Work Text:
A girls hand firmly gripped the lower half of a flower stem, plucked it carefully and put it in a basket with a handful of other flowers.
The girl wiped sweat off of her forehead and looked across the field.
"Mametchi! It's about time we finished picking, isn't it?" She shouted.
A boy poked his head over a short hill.
"Uh.. OK! Just give me a sec, Himespetchi!"
Himespetchi sighed. She picked up her feet and jogged over to a shady tree, a tree that would protect her from the suns deadly rays.
She and Mametchi were picking flowers for one simple reason. To hand out to the couples at the school dance!
And she was beyond excited. Picking flowers for a couples dance with her crush?
She couldn't believe her luck. It was her plan to ask him out during this short trip.
The girl sat down and rested her head on the back of the tree. She watched Mametchi sloppily picking as many flowers as he could.
A few moments passed, and the yellow tamagotchi finished flower picking and ran over to Himespetchi with an overflowing basket.
They relaxed next to each other.
"So, do you know any couples who are going to the dance?" Himespetchi questioned
"Hmm... I don't actually know anybody whose going, but I can make a guess!"
The girl immediately looked interested,
and Mametchi took this as a 'go on'.
"Well, obviously Yumemitchi and Kiraritchi are going together."
"Oh, yeah! Those two are inseparable, I wouldn't be suprised."
"And!... Actually I can't think of anyone else.."
And they both fell silent.
I suppose this is as good a time as any...
"Mametchi!" Oops. Too loud.
"I, uh, have something to ask you.."
"Oh, go right ahead!"
With her face turning red, Himespetchi began with her speech.
"So, we've been friends for quite a while and.."
Here goes nothing...
"I REALLY LIKE YOU MAMETCHI!"
Mametchi fell back at the sudden volume.
"You- Wh- Huh?"
"W-well it's just that.." Take a deep breath.
"Ever since I first met you I really liked you. I.. loved you, and I-I just wanted to ask if y-you would take me to the dance..?"
Her face was so hot that she thought it would
set ablaze.
"Oh, Himespetchi..." Mametchi began, sorrow painted on his face.
Oh no.
"I-I really should have told you sooner.."
She couldn't breathe.
"Himespetchi, I'm.. gay."
She was sure her heart just broke into a million pieces.
"You're... what..?"
"Do you not know what it means?"
"NO! No, I-I do know... it's just.. Why didn't you tell me sooner? H-have you told anybody else?"
He looked slightly nervous to answer.
"Well, there's one person I've told before you.."
The girl didn't say a word, just waited for him to continue.
"OK, so the only other person I've told is.. Righttchi."
"Righttchi?! Why him of all people?"
This whole thing was making Himespetchi feel like the most miserable girl in the world, and Mametchis response wasn't going to help.
"I guess if I have to be honest.. it's because I was, and still am, in love with him"
She felt like she was shot by a thousand bullets.
Mametchi continued.
"I was asking him out and, well, couldn't really tell him without outing myself, could I?"
He chuckled awkwardly.
...
It was quiet for a moment, they were both just... thinking.
"So, are you taking Righttchi to the dance?" Himespetchi asked suddenly.
Mametchi noted her somber look.
"Yeah, that was the plan."
He tried to think of something that would make her feel better.
"Y'know, there's hypothetically an infinite amount alternative universes out there, and there's probably one where we get together!"
He tried to lighten up mood.
"Well I hope that she's having fun with him."
She let a small smile appear across her face.
"And we can still be friends! I might not be interested in you romantically, but I can still like you platonically." He gave her a sweet smile.
This whole situation left Himespetchi crushed,
But she was surprised that she didn't take it as hard as she thought she would.
She shuffled closer to Mametchi and rested her head on his shoulder.
"I love you, Mametchi. Even if not the way I wanted." She muttered, with her eyes closed.
"I.. love you too."
Mametchi looked up at the sky.
The sun was already setting, they should head home soon. But he wanted to bask in the moment just a little bit longer.
