captain Kirk resolved to seek out Bones and address his feelings openly.

Jim sought out Dr. McCoy, finding him in his office at Sickbay, apparently lost in thought. The doctor looked up as Kirk entered, his expression a mixture of apprehension and vulnerability.

"Jim," McCoy began, his voice tinged with sadness, "I owe you a deeper apology. I never meant for things to get so complicated between us."

He took a moment to compose himself before replying, "Bones, there's no need to apologize. It's just... This caught me off guard. I never expected you to have feelings for me, and I'm still trying to process it all. You never told me about all this."

McCoy nodded, his expressive eyes were sympathetic. "I know it's a lot to take in. It's something that's come up and evolved over time. One day, quite simply, I began to look at you differently. I never intended for our friendship to be strained by my own emotions. I value what we have, and I don't want to lose that."

Kirk sighed, the weight of the situation evident in his voice. "Bones, you are one of my closest friends. I care deeply for you, but I can't deny that I feel conflicted right now. I need time to sort out my own feelings before we can move on."

The CMO nodded again, a hint of disappointment lingering in his gaze. "I understand, Jim. Take all the time you need. I don't want to push you into anything you're not ready for. Just know that I'll be here, no matter what."

He offered a small smile, grateful for McCoy's understanding. "Thank you, Bones. Your friendship means a lot to me, and I want us to find a way to preserve that."

Jim turned, and quickly walked out, leaving only the doctor again. McCoy felt quite miserable. It had taken all his courage to speak openly with Kirk. He knew he had run the risk of not being reciprocated. He tried to concentrate on reading a PADD, but the attempted reading ended up being an impossible task. He rubbed his forehead, in despair, and turned off the screen. He had made a decision and had been consistent with it.

His decision had been to be honest and clear about how he felt about Jim. Despite everything, Leonard did not regret it.

McCoy had decided to get away from Jim, to give him his own space, and it had been days since he had attended his usual leisurely meetings in the captain's quarters after his shifts.

James Kirk spent countless hours reflecting on his feelings. He questioned the nature of his affection for Bones, trying to untangle the threads of friendship and love that seemed intertwined. But with each passing day, his heart began to gravitate toward the figure of Spock, the Vulcan's calm demeanor, unwavering loyalty, and intellectual prowess captivating him in ways he had never anticipated before.

During that time, Spock did not leave his friend's side, engaging him in casual conversations, to make his mind clear, as well as the haze of sadness that had appeared in Jim's normally bright eyes. He became his shadow, a warm and protective shadow.

As the days passed, Captain Kirk found himself in the midst of a whirlwind of emotions. The deep connection he shared with Spock had always been undeniable, but now, as he realized he was falling in love with the Vulcan, his world was thrown into greater chaos.

However, this revelation left Jim even more confused - how could he be in love with two people at once? The weight of his emotions began to get to him, and he sought solace in moments of solitude to sort out his thoughts.

The Vulcan realized, despite all his efforts, that Jim was trying to avoid him. The young captain began to cling to his solitude and dodge everyone. So ever perceptive, noticed that the captain's inner struggle had taken a more tortuous crossroads than at first.  He approached Kirk one evening in the dimly lit corridors of the ship, gentle concern etched on his elegant features. "You seem to be struggling with a deep inner conflict, may I offer my support. I have no desire to intrude, but my captain's health is most important to me."

Jim nodded and pointing to the door to his quarters, invited the Vulcan to enter with him.

In the quiet of his quarters, Kirk motioned for Spock to take a seat. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as they faced each other, both aware of the weight of the conversation that was about to unfold.

"Spock," Kirk began, his voice filled with a mixture of apprehension and determination, "I need to talk to you about something that has been consuming my thoughts. Something that has taken me by surprise."

Spock tilted his head, his brown eyes focused intently on the captain. "I am here to listen. Speak openly and without reservation!"

Taking a deep breath, Kirk continued, "I have come to realize that my feelings for you go beyond friendship, Spock. I'm in love with you."

Silence hung heavily in the air as Spock absorbed the captain's words. The Vulcan's face remained calm, but Kirk could detect a subtle change in his eyes, a glimmer of something deeper.

