The Benefit of Friends

Summary:

It's just an arrangement after all.

Work Text:

Faye watched as the sun started to slowly peak over the horizon. She's been up for hours but she's waited until the sunrise crawl out of bed leaving Spike laying there half asleep,. on the mattress a cigarette dangling from his lips.

The hours they spent together over the empty darkness of the evening were some of the best and worst times of her life. Because come morning, he would leave her in her bed and return to his room as if nothing had happened.

Truthfully, she's gotten used to it but that didn't mean she had to like it.

The fact he only came to her in the darkness, night the dead of the night ,was not lost on her; she knew somewhere down the line that he would turn to her and she would eventually have to turn him away .

Her heart was already too far into it for this to continue much longer.

This half life he had them living in the dark. The fact he thought Jet didn't know anything was hilarious. The man had pegged it the first night that Spike had come to her. He'd asked her about it once in the early hours of the morning when he snuck out of her room.

Back then there had been nothing to say, now, now there was so much to say and no one to say it to.

Faye had wanted it to continue during the daylight hours, and that was the one thing he refused her. He had nothing to lose and everything to gain from this arrangement.

She had everything to lose.

That's what made this whole sordid affair crazy. Because when he came with another woman's name on this lips she didn't say anything.

The fact he still didn't realize he was doing it was what drove her insane. At least have the honesty to know that you were thinking about somebody else. There had to be some honor among thieves.

Or at least there had been.

Once upon a time.

That ship had sailed a long time ago.

The fact he didn't seem to care if she finished or not also tended to drive her insane.

He was a one trick pony.

He only cared about himself when it came down to it.

Because in the end all you had was yourself. You are the only person you can rely on when it was all said and done.

She learned that the hard way long time ago.

It had been ingrained in her over and over and over again.if she still found herself falling for men like him; well that was on her.

They all seem to have the same things in common.

The endless hours before the sun rose for the best and worst times in her life. And it was her own damn fault.

She allowed it time and time again.

Faye Valentine was a fool; she could readily admit that now. It is taking her long enough to open her eyes and see that for herself. But she can admit it now.

Progress is progress right?

Footsteps from behind her cause her to turn. Spying him approaching she breathed out a sigh. Reaching into her back pocket she pulled out a cigarette lighting it she inhaled before she turned to speak to him.

"What do you want?" She just wanted a moments peace; was that took much to ask?

"I came to see what you were still doing out here?" his voice was quiet as he approached her from behind wrapping an arm around her waist. Resting his head on her shoulder he inhaled before exhaling a cloud of smoke.

'What's got you so lost in thought?"

"Everything," Spike chuckled as he pressed against her neck.

"It's a little late for an existential crisis, Romani." Faye hummed, leaning back into his arms.

If she knew one thing it was that this wasn't going to end well.

This conversation. Them. This whole speeel.

Bad idea.

"Talk to me, please?" Faye sighed as she relaxed into his hold.

"I'm just tired. I want to go to bed." Usually that was Spike's cue to run. To leave her bed cold and bereft. Tonight it just made him hold her closer.

"Then let's go to bed?" It came out as a statement phrased as a question and Faye sighed before letting him led her back to her room.

One more night wouldn't hurt anything.
