A Winchester-style Birthday

Summary:

Being a Winchester was something you had been ashamed of but now you weren’t. Why would you be if it meant you had a family that would do anything for you? Even if it meant trying to celebrate your birthday because they knew how important it was to you.

Work Text:

The bunker was exceptionally quiet. More so than usual, Sam could always be found in the kitchen cooking something. While Dean's loud television filled the hallways with the obnoxious sound. Even Cas was usually around making noise at this time, knocking things over accidentally with Jack.

Still, not a single sound could be heard through the entire bunker. You stared down at the clock beside your bed, it was still pretty early.

You slipped into your bunny slippers before grabbing your portable cd player off your table and clipping it to you. Slipping the earbuds into your ears you hit play.

The cd still inside was one you had burned yourself on Sam's computer.

He was against it at first worried you'd give his computer a virus but after you made him sit beside and watch the process he loosened up. You'd take away his computer whenever he wasn't using it to make more CDs.

The kitchen was empty shrugging your shoulders you went towards the fridge. Noticing the beer sitting on the shelf you turned around slowly. You checked to make sure there was no one in the hallway.

Noticing the coast was clear you slowly reached for it. You carefully took the beer bottle from the fridge before opening it with the bottle opener magnet stuck on the fridge door.

Just as you went to bring it up to your lips the bottle was snatched from your hands.

"Still too young." Dean took a swig of the beer in front of you, only teasing.

"Where did you come from?"

"Doesn't matter." He shrugged his shoulders.

"I'm old enough, I'm eighteen now." You pointed out trying to remind your father that it was your birthday. If he was kind enough him letting you drink was the perfect gift.

"Eighteen, not twenty-one," Dean said.

You groaned remembering this was Dean, he wasn't going to let that happen.

Dean rolled his eyes at your dramatics. Pulling your earbuds out you turned to him.

"Where's everyone?" You looked around.

"Sleeping." Dean's flat tone only annoyed you.

"Was sleeping," Sam said as he walked into the kitchen with his laptop tucked under his arm. He went straight for the table.

Getting a new idea you ditched Dean's side.

"You should let me burn another cd." You leaned over the table. Sam looked up at you amused.

"No," Dean stopped you. He grabbed your shoulder pulling you away from your uncle. You groaned and shook off his hand.

Shoving your earbuds back into your ears you walked out of the kitchen. Sam gave his brother a look and Dean shrugged his shoulders.

"Teens," He said sarcastically and Sam sighed.

Helping raise a teenage girl was a lot harder than they ever anticipated. The first few years were easy up until you entered a whole rebellious phase.

They were pretty easy and never hard on you, not wanting to repeat the mistakes that John had done. Once Cas joined the group he helped, he wasn't as responsible or knowledgeable as Sam or Dean but it worked.

Cas helped to balance out their seriousness and rough parenting skills.

Going back to your room you jumped, scared and surprised to see Jack.

He was standing by your door with a wide smile. In his hands was a poorly gift-wrapped box. "It's your birthday." He held his hands out giving you the box.

"You scared me." You said as you took it.

"Sorry, I didn't know where you had gone."

"It's okay," You began opening your door motioning for Jack to follow. He did and as he walked into your room you noticed where he had been staring off to.

Jack was looking at your cd rack. You had specifically made one just for him, complete with all his favorite songs. Putting the gift he gave you down onto your bed you went to get the cd.

"You don't have to." He said but you insisted.

Jack had been around for over a year now and despite it feeling weird having someone your age around it was nice. Though oddly enough he wasn't technically your age.

You wondered if this speck of normalcy is what other teens your age felt. Having a best friend who oftentimes felt more like a sibling rather than just only having a dad and uncle.

Sometimes you'd like to imagine life if you hadn't been born into life on the road but not often. You loved the life you had even with its up and downs.

Replacing the cd you unclipped it from your pants. Jack watched carefully knowing not to touch it in case he managed to mess it up.

Instantly Jack was at peace knowing that his favorite songs would play.

