Chapter 1: Wonders in Miniature

Chapter Text

You stumbled into Rick's lab, your heart pounding in your chest. Sweat trickled down your forehead, and your hands trembled uncontrollably. The events of the day had taken a toll on you, leaving you mentally and emotionally drained.

Rick looked up from his experiments and raised an eyebrow at your disheveled appearance. "Well, well, well, what do we have here?" he quipped, his voice laced with a hint of annoyance. "Looks like someone's been through the wringer. Spit it out already."

You took a deep breath, trying to steady your racing thoughts. It was never easy to open up to Rick, but you knew you needed to let it out. "It... It was a nightmare," you began, your voice shaky. "Everything went wrong, and I just... I couldn't handle it."

Rick leaned back in his chair, giving you a skeptical look. "Nightmare, huh? That's a pretty vague description, pal. Try again and make it worth my time."

A knot formed in your stomach, but you knew you had to push through. You began recounting the harrowing events that had unfolded earlier. Every word felt like a struggle, but you managed to convey the overwhelming fear, the sense of helplessness that had consumed you.

As you spoke, Rick's expression softened slightly, his curiosity piqued. He didn't interrupt or make sarcastic comments. Instead, he listened, albeit with a gruff and stoic demeanor.

When you finished, your voice cracked, and the tears finally spilled over. The weight of everything was too much to bear, and you felt small, vulnerable, and utterly overwhelmed.

Rick watched you with a mix of confusion and concern. He wasn't used to seeing you like this, vulnerable and broken. For a moment, he seemed at a loss for words.

And then something unexpected happened.

A surge of emotional distress overwhelmed you, triggering a regressive response. In that instant, your mind retreated to a younger, more innocent state as a defense mechanism against the trauma. Your thoughts became clouded, and you found yourself feeling small and childlike, seeking comfort and protection.

Rick's eyes widened as he observed the sudden change in your demeanor. He recognized the signs of regression. And even though he was taken aback, he knew he had to adapt to the situation.

He let out a heavy sigh and crouched down to your level. "Listen, kid," he began, his voice surprisingly gentle. "I don't know what the hell just happened, but it looks like you're going through some serious shit. I'm not great at this emotional crap, but if you need someone to take care of you for a while, I guess…I guess I can give it a shot."

You looked at him, your eyes wide and innocent, completely unaware of the change that had taken place within you. You nodded, seeking solace and security.

Rick took a deep breath and stepped into the role you needed him to play. He guided you to a more comfortable space, making sure you were safe and taken care of. He fetched a blanket, brought you a glass of water, and sat beside you, offering a reassuring presence.

Over the next few hours, Rick did his best to understand your needs and provide the care you required. He engaged in childlike activities with you, reading stories, playing simple games, and offering words of encouragement. He may have been gruff and sarcastic, but he softened his tone, allowing a glimpse of warmth and understanding to surface.

As time passed, the overwhelming emotions gradually subsided, and you began to regain your composure. The fog in your mind lifted, and the weight of your trauma felt a little more manageable.

You looked at Rick, gratitude shining in your eyes. "Thank you," you whispered, your voice filled with a mix of appreciation and vulnerability.

Rick grunted in response, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Don't mention it, kid. Just... take care of yourself."

In the aftermath of your emotional breakdown, you found yourself feeling a mix of embarrassment and gratitude towards Rick. While his gruff exterior hadn't completely faded, you could sense a genuine concern beneath it all. The fact that he was willing to be there for you, even in his own unconventional way, meant more than words could express.

As the minutes turned into hours, Rick continued to play the role of caregiver. He sat beside you, offering comfort and reassurance while engaging in activities that were both simple and comforting. His scientific gadgets and experiments took a backseat as he focused on giving you the care you needed.

"Alright, little one, let's get this show on the road," Rick said, rummaging through his hidden stash of snacks. "I know traumatic stuff or whatever can be a real downer, but nothing a little sugar rush can't fix."

You giggled as he grabbed a bag of gummy worms, offering them to you with a warm smile. "Here, have some of these colorful doodads. Trust me, they're even tastier than they look."

As you savored the strangely delicious gummy worms, you noticed Rick observing you with a mixture of curiosity and amusement. "You know, for a fragile human, you're not half bad in little mode," he commented, leaning back in his chair.

"Thank you, Rick," you replied, your voice filled with childlike innocence. "I like being with you. You make me happy."

Rick snorted, trying to hide his own fondness behind a gruff exterior. "Yeah, yeah, don't go getting all mushy on me. I'm still the same old Rick, just making sure you're alright."

Throughout the day, Rick introduced you to various activities that brought a sparkle of joy to your eyes. From inventing silly contraptions to exploring the wonders of his miniaturized universe, each moment was filled with childlike wonder and laughter, temporarily overshadowing the weight of your trauma.

"Look, kiddo," Rick said as he adjusted the dials on his latest invention, a miniature amusement park. "Life can be tough and scary, but finding joy in the small things is what keeps us going. Let's have some fun together, huh?"

You watched in awe as the tiny roller coasters and Ferris wheels whirled to life, the miniaturized park now a testament to Rick's ingenuity. The sight filled you with a sense of wonder and appreciation for the complexity of the world around you.

As the evening approached, Rick took a seat next to you, his usually cold gaze softening just a touch. "You know, little one," he started, his voice tinged with a rare vulnerability. "I've seen some messed-up shit in my time, and I've made plenty of mistakes along the way. But none of us can face this crazy universe alone."

You nodded, your eyes wide with understanding. "I'm glad I have you, Rick," you confessed, your voice filled with innocence. "You're my friend, and you make me feel safe."

Rick grumbled, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. "Yeah, yeah, don't go telling everyone about it," he muttered, averting his gaze. "I've got a reputation to uphold, you know."

You giggled, enjoying the subtle shift in Rick's demeanor. Even though he tried to play it off, his actions spoke louder than words, revealing a caring side that he rarely let others see.

As the night wore on, Rick retreated back into his lab, leaving you with a newfound sense of security and happiness. The trauma hadn't disappeared, but you now knew that you had someone in your corner, someone who would be there for you in their own unique way.

In the coming days and weeks, you would continue to navigate the challenges of healing, with Rick occasionally providing guidance and support. It wasn't always easy, and there were setbacks along the way, but you held onto the memories of that day in the lab, knowing that you were stronger because of it.