"I must admit that your revelation is not entirely unexpected," Spock replied, his voice steady. "Our connection has always defied the bounds of logic, and I too have been dealing with emotions that extend beyond the realm of friendship."

Kirk's heart fluttered with a mixture of relief and fear. He reached out, his hand trembling slightly as he found his way to Spock's, their fingers interlaced in silent affirmation.

"But Bones...." Kirk's voice wavered, uncertainty clouding his eyes. "What about Dr. McCoy? I care deeply for him! I don't want to hurt either of you!"

"If all this makes you uncomfortable, I'm willing to step aside and let Dr. McCoy be the one to share his life with you." His noble and loyal first officer! willing to sacrifice himself for him and Bones. Jim was so moved he couldn't keep his voice from trembling.

"That's not what I want." Jim let out a sad smile.

Spock's gaze softened as he looked at the captain, his fingers gently squeezing Kirk's hand. "Jim, the realm of emotions is complex, as is the nature of love. It is possible, for a Vulcan, to care for multiple individuals simultaneously, each connection unique in its own right. We must navigate this path with sensitivity."

"I mean, so, you have feelings for Bones!" Jim raised both his eyebrows, showing a surprise that he sweetened by looking at the floor. They had all been playing hide and seek and disguise, for a long time.

Spock seemed to sketch a faint smile. "Do you think I would have consented to our disagreements and dialectical battles if I had not experienced a strong attraction to that illogical surgeon?"

Kirk nodded, a mixture of relief and guilt taking hold of him. "I understand, Spock. It's just that the intensity of my feelings for you has made everything else seem unclear. But I also don't want to lose what I can have with Bones."

To Jim's surprise, it was Spock who made his not at all usual gesture of resting his arm on his captain's shoulder. Kirk clung to Spock, in an embrace,at first gentle and finally seeming to want to break through his friend's lean body. The first officer ran his long fingers down Jim's back, caressing him.

Jim Kirk and Spock ended up sitting on the captain's couch, right next to the large window that decorated his room. Their bodies remained pressed together in a tender embrace. The soft glow of the distant stars cast a celestial backdrop as they basked in the warmth of their growing affection.

Jim's heart raced as he gazed into his mate's deep, enigmatic eyes. "Spock," he whispered, his voice full of longing, "I never thought I could feel this way about someone. Being with you feels like coming home."

Spock's lips curved into a small, genuine smile, his Vulcan features softened by the light of their connection. "I too am captivated by this unforeseen bond we share. It transcends logic, but it is undeniably real."

Jim's hand reached out to caress Spock's cheek, his touch soft and loving. "I want to share this love, this newfound happiness, with Bones. He's been there for both of us, and I can't imagine embarking on this journey without him!"

Spock leaned into Jim's touch, his voice filled with a mixture of vulnerability and determination. "Jim, I have spent much of my life repressing emotions, believing they hindered my abilities as a Vulcan. But now I know I will know how to make Leonard understand that I love him too. In fact, Leonard has shown unwavering loyalty and love. We must approach him carefully, making sure he understands our intentions and desires."

He leaned in, his lips brushing Spock's in a tender, sweet kiss. It was a promise, a promise of love, acceptance and the unbreakable bond they all shared. Their foreheads touched, their breaths mingling.

"We'll talk to Leonard!" Jim said, his voice full of conviction. "We'll explain everything to him, and if he's willing, we'll embark on this adventure together, the three of us!"

James Kirk brought his hand up to the intercom button, pressing it quickly.

"Bones! Spock and I are waiting for you in my quarters!. I'm sorry to disturb you at this hour, but you need to come quickly!" Jim replied, as he nibbled the Vulcan's ear, gently.

The doctor's sleepy voice, after a long grunt, let itself be heard in the room. "Is there a problem, Jim? Are you both all right?"

"There's nothing wrong, Leonard. Come along with us, please." Spock replied. The sweet, unmistakable sound of a kiss on the skin, and then another, ended the communication.

McCoy almost jumped out of bed, dressing in a soft T-shirt and black cotton pants. After hearing those affectionate sounds, Leonard grinned, his instinct told him that he was being invited to participate in the bond of three souls that would be entwined in a love that would change them forever.

He felt happy, blissful and for the first time in a long time… ALIVE.

The doors to his room closed behind him, and he made his way to Jim's quarters, quickly.