Heading back to your bed you sat down on the edge. Jack did the same he followed after you before kicking off his slippers and sitting crisscrossed beside you. He was excited to see your reaction, he had been making it for a while now.

Ripping off the wrapping paper you were shocked to see what Jack had made.

It was a box he had repurposed, he decorated it and you wondered where he even got the supplies for it. The image of Cas buying craft items running through your head made you laugh.

Carefully opening the box you were shocked to see a trinket tray. It was obvious Jack had made it from clay and painted it himself.

The thought of Jack spending his free time making something for you warmed your heart. He had seen plenty of times the awful pile of jewelry sitting on the edge of your dresser.

“You’re the best.” You grinned. Leaning over you pulled him into a tight bear hug. Jack laughed out loud as he melted into your arms.

“I knew you’d like it.”

“Of course, I would,” Getting up from the bed you went to your dresser. Putting the tray down you scooped your rings up and placed them on the tray.

The design was simple, it was shaped like a star, painted a navy blue with swirls and even smaller painted stars.

It was obvious he had taken into account all of your interests.

The small knock on your door told you who it was. Looking up at it you smiled. "Come in."

Cas carefully opened the door before walking into the room.

"I was looking for you." He said looking at Jack.

"I was just giving her a gift," Jack told his father.

You held it up careful to knock any of the stuff off to show Cas. Like always he gave you a soft smile, happy to see you excited.

"Happy birthday." He nodded in your direction. Unable to fight it you rushed over nearly launching yourself into his arms. You wrapped your arms tightly around his torso hiding your face into the fabric of his trench cloak.

His hands slowly go up before patting your back and your smile grew even bigger.

Pulling away from him you tried to fight back the smile and it looked like he was too.

“You’re incredibly happy today,” Cas commented.

“How can I not be, when I have the best family ever?” You looked back at Jack. He was still excited about the gift he had given you.

"We have something to do so come on."

Jack was now up on his feet ready to bust through the door. As always he was eager and ready to help, you found it endearing how kind Jack was. All he ever wanted to do was help, it was hard to find anyone like that now. Especially in the life you lived.

Cas left your room first and you followed out. Walking behind him towards the library.

To your surprise, you saw a cake on the table. Standing beside it were Dean and Sam. They were smiling as they stood there with paper cone hats on their heads.

Dean approached you reaching down to place the hat on your head. He made sure to pull back the elastic further than needed before releasing it. The thin string smacked against your chin and you playfully swatted his arm.

Rolling his eyes he moved aside to help Cas who looked confused. Jack just copied the way Dean had done it for you and successfully at that.

With everyone wearing their hats, Sam stood up. He lit the candles on the cake and soon everyone sang. It was incredibly off-key and horrible but you didn’t care.

This was your family and even if they couldn’t sing you still loved them.

Leaning over you blew out your candles.

“So what’d you wish for?” Jack asked.

“I can’t tell you or else it won’t come true.” You said.

“Time for gifts,” Dean announced as he bent down grabbing them off the ground.

You hadn’t even noticed he was hiding them.

“This one’s from me,” Sam said as he slid it over.

The box was wrapped in newspaper. You could already tell it was from the paper you read with him. Specifically, the pages that held the Garfield comics you read.

Smiling down at the paper you tore through it and the box. Inside was jewelry, and you almost screamed.

It was perfect. It matched the rest of the ones you were wearing. The pendant was of a skull and it matched the bat one you were currently wearing. Along with shark earrings and a star bracelet.

“This is sick.” You said as you looked down at it.

“You’re welcome,” Sam said, obviously proud of himself.

“Next,” Dean yelled out obnoxiously.

You reached out taking the next gift from your dad. To annoy him you rattled the box pretending to hear what was inside of it. He groaned as he playfully rolled his eyes.

Bringing it back down you tore through the paper.

“I spent a lot of time on that, you could at least admire it.” He pointed out.

“It looks lovely.” You said sarcastically with a smile.

Opening the box you saw what you had been wanting for months.

“No fucking way!” You screamed out.

“Your language.” Dean scolded. Looking up you gave him a look knowing Dean swore the most out of everyone in the bunker.

