Work Header

Treat you, Treat me

Summary:

Kakashi stretched as he adjusted the mask on his face and stepped away from the oven where the last of the fresh bread had just been placed to bake. He dusted his hands of flour in the nearby sink before turning the tap on to rinse off any excess. Rolling his shoulders to ease the tired muscles, he glanced at the clock.

6:45 on the dot.

She would be here soon.

Notes:

Look at me: I join a Discord server and suddenly I'm writing again! Here is a cute KakaSaku ficlet I wrote to kind of warm up to writing this ship again (and remind myself how much I missed writing it!)

Thank you so much to MSH for helping out with a beta read! I appreciated you looking it over for me!

I'm always thinking my writing could be better. Let's hope it improves by KakaSaku week lol.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Kakashi stretched as he adjusted the mask on his face and stepped away from the oven where the last of the fresh bread had just been placed to bake. He dusted his hands of flour in the nearby sink before turning the tap on to rinse off any excess. Rolling his shoulders to ease the tired muscles, he glanced at the clock.

6:45 on the dot.

She would be here soon.

He dried his hands on a towel, then grabbed the fresh blueberry and chocolate muffins, the orange scones, and the lemon pound cake slices. They were already pre-packaged by Rin a while ago before she left to go grab the order of coffee beans and fresh tea leaves from their suppliers. It was just him in the cafe now, the rest of the workers not coming in for their morning shift just yet.

He had just set the trays of pre-packaged bakery items down on the front counter when the door tinkled open and a head of pink appeared. It belonged to one of the doctors who worked in the hospital across the street. He didn’t know too much about her or what she did. All he knew was that she was always in super early, came in for some tea in the afternoon, and that she seemed to be busy all the time because her phone was always going off with messages from the hospital.

He also knew she liked her tea— English Breakfast-- with some milk and honey. And that she had a preference for fruit mixed into her treats. He found himself ready with her usual order when she walked in, a habit that had become their usual practice after a while. They’d even started a game where he guessed her pastry order based on her moods.

On mornings when she was tired after a long shift the day before, she always wanted the lemon pound cake with the drizzled frosting. On days she’d had a good night's sleep, she always asked for the orange scones. Most days though, she took the blueberry chocolate muffin. Sometimes, when she’d had a rough morning at work, she would storm in and he’d have an extra cup of tea and a pain au chocolat ready for her in the afternoon too.

Today it seemed like it was an orange scone day. She wore her usual scrubs and had her hair up in a carefully styled bun. He recognized traces of light makeup on her face in the form of eyeshadow and lipgloss. When she approached the counter, she smiled widely, leaning on it with one arm.

“Good Morning, Kakashi. Are you going to guess my order today?”

He smiled behind his mask, eyes crinkling, as he picked up the prepackaged scone still on the tray. The bag was warm to the touch, the heat from the fresh baked scone still warm enough to touch. He placed it on the counter in front of her, then grabbed the tumblr she’d set on the counter. After filing it up, he went to bill her. He paused before he did, finding an unfamiliar business card set on the counter near the cash register.

“It’s mine,” the pink haired doctor stated when she saw where he was looking. When he glanced up at her, she looked away from him for a moment shyly. “I always buy my tea and morning breakfast from you. I thought maybe next time, I could treat you to something for once.”

Kakashi stared at the card, then back at the pink haired doctor with the vivid jade green eyes. He didn’t know much about her except for her morning breakfast preferences but….he wouldn’t mind finding out more.

“Okay,” he replied, pocketing the card. “But as payment, please consider today’s order on the house,” he stated with a wink.