Dean had gotten you a new cd player. The one you had was from a thrift shop, it was old and struggled to work. On multiple occasions, Sam had to fix it by unscrewing the parts and putting them back together.

“How’d you get this?” You asked as you pulled it from the box.

“That’s a secret.” He said.

“He got it from poker,” Sam spoke up. Dean glared at his brother.

“Cas is next.” Sam gave you the gift.

It was poorly wrapped to where you struggled to hide your smile. You could tell he tried his best.

Tearing through the packaging was harder than it looked. With the amount of tape he used it was nearly impossible. After watching you struggle for a few seconds Dean caved in.

“Give me the thing.” He reached over.

Taking out a knife that was tucked away in his clothes he cut through the layers of tape before handing it back.

Inside the many layers was a book. It was Coraline, one of your childhood reads. Sam introduced you to it, and the one you had was severely damaged from being flung around.

The one Cas had gotten you was new and a different edition. On this one, the binding was a dark blue with gold trimming.

You were in awe and unable to find the right words to say.

“Cas, you’re amazing.” That was all you could manage to say.

“What about me? I’m your dad, I got you a new cd player.” Dean whined.

You looked up shooting him a glare.

“I have her my gift already,” Jack spoke up. You looked over at him.

“He made me a jewelry holder.” You nodded your head.

“Charlie sent her best wishes and she’s sad she can’t make it but she did get you something,” Dean announced as he bent down to get the last gift.

“Charlie got me something?” You yelled out. It had been a while since you had seen the redhead and you missed her. Being around so much testosterone made your head swell sometimes.

Dean handed you the box and in seconds you tore through the wrapping paper. Unlike the boys, she had used actual wrapping paper. On it were ocean animals, she had known how much you liked the ocean.

The small detail made your heart warm. Inside the box was a mug, not just any mug but a star wars mug. You shared your love for the sci-fi movies with her.

Once you spent a girl's night binge-watching them. You desperately needed girl time again. Charlie was comforting and she understood you better than most. In ways that not even the boys could understand.

She was there to help you when you had you had found out you had a serious crush on a girl. You were fifteen and had always doubted it before but she helped.

Charlie was like a big sister to you and you wanted it no other way.

On the mug was Padme Amidala and you couldn’t help but laugh. Everyone around you was confused but they didn’t question it.

Dean took a swig out of the beer that was sitting on the table. Your eyes met it and he instantly noticed.

“No.” He said.

“Please, come on just once.” You begged. He looked reluctant before giving in.

“Just this once because it’s your birthday.” Dean leaned over handing you the bottle. You took a look at the label before bringing it to your lips.

Trying to make it count you took a big sip, enough to fill your cheeks. The bitter flavor hit the back of your throat and you nearly choked.

Forcing yourself you swallowed the nasty liquid.

“That tastes like shit.” You groaned as you handed it back.

“Can I have some too?” Jack asked.

“No,” Sam and Dean said in unison.

“No, seriously how can you drink that?” You asked as you still tried to ignore the bubbly feeling.

“It’s an acquired taste.” Dean looked at the bottle before taking another swig.

“That only you seem to enjoy.” You retorted and Dean rolled his eyes being as grumpy as ever.

“There’s plenty of people who enjoy beer too,” Cas spoke up. Everyone turned to look at him and he just looked confused.

“Those people are idiots then.” You shrugged your shoulders.

“You can’t call people idiots, especially your father.” Dean crossed his arms across his chest.

“It’s my birthday so I get a free pass.” You grinned and he remained quiet.

“You’re the best.” You gushed as you tugged on his arm. Dean remained upright letting you bother him. He wanted to swat you away but he remembered it was your birthday so just this once.

“All of you are. Now bring it in.” You held your arms out. Jack eagerly rushed over and Cas followed. Dean was the only one who pretended to hate it as the group closed in. Sam being the tallest stood on the outer circle yet still managed to pull everyone together.

Dean held onto you tightly resting his cheek against the top of your head. “Happy birthday, kiddo.” He said softly.

You smiled even wider if that was possible. The day had barely begun and it was already a success.
